This wonderful performance from July 1973 appears on the Live at the Keystone albums, but with one big difference. This one does not have the David Grisman mandolin overdub. While I love David's work, Jerry's "hidden" guitar work on Positively 4th Street is too gorgeous to not share. Check it out. You'll love it, I'm sure.

Jerry is so comfortable & natural with this tune you could easily think it was his own. Shout out for John Kahn on bass. I saw them at Bottom Line NYC a number of times during this era, & they did this often. Another shout out for Merl Saunders. RIP all

Agreed, beautiful version of this Dylan song. I’m reading Steve Parish’s book now which details a lot of his decline- it’s really sad how hard drugs destroyed such a brilliant artist like Jerry, especially the heroin. It made him withdrawn and slowly curtailed his creativity and joy
@merk9569
@merk9569 Жыл бұрын
@@davids6652. Hard drugs have destroyed the living of so many lives- and taken so many more in needless death. I’m revisiting this period and meeting some artists for the first time, Jerry Garcia included. Sadly, despite the advances that were being made in medicine, so much about the human body and brain were unknown. Stress was not known to be a deterrent on health until the 80’s! For all the appearance of having a free wheeling lifestyle, these artists were under a lot of stress. Just getting from place to place to perform was hard and life on the road even harder. Buses and small aircraft. Limited sleeping and eating options. Poor means of communication- keeping in touch with family, friends and business associates was done on pay phones! If someone had a health issue, it further complicated matters. It’s amazing that anyone could produce under the circumstances. Yet, I personally feel we were blessed with the richest period of contemporary music during the 1960s and 1970s. Although the two decades of alternative rock from 1990 to 2010 kept me so distracted that I didn’t listen to the masters for far too long!

Yea true..Jerry smoked dope at least he didn't shoot it lol. He died of a heart attack related to his other issues like diabetes, tour rot, not having his drugs too. Those are the worst days that make you feel useless but Jerry probably didn't have a typical deepest seated addiction, he was successful, always artistic, started out awesome on his voyage into guitar. Wrote parts of the dead catalog, the best even. So I guess he got a hall pass as BK put in his book

This is from July 10, 1973. I highly recommend getting a hold of Garcia & Saunders's "The Keystone Complete" It contains everything played on July 10 & 11, 1973. One caveat, though, the "Keystone Complete" only contains the Grisman overdub of Positively 4th Street. I love both versions, but Jerry's subtle work is wonderful and should be in everyone's collection.
