I was there in the 1960! Alot of abandoned buildings along the way then! I'm sure things have changed

Today there are homes, some worth over a million dollars, overlooking that stretch of the river. A different world, and yet the river itself feels the same.

The video brought to life my great grandfather’s run through Miles Canyon on May 3, 1898. Along with three other “stampeders” they launched the boat they built at the foot of Lake Marsh on May 2nd. and camped within two miles of the canyon that evening. At that time the Canyon City post had not yet been established. They broke camp the next morning and went through the canyon all right and made it to White Horse Rapids before midnight. In 1898 the ice broke upstream on May 29th. and a great flotilla of boats were on the move to the gold fields.

And that's when the water was seriously rough (!!!), before the dam was built in 1958. Thanks for sharing that, Doug.

brings back a lot of memories. Did the same trip in 1976 with 12' aluminum boat with a 9.9 on the back, with my dog standing in the bow. Still looks fantastic, love it!

I love Miles Canyon !!! great to see this up to date Vid.of her !!! Has many great memories for me !!! ---Mind you ,,.probably not for one of my 1st Registered Siberian Huskies !!! Poor little fellow,,took him, with me & Friends on a jaunt to Miles Canyon ,,crossed the bridge & he got loose & chased a Porcupine !!! Well, ,he was about a 100 yds away ,but his howls led us to him,, his poor little face was covered in Quills !!!.. As a MEDICAL PERSON,,, I knew they were barbed ,,so,,realized ,,Hey ,,we needed a Vet ,with the proper tools !!! Long & short of it all,,,, was after 150 quills ,removed ,,he survived his ordeal !!! Ah,,not so much my bank account !!! But ,I think ,he & I ,, learned ,,valuable lessons !!! :))).... I , did not let him , run loose again & he became quite TEPID about approaching other Animals !! :)) All,that aside ,,,,I HOPE THAT ALL ,,THAT VISIT MILES CANYON ,WILL ENJOY IT ,,& UNDERSTAND THE HISTORY OF IT !! AND TO ALL THAT DO ,, BLESS YOU ALL !!! AND ALL THE VERY BEST !!!

Also note the island on the right at the entrance. The water level is up at least 25 - 30' from back then. www.hougengroup.com/media/story_photos/1947canyon.jpg

I would hazard a guess that today's water level is where the life preservers are on the second deck. steamboats.com/jpgs/strclifford.jpg
