Installing the engine stand is probably the most important part of the rebuild. Not getting this right means you motor might not sit level or you won't be able to get your stern drive lined up in the rear. If you are having these issues after installing in your motor, let me know. Anyways, good times!

Stainless steel still contains iron (ferrum). It has a high level of chrome and other additives to keep it from eaaily rusting but it will still rust under the right circumstances. But i agree with you. Nobody should ever use any other type of hardware in a marine application.

I actually started making a video about this and I have about a month’s worth of data. To give you a sneak peak, I now store all my #305 stainless screws IN WATER. I have some in a factory plastic box in a lake near my house for comparison. Wait until you see my real world results.

Hey Michael, The set up in your project is almost identical to mine as well as the scope of work. I will be completely gutting mine out as you did. My biggest concern has been the engine bay area / mounts. I am totally stressing about this. I have not done the demo yet. I built the bracket that you did a number of episodes ago that mounts to the outside of the transom and extends into the boat with the cross boards landing on the mounts and drilled the holes in exact locations. But where I am confused unless I miss understood is that in this episode you put the old mounts back in up against your that Beautiful new Kevlar Transom and measured again. I am guessing your transom is of Exact thickness as the old one? Also should there be a concern of 1/8 or 1/16 inch gaps from just placing the old up against the new?

Great questions. Every transom I’ve rebuilt on an OMC/Volvo Penta was on the thick side. I ended up having to trace out the transom plate and sand into the transom because I made the transom too thick-almost 1/4 inch one time. I ended up coating the wood with resin to reseal it. This is acceptable because it is above the inside part of the boat. The transom can be mount plate bolts allow for about 3/4 of inch so remember that as you are adding layers of Kevlar/fiberglass (it all adds up). The other issue I ran into once is the width of the front motor mounts. The second rebuild I did the mount was almost not wide enough-that causes a massive issue. I even brought the motor back in one time to make sure the width was correct-not a realistic idea per se. 1/16 or 1/8 is no big deal. 3/4 to an inch will be an issue.

Hey Michael I'm rebuilding a boat right now It's and 83 sport craft fisherman 210 do I need to put down peanut butter in between the Stringer wood and the Hull or can I put the stringer straight on the Hull and peanut butter the edges? Ty in advance

The order is this: marine plywood gets cut and leveled, then clean the attaching area with acetone, and dewaxer, then check for gaps larger than 1/8 inch. If you can see large gaps, fill them with peanut butter compound, then cover with 1708 or kevlar.

You may find the peanut butter compound flows beneath the stringer naturally, creating a glued surface.
