Practice makes perfect. I’ve changed many valves on the fly, including a 1/2” valve threaded into a 24” pipe with 160 psi behind it. The most challenging ones are the angle oil tank firomatic valve. You need to put enough of a vacuum on the tank to keep the oil from leaking out.

If you have a vacuum, hook it up with a good seal at the top of the tank. Turn it on, and it will tremendously decrease the flow from the hole created during the replacement process

The vacuum will work because it creates negative pressure above the fluid in the tank. I've used this many times to replace valves on the bottoms of tanks without draining the tank and making a mess. The area above the fluid needs to be sealed to create a vacuum, or it won't work

We use to change valves on the bottom of power transformers with 6000+ gallons in them. Pull vacuum on the top of the tank and once it settles down just pull valve and install new one. Faster the better tho.

That’s the proper way to do it! Most time people panicked/frustrated cuz they try to install the new valve to the off position hoping it’ll stop the water while attaching the new piece but unfortunately the water pressure is too strong the resistance is too much to screw the new piece on. so do what she did and leave it to on position, properly attach the new piece on, then shut it off afterwards!

My Water Service is frequently interrupted when there's a tiny leak, somewhere! Decades ago, I worked for a Utility and we only very rarely turned the water: "Off!" We repaired leaks and replaced valves & such, with the system fully pressurized and active!

😂 I've done this on a tank. Once you catch the threads the way she did, it goes on exactly like this. It's not less water pressure, it's more controlled pressure at the end of the valve.
