Lyrics:
You've got a lotta nerve to say you are my friend
When I was down you just stood there grinnin'
You've got a lotta nerve to say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on the side that's winnin'
You say I let you down, ya know its not like that
If you're so hurt, why then don't you show it?
You say you've lost your faith, but that's not where its at
You have no faith to lose, and ya know it
I know the reason, that you talked behind my back
I used to be among the crowd you're in with
Do you take me for such a fool, to think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide what he don't know to begin with?
You see me on the street, you always act surprised
You say "how are you?", "good luck", but ya don't mean it
When you know as well as me, you'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once and scream it
No, I do not feel that good when I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief perhaps I'd rob them
And tho I know you're dissatisfied with your position and your place
Don't you understand, its not my problem?
I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

Amen! I once knew and trusted a narcissist who screwed me over. We made a promise, or agreement, to each other. He got what he wanted out of the bargain, and when there was no longer any advantage in it for him, he just backed out and left me holding the bag. I confronted him and he simply said, “I’m sorry, there’s nothing I can do.” No remorse, no shame, no conscience. I never trusted him again. Too bad, because he was my brother. I mean, If you can’t trust a family member, who CAN you trust? Really opened my eyes!

bwsmyhero, I am sorry for your pain. (That sounds so cliche and lame.) But I honestly do know of which you speak. Mine is coming at me again, right now. It's beyond exhausting and disheartening. Especially when EVERYONE tells you you're overreacting and he really is a wonderful guy! (If you'd just stfu and bend over further and listen!) I'll stop now, but if you'd care to talk, I'm here. I mean it. Sometimes it helps to understand/realize that you are not wrong and not alone.

Way back in high school my English teacher made us analyze this song, she was a hippie so she was always integrating her music to her lessons. If anything, she taught us one simple thing, anyone can yell, scream and cuss you out. It takes a real genius to use his words and destroy you calmly. This song reminds me so much of her. So glad not to have missed out on her incrdible teaching style.

This song is genius. And risky. One of just a few hit songs that uses this format with no chorus, no bridge, no hook and no instrumental break. The lyrics and the delivery have to be extremely strong to keep people listening to repetitive rhythm and no breaks. He nailed it. Haven't heard anyone else try to sing this. For him it's personal and no one would deliver it any better. Brilliant!

Well Arthur, great to read your comment and no mistake. Here's mine….mid 60's i'm at high school, i'm sitting in a cafe in Cowdenbeath high street. ( I have no doubt you will find out where that is, kudos if you do!) An older guy than me comes in, buys a coke, goes over to the juke box. Puts in his money, turns round and rests against the juke box. For some reason i thought that guy was cool, seconds later it was verified….he was cool. This was the song he paid money to hear. This was the first time i ever heard Bob. I'm in my 70’s now….would you consider me cool or just a dopy old guy?

This is literally my anthem for life. Most people "pretend" to be your friends. At the end of the day, they don't care about anyone but themselves. One day, they are your friend and the next, they don't know you. It is the most heartbreaking thing to experience. I have always wanted to have friends but I have always been socially awkward. Of all the songs Dylan has written this one stands apart, and becomes more relevant with every year that passes. This speaks the plain truth no longer to just an individual but to the hypocrisy of the society in which we live. How many people today claim to have lost faith that they never had in the first place? And how many "just want to be on the side that's winning"?

This is the perfect description of what it's like to deal with someone who has a narcissistic style of relating to people. Every verse describes how such people operate. Two primary motivations: cover up their deep, deep shame using charm and the appearance of human emotions they can't express with any depth: "You say I let you down/ You know it’s not like that/ If you’re so hurt/ Why then don’t you show it?" And they need supply of emotions or admiration to cover up their discomfort or emptiness they feel. It must come to be almost a feeling of panic, I'd guess, as they don't have other coping strategies other than to provoke conflict and cover up the negative to gain the admiration of acquaintances who haven't gotten close enough to experience the rage. Put, "You got a lot of nerve/ To say you are my friend/ When I was down/ You just stood there grinning" together with, "You got a lot of nerve/ To say you got a helping hand to lend/ You just want to be on/ The side that’s winning" ...I may be going through triggering events in my own life, huh? Cheers and Happy Birthday to Bob Dylan this week!

My late mom had this on a single when I was pre-school age. Something happened to it. Then about 1974, heard it on my dad's car radio. I recognized it even though it was 7 years later. But I wanted the record. My mom didn't know the correct title. Tried to order it from a record store, but no title. Then finally, in 1982 I got the greatest hits album. The song was on it!!!!

Without a doubt, one of and probably the best lyricists Ever. ob Dylan is extraordinarily brilliant. Love his work since about 1994.

There is so much hurt and anger in this song. Only Bob could turn it into such a beautiful song. I loved this when I was at school and I love it now, keep on rocking Bob. Love you xxx

My younger son and I were driving in LA one day and Bob’s image was plastered across all these placards and I chuckled. And my son goes, “What? Who is that?!” And I suddenly realized I hadn’t properly educated him on who Dylan was.

@@colettegabbidon13 Kooper was actually supposed to play rhythm guitar on these sessions (at CBS from mmemory), but it was a bit redundant, so he took it upon himself to jump on the organ. He's just playing strait major chords bc he didn't know the songs and was just following Dylan. Notice how he comes in slightly after the start of each bar. You notice it more on Like A Rolling STone, but a great piece of jamming that created a really fresh sound.
