The Graveyard of the Pacific has claimed over 2,000 ships and hundreds of lives. Yet, ships have tried to cross it for centuries.

My Great grandmother Lizzie May McQuinn was the cook at the U.S. Lifesaving Station at Cape Dissapointment form 1900 to 1908. I was on my dads boat when the Coast Guard pulled us off 2 min before a 25ft. breaker rolled it on the tip of the N. jetty in 1969. I had over 400 trips across that Columbia bar by my 18 birthday.

Should do one on the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The USCG trains at Columbia river because the surf at Cape Hatteras NC (the Graveyard of the Atlantic) is "too unpredictable and too dangerous for training"

I worked 30 years on the USACE Dredge Yaquina and Essayons dredging this bar and all others on the west coast. Not a job for the faint of heart.
