My brother in law Willie and I took a 10 and a half foot Jon boat out with a 1957 five hp 2 stroke blue smoker near Morehead City, NC. We did not know anything about the ocean other than playing in the surf. The ocean was a smooth as any lake I had ever been on. We had our lunch which was a loaf of bread, jar of Jif peanut butter and a two liter Coke. We went out so far that there was a huge ship with water pumping out of it that was at least 6 foot in diameter. We motored under the giant plume of water and the boat itself. When we came out the crew saw us and was yelling at us in a foreign language that seemed Asian. They were really excited and were pointing and yelling loudly. We were really far out with land still being seen. That's when it hit us that we were as stupid as can be. We both yelled at the same time "we need to go back!!!!" The good Lord was watching out for the two stupid ones and he got us back into the town of Beaufort NC. As soon as we got back into the international waterway the weather turned. No more calm, slick glass water. 3 foot waves. Almost lost the little Jon boat. At one point we had to beach the boat on an island and carry it to the other side to calmer water. This happened about 1990 or so. Wow were we ever so stupid and lucky.

I think it’s less about the vessel and more about the operator however that being said not all hulls are created equal and experienced operators will gravitate to quality boats like Grady White’s( my personal choice) and of course the length of the boat plays a big part whaler‘s are better than Bayliner‘s but a 30 foot bayliner will handle the slop better than a 15 foot whaler , but you still see people in $3 million HCBs stuff their bow 🤣

Trim up, get the front of the boat in the air and pull back on the gas some and just ride them. People screw up slowing down and letting waves control them or going to fast landing hard
@mattaltiery90813 жыл бұрын
I’ve never driven a boat but I believe you have to moderate the throttle and slow down and time the waves as they’re going in… you slow down to catch the wave then throttle up lightly to stay in the wave and ride it into the inlet?? I’m not sure just guessing 😂
@TXH11383 жыл бұрын
@@mattaltiery9081 depends on if you are going with or against the waves. How long your boat is and how far apart the wave tops are.
@kristofferrydquist83843 жыл бұрын
Those big off-shore race type boats with long hulls can get away with going full power on short waves, perhaps also some of the RIBs too as they excel in rough seas. The rest, yes trim up and try to find a speed where you don’t fly, stomp or nose in, while still maintaining control and direction. That speed may be different for every wave in conditions like these. Also it can help to turn a bit too to give the boat space to settle between wave peaks. Fighting the sea is pretty futile in the long run. There are some smooth captains occasionally on this channel who have tremendous skill and makes this look almost too easy. 😅
