For your modem issue. I have had the "no vga connection on the laptop' issue as well on my work lap top. Since i run multiple monitors for work i had to find a solution. And Solution i found. There are many adapters out there. I have a vga to hdmi for one monitor and a usb to vga for my second monitor. So it might pay to look on line at your localish big box store and see what they might have available for you to work with and then you can cut out the need for finding outdated drivers. Very good looking Ship and love the name.

You should be able to decode and send PACTOR using the SSB with just a mic on the laptop and using the speakers for output with the mic keyed and help near the speaker. Not ideal, but will work. Get fldigi (free) and at least for the WEFAX downloads you can run the software on the laptop and have it's mic just listen to the output from the radio. If you want to get fancy get a rigexpert. If you want to go cheap and are handy get an easy digi kit off ebay. 718 doesn't have a USB connection, so a bit trickier to connect to a PC. You don't really need the pactor modem anymore as sending/receiving is all done via the PC and software programs now.
@bradlarden
@bradlarden 6 жыл бұрын
Great tour, many thanks. On the Icom, it's probably the serial port that you're missing. A simple to get USB to serial convertor (modern) should do the trick. It converts one of your laptop USB ports to a serial port (basically) which you can then plug into the appropriate port on the modem or Icom 718.
@SailingMillennialFalcon
@SailingMillennialFalcon 6 жыл бұрын
You are correct that seems to have done the trick. sail mail now detects the ports at least. However i have a new gremlin since the time of recording. The pactor no longer springs to life with a light show when i boot it up. Now just a flash and back to blank.. i hope I've not cooked it 🤔🤔
@bradlarden
@bradlarden 6 жыл бұрын
That's a bummer. I've never used Pactor stuff, so can't help unfortunately. :-(
@jhlewis10
@jhlewis10 6 жыл бұрын
Your Icom 718 is a decent little radio, with winmore and RMS Express you can email, just find a few gateways you can connect to easily and save them as favorites. Regarding your driver issues, many serial to USB connectors use cheap Chinese copies of prolific chipsets and newer drivers will not work. Get an ftdi chipset or just roll yours back to driver 3.2.0.0. Hopefully that's all your problem is. That SCS will connect more reliably than a soundcard modem.

She seems a lot more useful than Elayna too, and possibly not a piss-moaning vegan (does it ever seem to you like La Vagabond kills a lot of fish for vegans?) Did you see when she slept on deck the first time they anchored? She's a bit ginger, but overall that's one hell of a wookie.

Just found & subbed to your channel-very nice! Question: do you remove the paper labels and cardboard from your foodstuffs? I’ve seen other cruisers do this (& label cans and ziplocks with a Sharpie marker) to reduce the chance of bugs/cockroaches on board! Sorry if I missed that but the boat looks so clean, I’d hate to see you two dealing with unwanted pests.

Serial not VGA (which is used for monitors). The term is packet radio (radio email, and not much else but maybe weather). You'd need packet radio modem software which can be used on mac but requires a lot of know how (software, radio, software, linux, etc) as you'd need to set up the software and likely on a linux or windows vm and pass it to your serial/usb port to your ham radio. If you think the ham radio community is small (which they are since most places requires you to earn a license to transmit on any freqs including packet radio (Be sure to check local laws, but as a boat sailing around the world most won't care unless you abuse it). Since you found ios packet radio modem software just use that or buy a cheap windows laptop if you cared about what platform you use it on (be sure to check for software first as often even linux/windows software might be old and may not work with newer OSs- check the software provider for details as like I said no one really uses it so almost no one makes software either out of their free time nor for sale since no one really uses it). However, it is 1 method out of 2 for weather/limited internet acesss (which isn't real internet of course due to the limitations) the other being boat internet satellite which is like $150/month + equipment which is too slow for anything like radio packet but getting weather info. However, in 10-15 years we will see better sat internet for boats hopefully if Elon Musk and other do good with Starlink or similar systems. There is a semi-3rd option of connecting to USA NOAA weather sat (you'd need a small dish like house-tv-satellite (like DishTV/etc) (anyone is allowed to download/downlink from it) but they provide a basic real-time global weather image which models are based on by experts so its not useful to most people unless you study it some and excludes earth weather station info so even less helpful (but is a free resource to everybody the US provides like GPS (even know most countries like Russia, China, or Europe make their own) even knowing the US covers the globe.

Nice boat. You might think about getting your Ham radio license. Also look to the ham radio community to get your pastor modem working. Also look into "Winlink.org", its software based and you don't need a modem.
