The main halyard was wrapped backwards on the winch but it didn’t matter you had the mainsail reefed and it wasn’t going any higher 😊. Take your time before sailing off the hook. Look around check everything. Maybe make a check list until you have it down. If the anchor is stuck pull it as tight as you as you can then tie to a cleat and wait a minute. Boat action will break it free. Don’t pull it up immediately wait for the stern to swing around until you can actually get some wind in the sail and drive forward. If you pull it up without wind in your sail it will drive you backwards until you get in a position to sail. There could be a lee shore, coral, another boat, or shallow water. All bad. 😊 when you pull that anchor up you want to be driving past it in a direction you want to go even if nothing else is around. Have all the fun you can but both of you need to be on the same page. You were having trouble getting the anchor up and she was having issues getting her sail up. I would suggest starting the engine and let it warm up and charge the batteries and run the cold plate. That way you have a fall back plan. It might not start when everyone is in a panic. Have fun and be careful 😊

You guys are showing some spirit! I sense some novice energy from both of you but THIS is how sailing is learned. Pro tip: running off the wind like that, let your main boom all the way out until it nearly touches the shrouds. Long-term, it's best if the sail isn't rubbing the shrouds or spreaders either. This also helps to prevent accidental jibes. A sail is like a wing & works best if the wind is blowing across it from leading edge to trailing edge...which generally makes straight downwind the least efficient & slowest point of sail in all rigs...except in storms...
@angelikaopland788015 күн бұрын
Ah! Andre lets out almost enough main sheet around 13:40. The best you can do for sail trim running straight downwind is lay the sail flat across the wind, & most fore-&-aft rigs won't quite let you do that before the shrouds get in the way. This is why square rig has always been & still is superior to schooner rig in the trades. Even a big square-rigged ship is not at it's best running straight downwind, but is a lot easier to jibe or "wear". A full-rigged ship effectively loses over 2/3 of it's sail area by wind shadowing the rest while running straight downwind, & begins losing even more of the wind's power as soon as it starts moving (as does ANY sailing vessel on this point of the wind). KZbinr "Sailing with Thomas" describes zig-zagging downwind to maximize progress & enjoyment; a method I've been using on our lake sails for decades. -Angelika's Husband

Hi guys. Just a friendly suggestion. When you get a fish on your line, slow the boat down to about 2 knots ASAP and you will not lose so many. The speed you are going through the water will strip-off almost all your catches. Hope this helps, and continue your awesome sailing adventure. I've been following since episode #1! Cheers.
@sparkeyjones6261 Жыл бұрын
Not a practical suggestion for those under sail, you're not going to suddenly slow to 2 knots. Heavier fishing gear will do it.
@acampbell1985 ай бұрын
@@sparkeyjones6261 Actually sailors do it all the time by reefing and/or taking in sail. Takes skillful boat handling but can and is done every day.
@sparkeyjones62615 ай бұрын
@@acampbell198 I’ve never seen or heard from any other sailor that they would take the time to reef sails in order to land a fish. It’s just not practical, and wouldn’t slow the boat to 2 knots in a decent amount of wind. I suppose one could heave-to, which would do it effectively, but it takes some effort, and slows one’s progress on a passage. Most people use very heavy line and tackle, and just haul the fish in. Unless you’ve got a 100kg+ tuna on the end, it just takes some muscle 💪
@angelikaopland788015 күн бұрын
Fast ocean predators like tuna & mahi-mahi won't even strike until you're doing about 10 knots. We caught them with hand lines & barbless hooks but they're so fast that they may still swim alongside during the fight. Slowing down on a trade wind run on the open Pacific with a 40-ton square topsail schooner & all set just isn't in the cards; just haul 'em in! With fore-&-aft rig, slowing down can be accomplished by simply rounding up into the wind & spilling some of it if there are no obstructions in that direction, & the waves aren't too dangerous.

I love the uncut sailing. Great video. One time, when I was impatiently trying to fall off the wind to sail off of a can, an older sailor pointed out that you can just push the boom out in the direction you want the bow to go. The boat will weathercock to match the boom and then you can just trim the main to sail. That way, you don't need the genoa flapping around while you are trying to work on the foredeck.

Well done sailing off your hook, not very many cruisers practice this valuable skill. When I was cruising, my favorite sport was to see if i could sail off the hook (even in crowded anchorages) and sail back on at my destination. Caution obviously the conditions need to be perfect to get out of a crowded anchorage in order to avoid bumper boat!

Looking pretty good. Keep an eye on those rod holders bolts. If things loosen and a big fish hits you can say goodbye to those nice reels. In kayaking there is a saying, "leash it or loose it." because it's not a matter of IF the equipment fails but rather WHEN the equipment fails. a length of paracord with a carbineer clip at the end hooked on the reel will give you some insurance against a mishap. The carbineer can quickly be unclipped from the reel when you are ready to bring a fish in. Good luck.

You may have already found this in another comment; Expedition Evans, episode 75, tells the full story but they had a fire on board while at anchor in the Miami area and Andre was burned pretty badly. I believe their alcohol stove was the culprit. Honestly it sounds like they were pretty lucky they were within reach of medical care. Had it happened in the more remote areas of the Bahamas, things might not have gone as well as they did. My parent's boat had an alcohol stove like that back in the 70's; I recall that my dad specifically bought that stove because he felt propane was dangerous on a boat...being heavier than air apparently there were many cases of propane leaks collecting in the bilge and going boom w/ a spark or heat from an engine. My mother hated that stove and she eventually made my dad take it off the boat and we just used a grill to cook. Seeing this story, I'm really glad my mom did that. Beyond that, I don’t know what happened to them, haven’t seen any posts or news. The Evens and or Spear it Animal might know (Sprit it Animal use to hang with them as well and they were there when the accident happened) but I haven’t seen either channel post of follow up. Hopefully they are doing ok and just saving up to continue their adventure.

( not wd-40 it'll gum up and make it worse ). I couldn't see what model it was or I'd give you the maintenance tutorial for that specific model. good luck guys
