We have made the transition from full-time software professionals from the SF Bay Area to liveaboard sailing explorers who always keep one eye on the weather and our hearts in a song. Our goal is to complete a circumnavigation and we recently transitioned to a performance catamaran and are madly in love with our Outremer 52.
We are working with Outremer in France (with the help of Google Translate) to launch our boat project and start our journey as sailing vagabonds. While it’s not a race or speed test, we are doing our first Bluewater crossing this year and we are excited to see AWEN stretch her legs and dance on the water.
Join us as we share what we’re learning living without Amazon, (but with Starlink), and attempt this new life of travel and adventure on the ocean. Please be patient with us as we continue to improve our KZbin vlogging skills. Our goal isn’t to make our life a movie, it’s to give back to what others have shared with us.

✅ About Sailing AWEN.
Holly and Stephane are formerly from the San Francisco Bay Area but have a home in Tahoe. Our 'someday' plan was to sell our belongings, buy a boat, and, with reckless abandon, sail away to visit distant lands, which we did starting in 2020.
You can follow our transition and journey in our candid podcast, Covert Castaway, wherever you listen. You can also follow every stop we’ve made with pictures and blogs and stream our podcast directly on our website.

Oh I love you both being so tan! Oh my goodness - that clear blue water and sugar sand is dreamy. Being t-boned previously made you very alert to the hazards of other sailors, which is a good thing. So good to see another video from AWEN this Sunday morning. I voted for the electric but having a motor that Holly can start by herself is critical. Cheers, guys! Your videos make me so happy to watch. Thank you for sharing these :)

You definitely made the right decision on the two-stroke outboard, simple and virtually indestructible. I moved to a 20 horse 4-stroke with electric start but I've still got my 15 2-stroke as a backup.

I had many fuses that were underrated for the items onboard ! Easy solve though 👍

2stroke is so much lighter, simpler. More reliable , easier to fix , way less electronics etc etc etc

We have Yamaha enduro two stroke 40 electric and it’s great except for it’s noisy. From a reliability perspective Yamaha is the way to go. Our next one will ll be Yamaha 4 stroke, definitely not electric. Weight is also a huge thing. Honda and tohatsu are great machines also except for parts availability in more remote areas. The new mercury are fantastic as long as they are new.. “met kuren” In Dutch means “with trouble” although parts are widely available. Just my five cents Zatara has been using Honda but ditching it now.

I recently bought a Tohatsu 2 stroke 18 hp. There was no 20hp. The choice was 15hp, 18hp or 25hp.

I hope some people went to help him??? That will prevent damage to the whole anchorage, and just the neighborly thing to do in any situation.

Two stroke much better in many ways ! For those about environmental issue , just wish that Taylor Swift travel less with is private jet! 😊

Disadvantages of two stroke engines 2-stroke engines do not last as long as four stroke engines; there is no lubrication system in a 2-stroke engine so parts wear out a lot faster. 2-stroke oil is expensive 2-stroke engines use more fuel. 2-stroke engines are far more less environment friendly 2-stroke engines are smelly 2-stroke engines are noisy

Good luck wearing out a Yamaha 15hp 2 stroke! Our first one was 21 years old and still running great when we replaced it with a new Enduro version. A 2 stroke can be fixed anywhere in the world and that's worth more than the perceived downsides.

Not sure your outboard problem needed fixing yet and might have waited til sxm and bought manual/electric start version but understand that defies old school conventional wisdom, however convenience would be material benefit in your situation? Time will tell I guess.

Plus most electrics can still pull start these days. Vaguely remember Yami 2 stroke 9hp could boost to 15hp as it was the same engine?

Ya, this wasn’t a problem. It was trying to think ahead realizing we didn’t have enough umph for strong current or more than two people. We realized this in the Bahamas but thinking ahead to later. The 2 stroke you can get here very easily.

I would not get an electric as your ONLY propulsion. A 4-stroke will always get better fuel efficiency. Maybe upwards of 2x efficiency by volume. 2-strokes are lighter for a give HP rating and less internal mechanicals. It is true, 2-stoke is easier on maintenance but efi 4-strokes are really getting VERY good nowadays. They all have their place. I would personally chose a 9.9hp or 15hp EFI 4-stroke. The 2-stroke will do better being stored as a spare compared to a 4-stroke... generally. After purchasing the 2-stroke I would use the 4-stroke as your primary and have the 2-stroke as a backup.

Thanks, we got 15hp 2 stroke, we don't really want to carry two engines...we are trying to keep weight off the boat, lol.

@@SailingAWEN as far as spares, get a recoil, a sparkplug, and maybe a carb rebuild kit.
