I feel a great deal of pride and shame at the same time when listening to men like bob Doyle . He makes me so proud of his generation and so ashamed of mine.

Much thanks for posting this. We don't hear much about the International Brigades in North America but they fought the good fight. They're political leaders failed them and left Spain in the hands of the hardliners for decades. We need more men like Bob Doyle, Hemingway, and the rest from all over who knew the difference between right and wrong. And, of course, had the guts to do something about it all on their own.

Don't forget 1st black American to lead white troops into battle. The legend Oliver law. Never remembered by us for his role in trying to defeat fascism

Thank you for uploading this. I only recently came across the International Brigade and the Conolly Column. Remarkable how much unity there was across all nations to fight against Fascism. It feels though that history is almost doomed to repeat itself as today in 2024 it feels like Fascism is yet again on the rise. We need men and women with even half the courage of Bob Doyle to once again stand against Fascism.

700 Irish joined la bandera Irlandesa, and followed Franco during the Civil War. The unit was formed by the politician Eoin O'Duffy. We don't hear so much about those lads!
@MrCOUNTYCORK5 жыл бұрын
Very true the blueshirts were a fascist group that are now Irelands fine gael party, started by middle class farmers and the more well to do class, made up of mostly pro treaty force members, they feared a backlash from the non treaty force members that had come into government under develera during the 30s, because of atrocities they committed during the civil war in Ireland.

(1) I probably should not have used the term Irish Republicanism.The IRA was founded in 1919 as a continuation of the Irish volunteers (the guys who carried out the 1916 rising).They were made up of nationalists,Marxists, Catholic Fundamentalists and others.After the Anglo-Irish agreement in 1921 Witch made the 26 counties a free-state like Canada and the other 6 got home rule like Scotland.Those who supported the agreement became the Free state army and those who opposed remained the IRA.
@SepticPeg5 жыл бұрын
The Irish Citizens army led by James Connolly are were separate from the volunteers and a precursor to the Irish labour party, after the treaty basically pro treaty Fine Gael and anti Treaty Fianna Fail, FF still call themselves The Republican party.
@MrSpacehopper12312 жыл бұрын
yes i did remove it but i was planning to re-word the comment What i was saying was that the sectarian tradition began in Irish republicanism began in the 50's and 60's but back in the 30's they were mainly Marxist.I also wanted to point out that the man who invented the idea of Irish republicanism was himself a protestant.Can you explain exactly which part of that is nonsensical?
@jakenconor3 жыл бұрын
There has always been an element of sectarianism around... Back to the plantations. The planters brought it here. It was their method of domination.

There is no indication that the vast majority of Irish supported Franco by any stretch of the imagination. They were not Communists either. Too many had relatives in the USA and were not overly enthusiastic about Hitler or Fascism in general. You need to quit trying to sound smart when you aren't.

First of all i and many other Irish people do not consider the UK our enemy.As a matter of fact politically speaking Britain is Ireland's closest Allie and trading partner.I also have a lot of family in the UK.Secondly it sounds like your only assuming the Irish government and the Nazi regime when all the evidence is pointing the other way.
