Five thumbs, I used to work for Boston Whaler Norwell Ma. back in the days before chop had color per % inch.. We Taped the hulls for voids three to four times them a inspector would go over what we checked over.. Gelcoat voids we would drill two holes one to fill the other was to exit the resin ,... Thx bud you bring back some great times working on boats.. gotta love the smell of resin or get a wooden boat... lol

Thank you!!! Your entire video collection is priceless. I'm fairly handy and meticulous but don't know all the finer details in process, and do's and don'ts. You take the time to go into great detail and stay entertaining. Thanks a lot. I'll surely be contributing. We just bought our first boat after more than a year of looking and learning (the good, the bad, the ugly). Every boat has a compromise. We ended up purchasing a 1977 C&C 36 with only 2 previous, and meticulous owners. A few chips and stress cracks (nothing structural) on the deck and that's about it. Interior is well maintained but shows her age in some areas (UV damage, scuffing, etc) nothing drastic. An amazing find is largely due to previous owners!!!. The Hull below the waterline is cored but completely dry (meticulous owners). We will learn a lot on this boat (all systems, sailing, maintenance, etc) over the next few years before we upgrade to substantially cruise.

You do a great job of dumbing this area of expertise down for us newbies... I realize this must be difficult to explain to us your abilities and skill set in layman's terms. About like explaining or training new people how to do our jobs we do everyday without leaving out parts we don't have to think about any more since it's repetitious and ingrained into our routine. Thanks I learned alot and more feel confident tackling my project 1986 Glasstream runabout. Mine is dark grey or faded black with glitter... and white on the bottom. fixing the cosmetic issues seem easy enough except for color matching with glitter... Thanks again very informative.

Andy - Thanks for the videos - answered a lot of questions. I am "restoring" a 1974 Boston Whaler 13' Sport - it is in pretty good shape, but previous owners punched a bunch of small mounting holes and painted it several times, inside and out and glued carpeting to the no-slip deck. So I'm stripping and sanding the entire boat for refinishing. I would prefer to re-gelcoat the entire boat, mainly for durability but also for authenticity. Most marine forum discussions seem to prefer paint - your thoughts, please. I'd be happy to share photos of the entire project.

Dennis Fortna Paint. Gelcoating that size area is a LOT of work with little benefit. Paint can be touched up just as easily as gelcoat and you won't have to deal with color matching the gelcoat everytime you need to fix a chip or scratch :-)

Thanks for the instruction, just what I was looking for. When blending gelcoat to the surrounding area, is there any prep going from the repair area to glossy undamaged gelcoat, there will evidently be some material beyond the 400 grit scratches. Does this buff off without a transition line?

You are the man Andy! I have tried to do a small repair where I taped up around the area with masking tape, but when I sand it back I can see the fibreglass showing through like I've taken too much of the gelcoat back off and it hasn't blended into the surrounding area... Would you still treat a small area repair like you did in this video by sounding down the outside so it feathers the new into the old, if this makes sense? Thanks mate 👍

When you were color matching the gel coat......you were laying out little swatch tests in a row across the area you wet sanded. How did you remove them once you achieved your color? Did you wipe them off with acetone? or did you let them dry and sand them off? Question 2...you used MEK as a catalyst in gel coat but used MEK-P as a sealer to cure laminate resin. are they 2 different products or are they both MEK-P?
@boatworkstoday
@boatworkstoday 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, the color samples were all done over freshly sanded gelcoat so I could see the true, non-oxidized color of the gelcoat. Since none of these samples were catalyzed, I was able to wipe them off using acetone :-) The Mek-p is the catalyst for all poly based resins (whether gelcoat, or laminating resin used for fiberglass). The material used for sealing and curing the surface is PVA (Poly Vinyl Alcohol).. Hope this helps!

If you can find a chip or scratch somewhere on the hull, look to see how thick the outer film is. Gelcoat is generally 1/16" or thicker; paint is paper thin. That's about the best way I know of :-)
@thereverand15
@thereverand15 8 жыл бұрын
Do you ever do any repairs with other colours of gel coat? Building canoes we often use darker colours which seem to be a little more difficult in perfecting the final finish. It would also help your audience see a little more detail in the work you're doing as it is hard to see any of your sanding marks or gel coat application with the white. Great videos, keep up the good work!
@boatworkstoday

I do, but generally it's during the Summer and in the marina's (not in the shop). Most of the projects that I work on in the video's are customer jobs, and as I'm sure you know 90% of all the boats out there are a variation of white :-/ But if I ever have the chance to record a dark color, I certainly will!!

I have a boat with a very rough surface due to a certain someone sanding down a surface that had a non slip additive. We are trying to fix the problem by doing layer upon layer of gel coats. It currently looks like a rusty surface that has been painted over. I noticed you mentioned PVA and I was wondering if adding PVA to the gelcoat mix would give me a thinker coat? Also do we need to sand between each application or just the final coat?

Thank You for making this video is very informative, you are good, what is PVA? is a catalyst
@mattmcgahan
@mattmcgahan 3 жыл бұрын
No it's not a catalyst. It seals the laminating resin surface from air so it will cure ie harden. If it is non laminating resin being used, it will have a wax added that rises to the surface to do the sealing job and PVA is not needed. It stands for 'polyvinyl acetate', so is basically the white wood glue you may have seen. This would be thicker than needed for sealing so dilute with water 50/50. You'll likely see it in hardware stores already diluted for sealing new plaster walls before painting or hanging wallpaper.

I'm confused. So you only use laminating gel coat? I have gel coat with wax but was told can only use last. What's the point of using gel coat with wax if it can only be put on last and not layered? Do I have to just use gel coat without wax then? So confusing..
@bowersish9489
@bowersish9489 4 ай бұрын
Hey don't know if you're still confused but there's both a laminating and a finishing gelcoat. A laminating gelcoat doesn't have a wax and the finishing one does. I'm no pro but just like when you need to starve the resin of oxygen when using a layering polyester resin you'll want to seal your top layer of gelcoat with a top coat of waxed gelcoat.
