As a RC modeler, i have installed many hinges for model aircraft use. I would suggest using a long rod between the sets of hinges when expoxing the hinges. this insures a perfect alignment between the two hinge sets.

Great suggestion. Photographers all want black gear, this way it doesn't show up in a window or bounce light onto a close subject. What we don't need but ONLY get, are bags with black interiors. You can't find anything. In my shop screw pouches I could never see what was in there, they weren't even black. I bought some White Krylon spray paint for plastic. Hit the pockets of my screw pouches, but in each one I left one pocket unpainted. The paint soaked right in, the pockets didn't become white. Seemed like a failure. But it's exactly as you say, I can see into those slightly painted pockets when I can't see into the unpainted ones. Put a prominent number or code on each cupboard, bilge pocket, etc. Like P1 for the one closest to the port bow. Then as you load them up take photos with your phone. This will work especially well for food - which you photograph in layers as you fill up the space. Now when you're on board and you're looking for the ketchup instead of going through all the spaces, you just flip through the photos. The location numbers should show up in the photos. But put the number as close to the contents as you can, or on a tab hanging from the top. You don't want half of each photo to be the blank door with the number.

@@WillN2Go1 pro boats use spreadsheets. cause flipping through 2015 pictures looking for your stainless 6mm nylock nuts is re-diculous. I dunno, then again, so is data entry when you live aboard. Yer probably happier overall!

@@bmunday Spreadsheets are ideal because then you can do a search. But ti's also a lot of labor entering all that data. If you have 2000 photos, then you have a huge number of places, flipping through 2000 photos will always be quicker than poking around. I've done these catalogues for my house, my books, my mother in law, our science dept storage rooms a few other things. My process was to make a simple database, so each part of each location had a record, or you could just bring up the records for that single room. I'd take the photos and dragged and dropped them.. Now you could find things without having to physically go and open all the doors and drawers. The next step is not that difficult. You create a series of drop menus with all the classes of items. So Nuts & Bolts might be a general category. Now instead of 2000 photos you only have to look at 30. So Nuts & Bolts might be a general category. Now instead of 2000 photos you only have to look at 20. But I don't think it would take 2000 photos to cover an entire Home Depot. to list the items so you could do a search like with the spreadsheet. Not everything needs an entry. I usually created the lists from looking at the photos. My mother in law wanted to go shopping to buy her favorite white socks and undies. I did a quick word search and told my wife, Boxes 101, 102 and 106 - they're behind the couch downstairs. (Son in law's snarky revenge.) With photos if you go through your places and move things around you just have to take new photos. Easy. If you need the detail, you'll take the time to enter the info. If you don't you don't have to. Keep in mind I've done this several times.

The hinges quite ingenious! If you do need to use actual hinges or need to use screws in the foam core you can use a 1/2" Forstner bit to bore a hole where the screw will go. Then use your home made foam core borer to rabbet the foam out of the edge of the hole a bit. Then your fill the whole shebang with thickened epoxy. You can then predrill and screw whatever you need into the expoxy. Keep it up!

@h.rutten2187
@h.rutten2187 Жыл бұрын
Grey is a great inside cabinet color, maybe since all these places either white or grey are dark maybe it’s an idea to instal some led lights in these cabinets and cubby holes? I imagine just some LED lights in a clear tube snaking on both sides of the boat through the cubby holes and cabinets, one on each side of the boat tucked into top corners so you don’t directly see the light source. And I would look for LED lightning that you can turn to the right spectrum of red light to help with night vision. These tube lights are also great for indirect diffuse lightning. Maybe look into developing a light plan and overal electronics in order to accessible hide wires where possible. But light especially light colors and way of lightning where to put lights can totally change the feel, practicality and experience on a boat, in a house, store etc. I think it’s worth looking into especially if for instance you wanna put in fixed pipes to pull wires through, want a practical sailing as well as cozy home, lights can be a huge game changer in the feel of luxury and practicality.

you could use a strip of aramid (kevlar) glued with epoxy as hinge. It's easy and very strong.
@matthiasvonmutius9264
@matthiasvonmutius9264 Жыл бұрын
Thats exactly what I wanted to hint at. With four prelaminated strips of glass you then laminate on strip of 45/45 Kevlar in the middle. I made hinges like this, the main trick is to prevent the Kevlar in the middle of getting to much resin on. One needs to scrape as much resin out of the gap as possible. The hinges are very light and strong. After curing to about 90 percent (a day) we broke free the middle part, the Kevlar. It's a tricky timing thing, to early and you deform the hinges to late and the cracks get rougher. But when you got it right the hinges are very light, extremely long lasting and can be glued in place. The other option is to 3D print hinges with petg, they can as well be glued in place with epoxy. This is the way to go for me nowadays because the printer does work alone while I can do other stuff... Matthias now back on the trimaran in Greece

For the countertops maybe use Corian. It’s great because it’s so hard wearing and still quite nice to look at. It has a matte stony finish, so it brings a nice texture into a bathroom or kitchen. Corian is a composite material so it won’t degrade, sometimes the surface gets a little scratched but that can be easily fixed by a light wet sanding.
