Especially when you consider a car breaking down on the side of the road isn’t such a risk to all occupants; as opposed to a boat being 15 miles out in the gulf and suddenly no electricity (which powers bilge pumps among other things).

i bought a 15ft boat with a running 2 stroke engine. 2 weeks ago, the starbord, port lights are brand new got them for free since they followed with the boat., lantern i got for free, the only thing i paid for was the new paint, ancher, rope, and some boat cleaner, there is no fee to let your boat out at the marina here, i already have first aid kit, and a fire estingusher, i only use it in the lakes here to fish. the boat cost me 1709 pounds including a good trailer. and i have just bought 175 pounds worth of items. so it really depends on person to person, but i really like your opinion it helps people understand that owning a boat is not cheap, and i have a boat saving fund of another 2000 pounds just for emergency if i need new parts or anything. so money wise its planned out, and i love taking my dad and brother out fishing every chance i get, its really worth it the memories i get is priceless. and im the same as you i want my kids to grow up with boats and make a good memory with them, when it comes to fishing and the ocean. in my personal opinion if you have the money and the time i would say buy a boat, you will not regret it, but dont buy a to big of a boat.

I've owned several boats and I always say never again, but as soon as it's summer I start looking and buy one. Then after a few years sell it. They always break down new or old, they always have some issue. They always need cleaning, moving, storing, fuel, maintenance, then the trailer needs work. It never ends with a boat until it's parked and winterized for the end of the season. I ended up doing away with boats, and buying 2 older 2 stroke jet skis. Those things are easy to maintain, fast, easy to trailer, use a lot less fuel, I can do most of the work myself and don't take up a lot of room in the barn like the boats did. It still gets me out on the lake and doesn't cost a lot of money. The lakes only 15 minutes from my house, and it's really easy to trailer the jet ski instead of a 30 foot boat for the weekend. I hated pulling the boat in and out of the water everytime. I do miss being able to sleep on the boat overnight. I think long term a small cottage on a canal off the lake would be the best option for a quick weekend get away. That will be easier to maintain then a boat.

I sold my motorcycle and used that money to get our boat. To me it’s not worth it going thousands into debt for something that will not make you money in return. Cars? Was getting water in fuel old tank from when I had bought from owner. Spent the weekend getting the grime off it sitting, scrubbing out side and inside. Used blueberry boat wash on inside near cuddy for good smell. Need hardware u bolts from load rite for trailer they are getting rusty. Will have marina do this when out at Jordan lake, boat off trailer. After that should be ship shape again if charge battery I need twice a week if not used. Liquid battery cheaper than gel, but gel needs special charger.

It's all about making money from the financing. They make more from the financing than the boat itself. This ought to tell you something. I agree on buying a used boat. Thee's a lot of boats out there with many years of ownership and vey low hours. However, this should tell you something about boat ownership in general. Many people buy the boat and use it very little. This will most likely be you. Boating is not a very good solo hobby, you depend on other people to go with you and you will end up not using the boat as much as you think you will.

I work on boats here on the west coast of Florida and these are by far the worst boats you can buy. I would go as far to say to not buy a boat in Florida. The engines have had it. I usually do diesels and it's getting the point that they're not even metal anymore. Some are all rotted away and turning into powder. The stuffing boxes are beyond proper use and need to be replaced asap. I just had an engine cooler explode on me today. The problem is that most owners don't take proper care of them and they turn to junk. By the time I show up. They don't run and looking at a complete overhaul or replace. The problem is they just want the old engine running so they can sell it. It's madness.

Mostly boomers though. We even have a few that were born in the 30's. They see a problem and they ignore it till it's almost too late. The other problem is finding the cheapest work possible. This has screwed us and the customer alot. Some just take the deposit and run away. I can't even put blame all on the current owner. Most of these vessels have had atleast 4+ plus owners since new and most have the throttle pushed all the way for most of its life. I have started to suggest gassers over diesels. Unless you're going to travel the world, Don't get get a diesel. A price to change a turbo cost more then replacing a complete gas engine(depending on year and series of engine). One customer I nearly turned him three shades of white when I told him that is all wrong with it. These old detroits have had it. The last few I looked at were in extreme poor condition. I couldn't even take the blowers off without them turning into dust. Next thing to add in is termites. I have this with my boat and they're a pain to get rid of.

