AEM #106 Nick Duffell - Boarding School Survivors & The Importance of Group Work
"Group work is exponentially powerful."
Why is group work so important for boarding school survivors on the path to recovery?
If being seen was dangerous as a child at these Public schools why is it so helpful to be seen in a group setting as we heal?
Today Nick Duffell who is one of the founding voices in the Boarding School Survivors movement talks about group work.
He talks about why we heal in group settings and how the group dynamic works.
He explores the process of surviving at boarding schools and the process of how we learn to thrive again.
A fascinating podcast.

Another wonderfully useful interview, Piers. Thank you. Thanks to Nick for this fascinating info. about group work and it´s power, also, of course the pioneering work that has helped so many to wake up. :) I am writing a kind of impersonal comment, the type I learned to produce as an unseen child among strangers! (this last sentence is exposing me without carapace protection..........it´s a bit frightening...!)

A lot of interesting points made during this interview. Inevitably there will be some that question the phenomenon of Boarding School Survivor's Syndrome. As someone who is in complete agreement with Nick Duffell, and can corroborate everything he says from my own experience, I don't necessarily mind people expressing a contrarian view. It is very important we do not respond to them defensively. It is important to know that the research issues are complicated and much more work needs to be done. But the important thing is that these things are discussed. My own view is that the more the subject is discussed, the more the awareness of the pyschological damage that boarding schools do to individuals will grow, the more will be the people who identify with Nick Duffell's work, and the more will be the numbers of people that will be able to deal with their condition.

Thanks @simonsmatthew, great points. I so agree. When someone disagrees with me I always go back to what analysis has been done and appreciate what they feel. I also find that sharing my own story and that of many of the leaders really helps. Take care, Piers

Really interesting conversation on group work. On another issue I am wondering whether you have seen 7 up series? They started with three?? children that were just about to attend elite British boarding schools. This was primarily to analyse class privilege but it seems that it might also help us understand the impact of these schools on children and adults. Is this something that you could do a short commentary on? Presuming these documentaries are still available and you have the time. It’s probably not that easy to wade through given how many children from all walks of life were involved.

Hi Peter, thanks for your email. I did start to watch the series but I didn't come across the children who went to boarding school. 3 is astonishing! Unfortunately I am struggling to fit everything in with the amount of work I have. Once things have settled I will have a watch. Take care, Piers

I just checked out. Ep 1 of seven up available on KZbin and it would appear I was right. At around 26 minutes you have footage of one of the participants aged 7 in their then boarding school! The other elite male children in the doco list the prep and senior boarding schools they are going to be sent to. 😢
