Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Every step of the way we walk the line
Your days are numbered, so are mine
Time is piling’ up, we struggle and we scrape
We’re all boxed in, nowhere to escape
[Verse 2]
City’s just a jungle; more games to play
Trapped in the heart of it, trying' to get away
I was raised in the country, I been working’ in the town
I been in trouble ever since I set my suitcase down
[Verse 3]
Got nothing' for you, I had nothing' before
Don’t even have anything for myself anymore
Sky full of fire, pain pouring’ down
Nothing you can sell me, I’ll see you around
[Verse 4]
All my powers of expression and thoughts so sublime
Could never do you justice in reason or rhyme
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long
[Verse 5]
Well, the devil’s in the alley, mule’s in the stall
Say anything you wanna, I have heard it all
I was thinking’ 'bout the things that Rosie said
I was dreaming I was sleeping' in Rosie’s bed
[Verse 6]
Walking through the leaves, falling from the trees
Feeling like a stranger nobody sees
So many things that we never will undo
I know you’re sorry, I’m sorry too
[Verse 7]
Some people will offer you their hand and some won’t
Last night I knew you, tonight I don’t
I need something strong to distract my mind
I’m gonna look at you ’til my eyes go blind
[Verse 8]
Well I got here following' the southern star
I crossed that river just to be where you are
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long
[Verse 9]
Well my ship’s been split to splinters and it’s sinking' fast
I’m drowning in the poison, got no future, got no past
But my heart is not weary, it’s light and it’s free
I’ve got nothing but affection for all those who’ve sailed with me
[Verse 10]
Everybody moving if they ain’t already there
Everybody got to move somewhere
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow
Things should start to get interesting' right about now
[Verse 11]
My clothes are wet, tight on my skin
Not as tight as the corner that I painted myself in
I know that fortune is waiting’ to be kind
So give me your hand and say you’ll be mine
[Verse 12]
Well, the emptiness is endless, cold as the clay
You can always come back, but you can’t come back all the way
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

"You can always come back, but you can't come back all the way" A pearl of wisdom for those contemplating the mistakes made in their past. Mississippi is probably Dylan's most poignant song about the wasted years, lost love, loneliness and the inevitable path towards the end. Finally in KZbin! Thank you Bob!

This song + Where Are You Tonight + Tangled Up In Blue + It's Alright Ma.. + Carribean Wind + Brownsville Girl etc.. etc.. (Bob entered my world in 1983. All these years later I'm not sure if I am living out parts of his songs or if he has a direct line to my life and is fretting it into his creative magic). What I actually think is that he is super sensitive and highly intelligent. You can't write songs like this without an unparalleled capacity for compassion and insight into the trials of your fellow man.

What is amazing about Dylan is not just the proliferation of material, but how a a song can be very different depending on what version or take you listen to. Self Portrait changes drastically from a disaster to something deeply intruiging in this way. The guy just has levels and levels in him so far beyond almost any other artist. "Mississippi" seems to encapsulate the core of the man''s life, an older man's resignation to the themes found in "Stuck Insde of Mobile". "You can always come back, but you can't come back all the way." What a line. A very great song.

The first time I ever heard this song was when it was covered by Sheryl Crow on her 1998 Globe Sessions album. As a decades long Bobby D listener, I’m ashamed to admit that this is the first time I’m hearing this song sung by him. I never even knew it was written by him. It’s also interesting reading the comments here and learning that he released this album on 9/11/2001 when Sheryl released her album with this song on it a full two years prior. I’m definitely going to have to do a deep dive into the story behind him giving Sheryl first dibs on this song.

What a criminally under-rated song on an album which seemed to slip under the radar due to its release being so close to 9/11. For me, whole album is some of Bob's best work this century as he mastered writing songs that are both archaic sounding at times but always timeless, building on the same technique he utilized with Time Out Of Mind ("I was riding in a buggy with miss Mary Jane"), but was probably enabled by the 2 acoustic cover albums of traditional covers he did prior to that. In that sense, he was looping back all the way to say Blowing In The Wind, Hard Rain, or The Times They Are A-Changing - equally of the moment, but timeless. The man is a genius.

This song is full of nuclear lines. For example: "Everybody movin’ if they ain’t already there. Everybody got to move somewhere". I think he means by this sentence that everybody will end (or being there already) up with JAH or satan. Dylan is a believer who uses many times wordplays alluding to Jesus, satan and himself/humanity. This song echos prominently Dylan's Gotta Serve Somebody. Same message same players.
