BOAT WORK Vol 1. TEAK RESTORATION of 30 year old SAILING YACHT

Join us this week as we tackle our first big project on our 48ft Franchini sailboat; restoring the teak wood on our toe rails, cockpit, and our fold down stern seats. In this video, we figure out the best process for this, which includes a LOT of sanding, come rain or shine. We learnt a lot over this week, and we felt we reaped the rewards of our work after seeing the finished result.

There’s always work to do on a boat, that’s why I love them so much! There’s no substitute to having to do the work yourself, it’s how we learn to look after these sea ladies. You’re doing a great job and you’re exactly right about learning every bit of the boat. When you’re in that storm and one of the systems starts playing up, you need to be able to get on top of the problem asap. Looking forward to future vids.

Hi Ash and Eloise, just watched it through and mighty impressed with your labours ! I feel a bit guilty we had not done that some time ago. Very happy to see her getting a new lease of life and feel she is in good hands now. Also love the style of your videos, imagine I am with you ! Will be in touch, well done, love and best wishes from us all, Stewart XX ⛵️

You guys have an amazing journey ahead. Love what you are doing. I'm not a woodworker or a sailor, but those splits in your rail anchors won't be secured by epoxy alone. Imo you've spent all that time and effort you should have shored up the strength using some dovetail/ bowtie cuts or something. It could save your life at sea one day. I wish you guys luck and will follow your journey vicariously.

Looking good guys :) Can I recommend you guys spend some evening hours watching Mads and Ava on Sail Life? Mads is a master of explaining diy things like how to work with epoxy and 406 etc and how to lay up glass etc, I've been sailing and working with boats for 40 years, but he's still managed to teach me a thing or two! btw.. The "two seats at the back [stern]" are known as "Gin and Tonic Seats"

great job rejuvenating the wood. Little tip: when ever you have a case where you need to repair, or even make an new, hole, make it bigger than needed, fill it with thickened epoxy. then drill the hole you need through the epoxy. That way the surrounding wood, or core of the boat, is sealed from water damage by the epoxy, while the screw touches only epoxy.

Fine job! Don’t be afraid to use a very sharp scraper to remove finishes from teak. Esp in the inside corners. I learned from an old painter and often you can scrape an area and not need to sand it if you do it right. MUCH easier than sanding. Anyway nice job keep it up!

For any future teak sanding, you want to keep all the dust in a pot and keep it to one side. Then when needed you can mix it with a wood glue to make a teak filler.

That white powder is called fumed silica. It's basically glass. It's used to thicken epoxy. Keep in mind epoxy does not do very well in sunlight. Most people use butyl tape for caulking around stanchions. If you have water in your screw holes make sure you dry it thoroughly before epoxy. I would drill the holes out and let it dry and then add the epoxy let it sit and then we drill. Then use your butyl tape to seal around the screws and the flanges.
@SailingSeaGypsy
@SailingSeaGypsy Ай бұрын
Thank you very much, we have noted this for next time. We used Sikaflex structural adhesive to glue the stanchions down and seal them so hopefully that will be sufficient😁

@@SailingSeaGypsy After the first repair, (I expect it wasn’t clamped then either) water got in between the resin and the wood which caused it to re split, by clamping you reduce this possibility as there is no room for water to get in. You effectively close the gap.

I always look forward to your videos and I noticed that we get one a month which is fine. I bet you get loads of questions and obviously impossible for you to answer them all, but mine is I was just wondering what your intention is to get the mould off the canvas canopy or is it a spray hood? I am no expert also I noticed there is another section of canopy lay down at the back. It will be interesting to see that in position and see what it looks like anyway to say I’m impressed with your channel is an understatement you both come across as super genuine, which is half the battle on KZbin, carry on being just like you are and you both will win through😊x😊

So, for your fridge, if you have not fixed it yet. Remove the rest of the broken trim. Get a piece of two-inch aluminium strip that is the full width of the fridge. Hi there. The teak looks good. However, in the long run, teak will look nicer if untreated. As an alternative for cleaning it 1-2 times a year, use Oxalic acid (from your drugstore) or lemon juce (we get it concentrated at the supermarket). Drip it onto the teak and spread it with a soft brush. After 10min, wash it off and you are done. Good luck you two! Silvano

Hi Silvano. How are you? Thanks for the comment, that’s really interesting! We will keep that in mind in regards to the oxalic acid and lemon juice. Great video! From an old guy who paid the price please wear masks when sanding, and especially when using colloidal silica. Your future self will thank you!

It would be better to make teak dowels and resin those into the holes and then redrill. Even if it means redrilling the holes to fit the dowels. I wouldn't just fill the holes with resin.

That’s a shout, I’ll see how they hold as I’ve siliconed them on now but definitely noted. Thank you

Nice video guys...I like the end result :) But... Everyone looking at you in the car about to open the 406 Silica (nasty stuff to breath in) going "Noooo!" Then watching you rub it on your hand going "Noooooo!" Then watching you sniff it going "Nooooooooooo!!

Complete admiration for you both, what a great Chanel. Your videos are fantastic and it’s great to see the boat coming along. Could you tell me which chandlery you visited please? I’m based in the north east. Keep up the good work

Thank you so much, what a lovely comment 😊 We ended up in Limington as we were south for the weekend. But the closest to us are Glasson and Preston as far as we know

@@SailingSeaGypsy No worries at all and thank you, I’m currently restoring my boat although not like yours it’s an old classic speedboat here in Teesside and I wondered about the chandlers you featured and where it was so thank you

Hi would you recommend the Semco as a good sealer - I’m just about to do mine and still trying to choose the right one 🤦‍♂️

Yes absolutely! We got the ‘natural’ one and we wanted something that had a minimal effect. Numerous people came up and asked if we were going to seal it with anything after we had sealed it so it didn’t change the appearance of it at all. A lot of the research we found says people really liked it as it was the first sealant they used that lasted a season. However, it is the only one we have used so we can’t give the best overall opinion as we haven’t tried any other brands😊 Hope that helps😁

Its a Franchini 45, an Italian boat. I had the same some years ago. Very sturdy, extremely strongly built vessel.
