What is there to think about. Pull the panel off and remove the foam. When welding the heat will spread. Remove the foam. That removes any risk.

The more you say the more I think it's time to draw a line under this boat project. Regardless of whether or not you pay a fortune to get welding done you're living in a potential fatal fire with the insulation so dangerous. I've made huge mistakes financially in my life & sometimes it's better to walk away. Very sorry for you both but you're young & can start again, plenty of time. No insurance would pay out for fire caused by using unsafe materials.

Temperature from the flame of a lighter: 600 C Average temp of a welder: 1400 C I am a welder. There is no way I'd be doing any welding with that amount of fire risk. Even with a fire spotter in and outside of the boat standing guard. I dont understand why you guys didnt fully fix the hull from the get go, before ever even starting on the inside. It sounds like you guys were using a bunch of bandaid solutions everywhere, but not actually fixing or doing the work the correct way. Then hoped by making it look "pretty" it will all just magically work & be okay? Make it make sense. Unless you guys were just trying to offload this cobbled together bandaided boat & then sell this lemon onto an unsuspecting person? Prob never telling the next owners bout the flammable insulation in the bathroom.. Lets also remember if some ever were to happen, the insurance wouldnt even need to pay, cause you guys have videos of you trying out how fireproof that insulation is & then knowingly still installed it! Not just that, but you even have recorded videos of it & put those online. Well the Internet is forever, even if you delete it. I dont know if you only have family members on here applauding your ever misstep & bad idea. Or you willfully ignore every comment like mine, only to cry wolf later. Its the first & last video Ive watched. So much lustful temptation of fate is even for my general dare devil life style a bit much. I usually have a great amount of empathy & sympathy, but here its just gone. I guess good luck on setting a higher importance on those Bathroom tiles, rather than potentially your own life. But never mind that, cause my guess is this boat will be sold within 6 months of my comment.

This is what I would do let the welder continue but have a hose spraying water on the part that is glowing in side of the boat and put a nozzle on the hose to reach in the cavity it will put out the flames quickly it will make a mess but it will be better cleaning the water up with a vacuum cleaner as it runs out over the floor than smashing all of your hard work taking the tiles off and after he is finished you still have your bathroom and a little bit of tiling to do and remember to wear a mask because the fumes will be poising. Cheers Doug from Australia.
@bindatek88019 ай бұрын
There is ONLY ONE CHOICE clear everything out from behind the welding area. If you leave it there will be a fire, also if you tempt the welder to try, he will use lower power no doubt, that could mean your plate will either leak or drop off - Be brave, be ruthless and rip the bathroom out, and anything else flammable.

Unfortunately any foam is flammable. Burnable , and stinks . Rock wool is used in house building for lofts, a lot of insurers will not insure it ! I would clear bathroom and totally move out any foam stuff I really do Wish You Well.

When we had the spud blight in britain we had to import potatoes from all over the world chips went up from 50p to £1 a portion. when blight was over chips never went down in price. same with steel, price gone down, retail stays high.

What Chloe said about how much you'd learned by buying an old boat was pretty 'on the money'. You had a warning from your welder about the possibility of fire. As someone who's had some dealings with 'spooky' and 'woo-woo', I saw that flaming car as - at least - an underline to that. The worst that will happen if you have to trash the bathroom to replace the foam is more time and money spent. The worst that can happen if you don't is fire and - maybe - the end of the road. Do you have all the information you need, to make an informed decision? Is it worth saying "Oh, screw it!" and tossing a coin? Good luck - or does one make one's own? - whatever you decide.

If it's water and air tight there's nothing to feed the flame. You could also wet it down inside if it does take. Pink foam is retardant. MiG welding he can do in stages to let the heat dissipate. Monitor from the inside and wet it down How hard is the window to remove. It's one of those things. Steel prices aren't likely to improve.

Dear Chloe and Ryan Chloe remember on your birthday you got food poisoning and how sick you felt? That is how Ratae is feeling. She needs a big hug from both of you. If you leave some of the insulation in place have a fire extinguisher at hand as they weld over that area. If you happen to see smoke then call to the welder to stop and allow the area to cool down. Have you spoken to the welder to see if he would take a deposit for material and then make monthly payments after that for the balance. Also have him check around to see if any other places might have a stock pile of steel at a lessor price. Is there family that can help out financially? Do not give up hope as you will get through this. You are both young and have many years ahead of you. Be strong for Ratae as she now needs you. Mark Alberta, Canada

we live on a dutch barge , 100 year old, and when there is welding (and trust me, there is a lot of it) we are stand bye inside with a water hose, cooling it down if necessary, and a smoke extractor from the boatyard. You have to be there yourself, don't trust the boatyard.....it is your own responsibility... and yes, it is expensive , maybe you can do it on the most thin plates, (double it? ) but think about it like a old house, ( a new foundation) it give you peace of mind, you don't want a leakage , (i have been there ....stress!! ) when you have to do new insulation, think about sheep's wool or cork, very good insulation ,and fireproof) What @markrant 1460 says; stay on it, it's worth it, there is nothing better than living on a boat. succes xxx👍

Hi,is there any way of getting a hull wrapped by plastic. Think some boats can. I wouldn't think of scrapping it, just get it blacked with lots of coats of proper paint. I think wing it along. Welding can't be that hard to learn. My pal paid 10 k for a near complete hull,just off the grand union 48 foot barge But he lost out on the sale value overall. Was 20k from ebay for boat He sold after the 10k spend on hull plates also paint and surveys. For about 25k. Lost about 5k on the deal.... Ive got a boat just winging life Good luck
@ocean6869 ай бұрын
5mm plate sounds heavy. I would have thought 3mm would have been enough for this patching job. WW2 MTB's hulls were 3mm plate. 5mm on top of pitted 5mm will add to your draught in a big way. The hull is shot, but overplating is the best and cheapest bodge option, but use 3mm to save £

Rust has got your boat sadly. Possibly £20000 to put right and when you finish I suspect you will not be confident in the long term result. People have suggested a go fund me and that’s a good idea, but put the money to buying a better boat with a full survey and one that’s already insulated. If it was me I'd risk the fire, so long as you've planned for it to happen and have the means to put it out promptly. I'd have some long enough 10mm copper pipe connected to C02 pub gas bottles (or c02 fire extinguishers) to get close to any flame, and then plenty of backup fire extinguishers should the worst happen - obviously do research which type is going to be best. Bearing in mind the limited access my thought would be pump the whole enclosed area full of c02, but then there's water as well, so long as you can get it in fast. I'd say cleaning off the foam within a couple of inches of the weld line would be best, there will be less to burn then, but even remnants are likely to catch so be ready. I see no reason why you shouldn't wet it prior to welding, which should help any spread. Bear in mind any fumes/smoke from burning foam is likely to be poisonous. Good luck with it!
