Unfortunately his concerts nowadays aren’t very good. I had the opportunity to go to one and I was very dissatisfied. He did not show much enthusiasm and we were not allowed to record or even have access to our phones (probably because nobody would go if they saw how bad it was). If you were able to go to a concert where he actually tried and made an effort I envy you.

You can continue the argument about who is the greatest rock star. Dylan is just the king of song writing, written and produced 40+ albums. To me, Richards is the poster boy for the definition " Rock Star ". Stones aren't my favorite band, or is Richards my favorite musician but when people say " party like a rockstar"? They can try but nobody partied like Keith Richards.

DetailedRecruiting. You hit it, brother. A true artist doesn't run out of material because messages, memories, and ideas are the atmosphere they live in. Little Bobby Zimmerman knew he had a mission even while he was still a child trying to memorize chords. Start your life as an artist by reading a poem a day -- read it with the attention you would give it if it was directions to the secret treasure you will never need and never receive. The universe needs you.

When the Columbia Records lawyers first rejected this version, Dylan tried to edit the song but found it was too difficult. So he decided to just re-record the whole thing. History is glad he did because the re-recorded version is sped up and has a more urgent tone. This version is great as well and it's awesome to hear it. For the curious, there are about 10 other great backstories to this song which are explored in the following video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGKuhGR6e7Cqh80

He played this version on pbs in 1975.bob has always changed lyrics to his songs.he also changed at the last minute from a d chord to a c chord.notice how much slower and deeper this version sounds .?everything was sharper. the insanity that we could actually do this to a fellow human being.the words tell the whole story.to bad he didn't come out with a part two of this song on the bravery of the man who was arrested with rueban carter.i think his name was John artis.( Not sure if last name is correct , I can say he just died recently.he is the hero in this story.

Wasn’t really “banned” per say. Columbia came down on Bob and told him to change a line in the song “I was only robbing the bodies” which didn’t actually happen and could’ve resulted in a lawsuit for defamation/libel. Because there was so much microphone leakage in the recording, they couldn’t just overdub the new line in as it would still be audible and would fuck up the rhythm of the track. So Bob re-recorded the song and made it significantly faster as a result. That’s why this take is 2 minutes longer

This one doesn't mention Bello at all, but he was involved. And both he and Bradley testified. The movie was fictionalized in some ways and so is the song. For example, Carter was never the number one contender for the middle weight crown. He was ranked 9th at the time of his arrest and never reached higher than 3rd at any time. That's not really important. Neither is presented as a documentary. They both generally tell the story and thrust of racism and miscarriages of justice.

Yeah the final recording has much more anger and urgency. And the sound like a whiplash is great. The 3 albums 'Blood on the tracks', 'Desire' and 'Street Legal' are high points. Both from a creative standpoint AND Dylan's voice, which is at its best.

I fell in love with the message. Regardless of how it was played. Why have we gotten rid of anybody who cares? I'm not from this era but it seems like nobody has a voice anymore. If you speak about things now you are a conspiracy theorist. We used to call them freedom fighters and activists
@LuxsJr4 жыл бұрын
Conspiracy theorist ? Like Greta Thunberg ? Like Noam Chomsky ? Like Jason Momoa ? That's only three coming to my minds right now but there are still plenty of people fighting and having a voice to protest. Even Bernie Sanders always talks about how the system is corrupted... It's just not that people has no voice. It's just that people stopped listening, to keep their comfort.

Wouldn't hurt to do the research before speaking about stuff... Bob didn't do his, otherwise he wouldn't have written a song for a criminal. I guess that's a good thing in this context, or we wouldn't have had this song today.

@@michaelweber5372 Rubin Carter was convicted twice by 2 different juries and was released on a technicality on his third trial. No judge ever cleared his name with a not guilty verdict, no judge ever ruled that he was framed. The evidence against him was overwhelming in the first place. He would've been retried again after his release, if the prosecutor hadn't decided it's not worth it, because he already served so much time anyway. The man was also a fraud in his auto-biography, completely fabricating lots of details about his life, which can easily can be and have been debunked by people who actually did the research. Speaking of which, here's a bit of trivia for you: the dude wasn't even "he number one contender for the middleweight crown", his career was kind of in shambles at the time of the murders. He had lost 3, drew one and won only one fight of his last 5 fights. You might say he was on a losing streak, well not really, let's look at his last 20 fights: 10 wins, 9 losses, 1 draw. Hardly a boxing superstar, if you ask me. He was a criminal, a murderer who got away with half the punishment he deserved. While you people debate what Dylan meant or did not mean and give all kinds of meanings to his lyrics, the real life story of Rubin Carter is 180 degrees different to what BD makes it be.

Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall She sees the bartender in a pool of blood Cries out, “My God, they killed them all!” Here comes the story of the Hurricane The man the authorities came to blame For something that he never done Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been The champion of the world Three bodies lying there does Patty see And another man named Bello, moving around mysteriously “I didn’t do it,” he says, and he throws up his hands “I was only robbing the register, I hope you understand I saw them leaving,” he says, and he stops “One of us had better call up the cops” And so Patty calls the cops And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flashing In the hot New Jersey night Meanwhile, far away in another part of town Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are driving around Number one contender for the middleweight crown Had no idea what kinda shit was about to go down When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road Just like the time before and the time before that In Paterson that’s just the way things go If you’re black you might as well not show up on the street Unless you want to draw the heat Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowling around He said, “I saw two men running out, they looked like middleweights They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates” And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head Cop said, “Wait a minute, boys, this one’s not dead” So they took him to the infirmary And though this man could hardly see They told him that he could identify the guilty men Four in the morning and they haul Rubin in Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs The wounded man looks up through his one dying eye Says, “Why did you bring him in here for? He ain't the guy!” Yes, here’s the story of the Hurricane The man the authorities came to blame For something that he never done Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been The champion of the world Four months later, the ghettos are in flame Rubin’s in South America, fighting for his name While Arthur Dexter Bradley’s still in the robbery game And the cops are putting the screws to him, looking for somebody to blame “Remember that murder that happened in a bar?” “Remember you said you saw the getaway car?” “You think you’d like to play ball with the law?” “Think it might-a been that fighter that you saw running that night?” “Don’t forget that you are white” Arthur Dexter Bradley said, “I’m really not sure” Cops said, “A poor boy like you could use a break We got you for the motel job and we’re talking to your friend Bello Now you don’t want to have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow You’ll be doing society a favor That sonofabitch is brave and getting braver We want to put his ass in stir We want to pin this triple murder on him He ain’t no Gentleman Jim” Rubin could take a man out with just one punch But he never did like to talk about it all that much "It’s my work," he’d say, "and I do it for pay And when it’s over I’d just as soon go on my way" Up to some paradise Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice And ride a horse along a trail But then they took him to the jailhouse Where they try to turn a man into a mouse All of Rubin’s cards were marked in advance The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance The judge made Rubin’s witnesses drunkards from the slums To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger No one doubted that he pulled the trigger And though they could not produce the gun The D.A. said he was the one who did the deed And the all-white jury agreed Rubin Carter was falsely tried The crime was murder “one,” guess who testified? Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride How can the life of such a man Be in the palm of some fool’s hand? To see him obviously framed Couldn’t help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land Where justice is a game Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell An innocent man in a living hell That’s the story of the Hurricane But it won’t be over till they clear his name And give him back the time he’s done Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been The champion of the world

Well here is a true story that actually happened to me in Naples, Italy of all Places. I was in the Navy and my ship was anchored out a couple of miles off. Well, we would ride liberty boats ashore when we had a pass and had to catch the last boat back to the ship around midnight. Did I mention that this took place around 1976? Well, that is when this takes place. It was my second reenlistment and my first or second cruise to the Med. I was about 30 +/- at the time. Well, after partying in the bars all night, I was on my way back to the fleet landing to catch the boat back to my ship when a street vendor, they were all over the place, caught my eye and I saw a hat with attractive colors. It was a beanie type of weaved hat. So I bought it for a buck or two and plopped it on my head. Continuing on my journey to fleet landing, I was accosted by a black dude. Oh! forgot to mention I am a white dude. Well, The black guy says to me, "WHATl ARE YOU DO{ING with that Hat on your head? What do you mean, I say. He sez, Don;'t You know those colors are the National colors of Africa and you don't have the right to wear them. No, I sez, I just like the colors and the way it looked, so I bought the damn hat. [[trying to make a longer story short now] We were walking while all this was taking place and came to an outdoor cafe with tables on the sidewalk, so we sit down at a small table and discuss, eye ball to eyeball. By this time I am looking at my watch and see I only have about 15 minutes to catch the last boat back to my ship. Being late is called UA and serious stuff in the Navy. Punishment is harsh. Anyway, this Guy was eyeball to eyeball with me at the table, surly and arrogant as hell and I wanted to rip his face off. Oh bloody Hell, I am looking at my watch and seeing the minutes tick away. I certainly did not want to be restricted to the ship for the rest of the Med cruise. Finally, with time getting short, I took hat off and threw it at the dude and said, Here, take the GD hat. Walked away and caught the last boat back to my ship. Oh! on my next Med cruise I wasn't restrained enough ashore and early on in the cruised got myself restricted to the ship for the remainder of the cruise and did not walk on land again until returning to Norfolk, VA. As I said, punishment is harsh in the Navy and the worst punishment is not letting the Sailor off the ship in great liberty ports when you get there, while all your friend are going ashore and partying. I endured that. Believe it or not, I went on to Chief Petty Officer in the Navy. Something all enlisted me strive for if they Stay IN. I retired in 1993. Just the way it was. Thanks for reading. J

Omg how can I not love this? This is the song that hooked me on Dylan when I was in highschool- a major epiphany. Things about this I like: Emmy Lou on harmonies, Bob plays the harmonica riff I adore all throughout it unlike the official release where it comes in at the end. But I gotta say it was providential that the re-record was forced to happen. The radio version was shorter +still over 7 minutes I believe) more passionate and firey with a quicker pace that picks up steam and becomes more frenetic as the story unfolds. This is GOLD though Swingin so thank you. I've always been curious about it.
