Yes Dylan is a brilliant writer. The best. After 45 years of listening to his music I Still hear new stuff sometimes. Perfect example although something that was clear to me right away would come from Tombstone Blues. The Gypsy Davy verse. References both biblical and racial inequities during the Vietnam war. Fattens the slaves and sends them out into the jungle. But I can't for the life of me see where Mac finger and Louis the King represent aside from a very funny dylan-esque rhyme, or have anything to do with Western culture or history. Even his great take on The Abrahamic bargain is a great rhyme and a brilliant As It Gets. but not even close to as deep as he goes. I would say Tombstone Blues from this record or it's alright Ma or the whole second side of bringing it all back home for that matter are much better example of that which you speak. But hey we all love Dylan right. I'm glad you get that out of it.

How he created a whole world of art that effected all the art forms around him, how he changed the way everyone thought and perceived, how he created the most powerful artistic form out of scraps that were just hanging around....it's breath-taking, especially how he did it at such a young age, and did so much...ten albums in 7 years.....

When Like a Rolling Stone hit the radio in '65, it was a 'sea change' for music and songwriting. . .so huge and perfect that, as you said, people too young at the time can't fully understand the effect it had. I feel lucky to have been there for it... Dylan was my first concert, that spring, my dad took me. That was the last place on earth he wanted to be, a sacrifice which I didn't fully appreciate until later...thank you Dad.

@@AlexDMC The word “delusional” is a common place to hide for those who can’t think deeply, these days. What I said is true. He effected art, poetry, film, music. Andy Warhol, the Beatles, Alan Ginsberg, many others were fascinated by his work at the time. There weren’t a lot of places back then you could hear the ideas expressed in Masters of War, With God on Our Side, The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll, North Country Blues, The Ballad of Hollis Brown etc etc…..and then the absurdist songs like Tombstone Blues, or the power of Subterranean Homesick Blues…..he wasn’t given the Nobel Prize for LITERATURE for nothing. People hung on his every word and quoted him all the time. When you found a fellow Dylan- ite, you immediately bonded. He wasn’t that well-known in the mainstream until years into his career. A lot of people dismissed him because of his unusual voice….or should I say voices, since he changed the from album to album….the Nobel Committee also noted his influence on the arts in general

Highway 61 is a real highway that runs down the Mississippi River to New Orleans, and it's known as the Blues highway because it's connected to a lot of Blues history. As far as Bob's anecdotes that he says happen on Highway 61, don't think about them too hard, just see them play out in your head. I don't think it's always important to decode a hidden meaning to lyrics that are intentionally abstract. Just let them paint a picture in your head and enjoy it, whatever it may be.

one of my favorite Dylan songs; the words are brilliant, the tune, rhythm and arrangement still grab me after over half a century

I didnt know this song existed until the movie Walk the Line came out. The second they played it during that scene, I absolutely knew it was Dylan and immediately fell in love with it. I couldnt get the lyrics out of my head and had it memorized within a couple of days. Gotta Say, definitely my favorite song by the best lyricist of all time!!
