The role of the MDI box is largely a supervisory one in the sense that it reads all the engine sensors and outputs the information over CANbus for the Volvo EVC gauge/display system, but it does have a minor control function: it switches the engine glow plugs, the starter motor solenoid, the fuel stop solenoid and it energises the alternator about one second after the engine has started. A failure of the MDI box leaves the engine dead, but it can be bypassed very easily to preheat and start using a simple jumper cable or even a screwdriver, with caution. The key issue is the lack of monitoring over coolant temperature and oil pressure afterwards. ) . The worst thing I see about that box is its actually MOUNTED TO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM ! One should consider remodeling it from that spot and punting it in a vibration free heat free area ! I've seen things done like this by Cummings and other manufacturers, electrical devices mounted to engines in various places AND THEY FAIL ! Why mount them to a heated and high vibration area ! GEESH ! It would be like mounting an airplane GPS to the cowling fan of a Jet engine ! What ?

Warren is a real craftsman. I’m more of a “let’s get it to stage 3 and move on to the next project” kind of guy. Kudos to you. And Erica just gets better and better at the editing (to say nothing of her Russian Vana White impression). It did not go unnoticed at the end, when speaking of the boat for sale, that “she has a nice clean bottom”. Tell me that wasn’t intentional. I DARE you!😅 Can’t wait for Wednesdays. I just read “Love with a Chance of Drowning” about a couple who sale to French Polynesia. The whole time all I could think was how irresponsible and lazy that boat captain was. I found myself constantly mumbling throughout the book, “ugh…Warren would never stand for this!” This episode confirms all of those feelings. The way you take care of VA is truly inspiring. I love seeing these boat work episodes and - despite previous comments - its a nice mix up when Warren narrates.

The night time dive footage and whale footage are mindblowing! The new electronic engine statusing is like nothing I've ever seen! Do you think you have fewer, less expensive failure points now. I would LOVE to have that on my boat when we cruise in a few years. Excellent stuff! Cheers!

I wonder if this is the same pod we saw in September, about 10 miles north of Papeete just offshore. We were watching from shore by the Arahoho Blowhole park . The baby was constantly spanking it's tail on the surface to make splashes and the mother eventually came over and started doing it too, like she was humoring the kid.
