Adventures of Two Afloat

Adventures of Two Afloat

Күн бұрын

A tour of cabin of our 1988 Ericson 38-200 sailboat "Naoma." There is more information and links below if you click "Show More."
So far we sailed with her from San Diego to Mexico across the Pacific Ocean to French Polynesia (Tahiti and the Society Islands, Marquesas Islands, and the Tuamotu Atolls).
By the way, we forgot to mention the reason the fan was smoking (see our last episode). We promise to include it in the next video! Many of you were close with your guesses but so far only one person was 100% right... Keep guessing! - Ryan

I loved the detailed account of the electronics. I loved the redundancy and communication fallbacks. I too tend to over engineer, but when you are offshore, you need to be self-sufficient. You are absolutely right about the bond with your boat, especially if you do your own work. Also, if I did the work, I have much more confidence in the boat under me. Thanks for sharing.

Ich liebe Eure lustigen Videos!!! Wie immer: echt sehenswert und informativ, dabei auch noch lustig und einfach cool! Ihr habt ein tolles Boot! Great video! I really liked seeing all the things you added (gave me lots of ideas for our Ericson 38). I would love to see a video of the deck and how you secure your dinghy. Thank you!!
@TwoAfloat
@TwoAfloat 7 жыл бұрын
Usually tight underwear does the trick but generally I just let my dinghy hang. Why do you ask? :) We have an approximately 10' achilles with wood floor. On passages more than one day or so we stow it packed away lashed to some spectra loops we installed below the cabinet on the starboard side of the v-berth. Otherwise we stow it on deck, upside down, bow forward, with the hatch-guard just inside the dinghies transom (stainless rail thing Ericson has over the small hatch on deck). We lash the aft part with line using the forward chainplates as hard points and the forward part using the braces on the adjacent stanchion bases. Does that help? Important to deflate partly on hot days... Have you seen our posts in the Ericson forum? Lots of pics of stuff we did on deck you might like but I think we'll do a deck video eventually. Thanks for the comment!
@meldwnb
@meldwnb 7 жыл бұрын
That definitely gives us some ides! Thank you. One last question for you. We're installing our new electronics (B&G) and we're trying to figure out the best way to install our chart plotter without spending $600 for some of the pre-manufactured holders. We've watched your videos, looking for the way you installed yours and it appears that it's just open to the elements. Is that working out for you? We're thinking of modifying a side bracket and attaching it that way and making some sort of clear covering for rainy weather.
@TwoAfloat
@TwoAfloat 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Melissa, Nicole here. I'm not the expert on electronics but we just put conduit to protect the cables and it has been working great so far. I also made a sunbrella cover for the display device itself which is protecting it when not in use. I hope that helps! :) Nicole
@meldwnb
@meldwnb 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nicole! That's kind of what we were thinking...good to know it's working for you! Thank you!
@TwoAfloat
@TwoAfloat 7 жыл бұрын
Ryan here... We used a Ram Mount www.rammount.com/ for the display then ran cables as Nicole described. It works extremely well for our Zeus2 as it's designed for outdoor use but I can't vouch for the waterproof-ness etc of other brands. The benefits of this mount include cost and especially adjustability. When we have friends onboard at anchor it easy swivels out of the way. Note that the black paint on the mount tends to flake off over time. We just spray with corrosion guard and so far (3 years in the tropics) no problems. We also replaced the stock fasteners with stainless. Hope this helps! R

Hi Bill. Oh we loved the engine access on Naoma! You had to take the ladder off and then the large cover which gave you access from the front and a great portion of the engine. There was a smaller side panel you could take in the aft cabin and there was another top panel that you could take off and have great access to the back of the engine. :) N

@TwoAfloat
@TwoAfloat 7 жыл бұрын
Hi S/V Della Jean - Yeah sorry, I forgot to mention it in this video but we will in the next. Some people were close with their guesses but so far only one person more or less nailed it... The "world wide radio" is an ICOM M802 SSB (HF radio) with Pactor 4 modem. I mainly use Sailmail but have Winlink and Sat addresses as back up. The mast track cover thing came with the boat and is OEM for the spar. It's basically a piece of aluminum that slides in the track. It's a Kenyon mast and I think you can get the parts at rigrite.com Thanks for the comment! R

What type of watermaker do you use?
@TwoAfloat
@TwoAfloat 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Ted - We have a Spectra Ventura Tropical. It has proven reliable so far, we can often run it off solar (it is efficient), and it does not take up much space, but it typically only makes around 8 gph...

do you find the Erikson 38 to be blue water capable , i thought it was considered more of a coastal cruiser
@TwoAfloat
@TwoAfloat 6 жыл бұрын
She is a coastal cruiser with blue water capabilities for sure. We did rebuild the foredeck and made her beefier including beefier cleats. What's incredible is her solid hull which sold us oh and the fact that she's super fast in light winds. :) Cheers! Nicole

Hi Don - We have both but primarily use Sailmail as it generally has a much more reliable connection out here. There is a great radio net you may like at 0300 UTC on 14300 (20 meter). They take position reports and talk with boats like ours underway across the Pacific. More info at www.pacseanet.com/ 73s! K2FLT
