We take on a different project in this weeks episode- Troubleshooting a 2000 Ski Nautique with a Ford 351 Engine- Branded as a PCM GT40. This boat belongs to a good friend of my dad and we take on the challenge of trying to find the problem of a random miss/no start/ no hot start situation. Thanks for watching!

The Ford 351 Windsor had a plateau like torque curve. Probably the most skied behind inboards. That hall effect sensor and e-coil will light you up. One of my "fashionable" students was diagnosing a miss and heard a plug wire snapping. He leaned in and the missing cylinder nailed him right in the earring! They will also start and idle with half the plugs disconnected. Did that in class to prove to the students to check the basics. Just because it will start ... If it is cutting out around 2500rpm, it could be perfectly normal "limp home" due to a faulty temperature sensor.

Great work Sam! I learned a lot watching this video. I have had a hot restart issue with this boat for 5 years. I was starting to lose friends from the carbon monoxide! Most folks just buy a rebuilt PCA for $1100 without figuring out the source of the problem. The biggest issue with my boat was when you shut the engine off for 5 minutes between skiers, it would not restart until the engine was completely cool. It seems that was because the Hall effect sensor loosened up when it got hot? I guess I could have told you I left the coil disconnected from when I did my compression checks! I really did not want to give up on her because the 2000 ski nautique 196 with TSC1 hull has a great wake and the PCM Ford 351 GT-40 has plenty of power. Thanks so much for the rescue! Matt

Not many know how to use a scope anymore. Great troubleshooting. The Hall effect sensor would also hate any rust or filings from the contact and would give a bad signal back to the ECM. With ignition, clean is king..

Good video. Interesting problem. I have found the 2 main issues when working on boats. Fuel being number 1. People let it sit over the winter and it phase separates. Corrosion being number 2. As you found in the distributor. But, also the main wire harness connector will give you the same symptoms. Or even a corroded ground. Pretty clean boat for it's age. Thank you Sam. Cheers.

Nothing more fun than troubleshooting old Ford TFI and EFI systems. Slop in the distrib can cause a lot of headaches along with the pip sensor. Best thing I did was go to a Megasquirt stand alone PCM on my Mustang with a crank trigger

I’ve got a 1993 ford lightning with the 351. Chased an intermittent heat related ignition issue for a couple weeks. It was the pip sensor. It’s common enough I keep a spare one around now. Not a bad repair with a small shop press to assist and once you know what to look for. I only use the motorcraft stuff for anything electronic now. The parts store stuff is garbage. Great video! Warning on the boat stuff… if you run it dry even for a few seconds it can burn up the rubber water impeller extremely quick. The owner may want to freshen that up now in the spring. It really should be done every couple years anyway. When they fail, it will overheat in a hurry.

I used to have one of those motors, the long fuel canister in the front corner has a high pressure fuel pump in it that blows a hose and causes low fuel pressure. You have to unscrew the housing to get the high pressure pump, filter and hose. The stock fuel pump is a transfer pump. It wil run at low speed but not under load due to the low pressure. It goes into a limp mode.

The symptoms that you explained would have led me to believe coil or electronic ignition because it would get worse with high temperature. Even though your pico scope is from the stone ages 😂😂 you could see it when you first hooked it up. When you adjusted it, the peaks should have been equal. It's hard to explain in a comment, but if you would like to learn more about it, Eric from South Main Auto has some really good videos on it. Good job fixin it without to much of a hassle.

Once you rule out the obvious leads/cap/plugs/rotor the top 2 causes for misfires on any electronic ignition Ford engine from the 70's onward are the ignition module and the Hall effect sensor, coils usually last forever (especially the newer transformer style ones) but the more fragile electronic parts don't fair well with heat cycles and vibration.

I have a somewhat similar problem on the S&S V Twin on my Morgan Three Wheeler. Particularly noticeably as being a hard starter. I have come to the conclusion that it is a weak crankshaft position sensor which controls the spark. These were currently out of stock at most Morgan dealers and S&S as well. Fortunately a UK based engineer has come up with a fitting kit to use a Kia sensor and it is half the price for the whole kit compared with the original S&S sensor.

Great presentation. What ya know about Kubota 4 cyl diesels. I've got a B3200 4 cyl diesel that smokes up a storm at cold starts. After that zero smoke. I've been told it needs valve guide seals another line said it is just unburned fuel on starting.

PCM or INDMAR use the ford small blocks for ski boat applications. They use the ford small block because they have a narrower block and hence a slight bit more room in the boat than a 5.7 Chev.

Look at an ecm print to see if that ecm has 8 injector drivers and only using 2, if so you can repin and use another injector driver. My money is on the coil, TFI module or pick up in distributor though since them faulting was one of the biggest issues with them in mustangs, F series and CVs back in the day

the problem seems to be on the timing sensors which are most probably on the fly-wheel that has collected iron filings because they are magnetic and it distorts the pulse to your electronic engine control module

That would be the fault that came to my mind when you had looked at the other electrical parts. I had the same problem in my car which is an older mercedes. Starts and runs like a dream until the engine warms up, shuts off and after waiting long enough for the engine to cool it starts again and gets a few miles. The spare part cost 7$ and it took 2 days to replace it.
