Very historic. With Martin Luther King Day coming up, Bob Dylan - Only A Pawn In Their Game (March On Washington 1963), Dylan was only 22, but already important enough they wanted him to appear, he sang a song about the recent killing of civil rights leader Medgar Evers, he sang just a few minutes before King gave his famous I have a dream speech. Very historic video

For another historical performance of a Dylan song, check out Bruce Springsteen singing the Dylan song Chimes of Freedom in East Berlin shortly before the opening of the wall. It’s very emotional. I know it’s not Bob Dylan singing, but Dylan has been known for producing many songs that other singers have covered fantastically.

He wrote, recorded, and released ‘Blood On the Tracks’ album when his marriage broke up. It’s an incredible album which will hit you emotionally after a few listens. It covers all the moods and voices he experienced. “I still believe she was my twin, but I lost the ring.” This song registers rage and disgust, obviously. They’re not all like that. There are tender, beautiful ballads with excellent guitar work, “If You See Her, Say Hello”, blues songs about how miserable he is without her, “Buckets Of Rain”, a semi-biographical masterpiece tracing the history of the relationship, “Tangled Up In Blue”, a powerful third-person piece trying to accept that it can’t work, “A Simple Twist Of Fate”, with a lyric “He woke up; the room was bare. He didn’t see her anywhere, told himself he didn’t care, pushed the window open wide…” and a detailed, rambling Old West short story about a failing boomtown, a bank robbery, the big boss, his wife, his mistress, his murder, the judge, judgement, and resolution, “Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack Of Hearts”. And Many More!… One of my all-time favorite records.

Bob Dylan is a great singer songwriter poet. His music has been recorded by so many artists. Peter, Paul & Mary do a great version of "Blowing In The Wind". The group the Byrds did a few of Bob Dylan's songs such as "Mr. Tambourine Man" & "All I Really Want to Do". Some of Bob Dylan's early hits were "The Times They Are a-Changin'", "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall", "Like a Rolling Stone", "It Ain't Me Babe" etc. Dylan co-founded the supergroup the Traveling Willburys in 1988 with George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison & Tom Petty.

Bob Dylan was almost booed off the stage at the Newport folk festival back in the sixties because he did one set with an acoustic guitar and the next one with an electric guitar which was heresy back then. In response he wrote like a rolling stone to everyone who booed him at the festival.

Having watched interviews that Bob Dylan has done in the past, he will admit himself that some of his greatest songs from the past are things that he is not able to duplicate today. He says he simply can’t do that anymore. “It’s all right Ma I’m only bleeding” was one particular song he pointed out that he no longer has the ability to write like that anymore. His latest song that I heard “murder most foul“ is something you definitely need to hear.

This song is off my favorite Dylan album Blood on the Tracks. Every song on that album is genius. And for the people who are critical of Dylan’s voice, I believe his voice sounded his absolute best on that album. I would even call the production on many of the songs from that album as lush. Lots of people comment on how the Blood on the Tracks songs have a lot to do with the break up from his wife at that time. But another influencing factor was that Dylan had been spending a lot of time with a painter and was inspired by that medium to approach his music differently. I have noticed that you are covering a lot of Dylan’s songs from live versions. He is known for always delivering his songs in different styles. So I would encourage you to go listen to the recorded album versions. Some have very iconic deliveries. I agree that Dylan was very groundbreaking in numerous ways. One thing he did was break from the 3 minute standard song that was recorded for radio broadcasting. It might seem to be a minor thing as far as artistic vision. But breaking that mold was quite significant for musicians.

Bob Dylan & The Band, Buffalo Springfield and The Byrds started the whole electric folk movement in 1964/1965 - Bob Dylan, David Crosby, Neil Young, Stephen Stills. Crosby Stills Nash & Young, and Neil Young & Crazy Horse have huge catalogs of their own with over 100 albums and over 100 hits combined. Young has 41 studio albums alone, not counting his live albums and albums with super groups he belongs to.

The most important thing to understand about this song is that it took place in a dark period of Bob's life. Blood On The Tracks is the album it came from. Dylan's son Jacob said that the album is his parents talking to each other during their divorce. It's about them and the struggle people have to overcome when a divorce happens with kids involved. Oh yea, by the way, Wilburn.... Bob ain't dead you know.... he's still here with us..... still writing songs.....

There's a lot in that song. Most of the anger in it has pretty well got to be aimed at his wife, Sara, after the breakup of their 8-year marriage. They were going through divorce court, fighting over custody of their 5 children, and that's a very tough thing for anyone to go through. And the lawyers don't help.... Bitter stuff at the time, for sure. He also directs some sharp venom at gossip-mongers in the press, spreading all kinds of rumors and false stories about him...that's mostly in the first verse. "Someone's got it in for me. They're planting stories in the press...etc" I think it might be the angriest song he ever wrote. He sure pours out a lot of energy singing it. There are all kinds of amazing poetic images scattered through the verses, and he wraps it up at the end by admitting that it was partly his fault too...and that they both ended up behaving like idiots. A divorce can do that to people. "Idiot Wind! Blowing through the buttons of our coats. Blowing through the letters that we wrote. Idiot Wind! Blowing through the dust upon our shelves. We're idiots, Babe! It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves!" Yes, he was willing to share the blame...

It is important to note that sometimes there is not a deeper meaning to a specific lyric. With Dylan there are just so many references and so much train of thought imagery that while the song may have a larger theme or story it is not really meaningful to disect every single lyric. Often it’s better to just try to discern what the words mean to YOU. Anyway, Idiot Wind is from the album Blood on the Tracks, which many (including me) consider his best album. I love it because, for Dylan, it is unusually intimate and vulnerable.

yeah if you want to really get into Dylan's music listen to all his albums in the order he made them. start with his first album Bob Dylan. then The Freewheeling Bob Dylan, The Times they are a Changing, Another Side of Bob Dylan and so on. Also look on the Bob Dylan KZbin channel. There are a lot of videos on there.

I absolutely LOVE the serious consideration you give Bob Dylan but PLEASE stop using the past tense when you speak of him. Not was a great genius, is a great genius. Dylan is still alive, still touring still writing genius lyrics. He's a LIVING legend.

I agree. If you look at most top 10 lists of his finest albums, you'll see 2 or 3 from the past 20 years. Love & theft, time out of mind, modern times, rough & rowdy ways are among his best

Not one of my favorite Dylan songs. But I like this than the studio version. Bob always changes.
