I use a colour method to mark my anchor chain. Rub Your Body With Oil, Meaning - RED, YELLOW, BLUE, WHITE, ORANGE. Just spray about a foot of paint on the chain at 5 or 10 metres. A spray Can of each colour and top up as needed. No looking for coloured cable ties that can come off.
@christip202 жыл бұрын
Kristina’s way of marking the chain is the logical way of doing it because you don’t have to COUNT each tie.....so you’ll be pulling it up every time you’re distracted to recount it..... They call it “teamwork” for a reason.

One of the things that is so impressive to me is that John does everything the “right” way (or maybe it’s the CLEAN way) that doesn’t leave stains or leftover epoxy to make it look sloppy and dirty like so many people who make their own repairs. They just look like they don’t care enough.....lol!

Probably a bit late now guys but you can just buy the rubber insert for the winch buttons - we have just replaced 4 of them on our Jeanneau 54 DS - they were £9 each…
@chrispomfret85922 жыл бұрын
Hey guys, it might be too late but rather than buy an expensive Bimini which will have you sailing around in a bubble I’d suggest a boom tent. The best ones have battens that you can pass through pockets thwartships to keep the sides up. When you are not using it as sun protection you can use it to keep your deck sun protected when you leave it at a marina. The beauty is you roll it up and put it down below when not in use. That’s good because you won’t drag it around in the wind which is much safer plus faster, you still feel the wind when you sail (which is why you got a boat) and you can still see the sails. Make sure you get the best quality Sunbrella so you get life out of it. Or… make one out of lightweight material so it just keeps the sun off you. Ps: Go to the sailmaker and get coloured strips of spinnaker cloth for your anchor marks. A 300mm/400mm x 25mm strip will allow you to tie one end to the chain and the other to remain relatively mud free. That’s opposed to a thin cable tie that are hard to see.

Love your videos! One thing I noticed, which you might want to consider money and time permitting is putting a schackle in between the anchor and the swivel (curved end in the anchor). If you swing on the anchor whilst its dug in this would enable the swivel to roatate and take loads along its axis where it's strongest rather than in sheer (sideways) where it can be quite weak, or so I've been told :-)! Of course it's your boat though! Thank you for such a nice video, sorry you had such a busy and expensive week! (and sorry for adding anohter potential expense!) Great work with all the filming, sound and editing - it's really appreciated!

Very professional video. Glad you're experiencing all that sailing has to offer - no money, limited water, expensive marinas, marine tradespeople who can't find the problem, etc. BUT, there is tennis .. go Rafa ! Rafa's yacht is on youtube too. It's tied up in Monaco.
@lemal04322 жыл бұрын
Your video's are always well put together, you have obvious skills in this area (The comments section amply support this observation). Caution, you're good, but, I hope it does not consume you aiming for perfection. For the vast majority of us watching, you - you, following your instincts - is more than enough. You're a natural, hope you can accept that. 🙏

Good on John for hunting down that leak. Flurocarbon refrigerant is terribly bad environmentally. Typically can be ozone depleting and / or a synthetic greenhouse gas. Typically they have a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of about 2000 (CO2 has a GWP of 1) the amount of gas in a split system would be roughly equivalent to the pollutant value of running a car for 6 months. It is illegal to regas a system without fixing the leak.
@robertorzech89222 жыл бұрын
That leak could have been permanently sealed with a refrigerator line piercing valve for 5 dollars ! End of problem ! Every fridge tech (like me) always carry a half a dozen of them ! No tools required and available everywhere ! Cheers

It looks like your anchor swivel is directly connected to the anchor, my understanding is you need either a shackle or a few links of chain in between to avoid it breaking if it gets side loaded if the wind changes and your anchor is stuck under a rock or reef...... look it up online for more info.....I set mine up with an extra shackle to avoid this problem.... others are against them all together.... an online search will give all the info you need, there is plenty of stuff to be found :-)

Having been a refrigeration tech for 25 years .. that's pretty common for a "technician" to "not find" a leak, hoping to just sell you a new system. With proper equipment one can find very small leaks. ... My daughter has a self contained heat pump system in her house and I found leak that took a year to leak out so the system wasn't working correctly. That's a small leak.
@KristinasTravels2 жыл бұрын
Glad you were able to help your daughter out with her leak, that’s fantastic. Our leak was taking about 2 weeks to leak out the gas before the freezer would stop working, so it was a good day when we found this leak

@bonobonorman96582 жыл бұрын
No no no... Cable-ties are sh.t and break very quickly on a working chain. Use soft pleated cord (or fishing line) and tie it simply double over itself. Then blast the knot quickly with a torch. Paint can work, if thick from a tin. Avoid spray-paint because it is also sk.t.
@tonyshaw73892 жыл бұрын
Not 164 feet you’re given 14 feet too much to a metre or 3 m or if you put it 50 m still 3 feet yard stick and a metre stick or fill both 36 inches long which is 3 feet
