For whatever reason I broke with precedent and peeked at some Dylan lyric analysis of this song. I again encountered the reflexive compulsion of many people to deconstruct Dylan's songs as puzzles full of hidden or referential meaning. I find reading these interfere with my direct experience of his music so will continue to avoid them. Preserve their ambiguity. Much of what I hear in his music are not Delphic messages but sagacious insights about the human condition, typically expressed through metaphor, allegory and alliterative juxtapositions. He's playing with words. He consistently uses double entendre. Many songs appear to be combinations of personal experiences and things he has read. Some songs have a singular focus, in many he is telling a story. I once worked with a Pepperdine University graduate (Pepperdine is in Malibu, down the road from Dylan's home) who worked while a student for a security company which had been contracted 24/7 to keep the obsessive public from intruding on him. He had no prior knowledge of Dylan's reputation or legacy and just accepted him as a client. Dylan appears to have found this a relief. He was unburdened from having to be Bob Dylan. In the middle of the night Dylan would appear and they spent hours discussing a wide range of topics. I was not surprised to learn there was a large Bible on a pedestal in a room with a large table strewn with books and other literature. So please continue to with no expectations, explore his music, enjoying his harmonica and expressive genius.