The most important with boating is to get out on the water and have a nice time waterskiing bathing etc. When then is said, have the most simpel and as small as you comfortable with. I live in Norway and the baoting season is short. Last winter I tried to store it outdoor but i did not get the a-frame hig enoug and the boat got full of water. I empty it and and it was disgusting inside. But because it is so simple with waterproof finer and no carpet I just powerwashed it and washed it for 45 min and it was kinda decent. I wax it no and then, and its quick because its a small boat. Only thing that broken full of water was the main switch, and it cost 40 dollar and 5 min to Fix. Its 17fot and have 3 vindow windscreen and 2 part canvas top, that I can fold down when using it. Had the boat since 2002 and it only worth as I much as I take care of it. Next year I will change out the old 2002 50hp 2 stroke Johnson outboard with a Brand new Honda BF 60hp that cost more that i gave for the complet boat, motor and trailer back in 2002, but I’m looking forward to next boating season, and I will enjoy it for many more years to come. My point is that that I can skip a whole season boating and don’t feel like I’m loosing money. Its paid for, no expensive harbor fee. INVEST too much money and force ourself to be out on the water as much you can to feel its the money worth is a wrong strategy. If you and your Family are living in the boat for weeks during summer holliday you need bigger boat than we have of course, but same ther rather a smaller boat and rent a cabin or book in to a hotel along your route, and wash your hair and cloths there instead of a big boat with all the features, and dont let that hurt your pride. There will always be sombody with bigger, newer more fancy boat all the way up to oligarc yachts cost billions. Thanks for your video, greeting from Oslo Norway

The biggest misconception that people have about boats are they are maintenance free. A boat, any boat, requires maintenance, If you spend five hours boating around, plan on working on the boat and trailer for at least two...did we forget the trailer? Bunks break, rollers fail, tires go bald, wheel bearings fail, lights go out, winches break. Most of the time, you are not just buying a boat. Boats now have 2+ engines, so you have 2 times plus the maintenance on engine(s). Boats aren't, nor every have they been, maintenance free, if you can't do it, you're paying for it to be done. If you don't, your $50,000 will be lucky to be worth $2,000 when you sell it, talk about depreciation, if it doesn't sink first..

Salt water destroys everything,need to do your own maintenance,unless you have plenty of money
@dwayneroberts6616 Жыл бұрын
If you're not committed to boating then it's a really bad investment. If you love being out on the water and it makes you happy then go for it. I don't care what boat you buy if its used it's going to need work and time taken to make it yours. If you're the type of person who hates working on things foget it. Unless you're well off but then you probably wouldn't be buying a used boat. If you don't love your boat and want to wash and wax it and keep it nice then get out of boating because you're boats going to be a money pit when it falls apart. I also hate to see a nice boat get treated like crap.

Small question for you boss: I’m think about to buy 2016 54hours boat. 54hours is it a lot or no?
@BoatBuyersSecretWeapon Жыл бұрын
That's on the super low side, figure 50 hours/ year is average on a lake boat. More for surf boat, bass boat or coastal boat on average.
@n-da-bunka2650 Жыл бұрын
Keep it at your OWN dock. Yea, those can also be expensive but if you own your lakefront home then those $'s invested into a dock would be more than worth it.
@jasonhurdlow6607Ай бұрын
😂 You have to be a multimillionaire where I live to even consider buying lake-front property. I'm pretty sure any boat slip or storage fee is far cheaper than just obtaining that property, a dock for it is just a rounding error.

Thanks for the info.. I've seen a Carlson scimitar at 13.000 euros but the owners ad says needs an engine change " is this a big no no ?
@BoatBuyersSecretWeapon7 ай бұрын
Not familiar with that particular boat but depends on why the engine needs to be replaced. What options are available to re-power and assume it will be more (and may find other issues) than the inital estimate provided. Then determine is 13K EU a good price

If you want to enjoy having a boat. Buy, max 6 meters, model fisherman. Nothing bigger that you cant drag out from the sea with car or with 5-6 guys. There are even fishermans that have mini cabins under console with bed and pooping place. Only outboard engines that you need are yamaha or honda 40. And you need two motors with separate gasoline tanks, so you can drive, in case that one dies. Those engines are 100kg, carryable by 2 adult guys. Anything more than that, with all due respect, is un-smart or un-wise. I have 3 boats, around 5 m, i have no problem owning them, i dont have headaches or stress. They are like bicycles, every two years painting, applying antifouling, engine servicing, flushing, changing oils, impelers, its all children play with few screws to loosen up. I am alone with those boats in my place, everything around me are bigger motor boats and sailboats. I go fishing almost every week and i never see anyone going out, and even if they come, they are constantly fixing something haha

Just because it's new has nothing to do with is it good. If you don't know how to do some basic maintenance then boat ownership is not for you. There are many options to get out on the water without ownership of a boat.
