We went for a beautiful sunset cruise before the lockdown, when our engine surprises us with bright fireworks! We had to do an emergency stop, which turned out to be the wrong place to be the next day. We also lose our dingy and almost lose the boat in the wind… Watch till the end!

A glowing fire with short flames in a dimly lit boat, with stars shining brightly in the darkened night sky, what more could anyone want ? Nothing, but you could always have that beautiful song that begins "Hey Darling" playing softly in the background.

Looking at the sparks from the exhaust! I would not worry too much and here is my explanation, all Diesel engines make soot that collects in the exhaust pipe, if you run your engine a lot say on tick over or at low revs that soot will build up in the exhaust. When running the engine at high revs then heat will build up in the exhaust and burn off the soot (this is actually a good thing) you did say that you were going a lot faster than normal so this would account for that! In the video the next day the engine sounded fine and if you had Brocken anything internally the engine would be making very bad noises indeed. You did the right thing in checking the water level in the coolant and I would also be checking the oil level too! Happy boating guys x

It's just soot build-up. Diesel engines are quite sooty and carbon build up in the exhaust. If you run the engine hard the exhaust will get hot and burn the soot off. This is a good thing and nothing to worry about. Totally normal.

We only just found your channel and are enjoying it very much! We live in the U.S. and this lifestyle is becoming something we are longing to try for at least a month and possibly retire on a narrowboat. We originally planned to tour the U.S. and may still, but this is something we absolutely want to do. There is so much beauty and history there! You are so lucky to have this life at your fingertips! Love your boat too! Tim and Tammie Miller

As many have said its perfectly ok to see carbon burning off in poor light: you often see it in tunnels. My engine is pretty new and the manual says to run the engine at high speed every 100 hours if possible to burn it off and decarbonise. In practice you can only do that on rivers so it builds up to a point where it burns off at slower speeds.

It's most likely just soot burning off the exhaust. If the engine is otherwise just running fine, and without smoke or smell, I would not worry too much. White smoke is a sign of the engine overheating so keep an eye open for that.

Hi guys , how do manage having your little dinghy in tow in locks and keeping it safe and secure when moored ? I would certainly like a little dinghy , if I had a canal boat as gives you that flexibility in exploring the canals without moving the boat !!
@CruisingAlba

it's not a problem, at first we didn't share locks with other boaters but now we now we can even fit in a lock next to a 72-foot boat, in London that is. There is always enough room. When we are stationary we lock it with a chain and padlock

Hayes is a pretty rough part of London. I'm not sure if it's especially a violent part of town, more it's just very depressed. I've moored up around there but not for long. There's nothing worth spending any amount of time in Hayes, it's just a dump. Sorry to those from Hayes, but Hayes needs to up its game considerably, it's awful.

I like everything about your video and your story. I do not like having to hold my phone to my ear to be able to hear part of what you say. You seem a lovely couple, but perhaps you need a microphone or something for the young lady. Her voice is just too soft. I'll remain a subscriber for now, and hope for some improvement in the audio.

No wonder you are having all these problems with the boat. You have upset the flag Etiquette gremlins. The Union flag without a white border is a land flag and as such should not be flown aboard a vessel. This has bought bad luck on your boat. The Cross of St George is a RN Admirals flag and only boats with special dispensation can fly it. The Association of Dunkirk Little Ships are one, their house flag is The Cross of St George defaced with the Coat Of Arms of Dunkirk. It's a legal requirement that sea going boats should fly the Red Ensign. Other nations flags should only be flown when entering their water as an act of courtesy and showing that you respect the laws of that nation. So stick your flags in the drawer, the gremlins will go away, the sparks will stop and you won't leave your dingy behind any more. Safe boating. PS: Umbrella's are bad luck also.
