Just arrived here from the coast...thoughtful analysis.

I love the version that appears on the bootleg series 16. They remixed that version for an EP which is also pretty cool.

love the slowed, slightly stoned tone of that one

Great commentary. I have always been of the mindset that Dylan’s characters in his songs are all versions of himself. It is hard for me to not see Jokerman as Dylan confronting his own alter ego again just as he did with the Thief and the Joker in All Along The Watchtower and every other song off John Wesley Harding. Infidels was the first Dylan album that I got to hear a bootleg version of prior to the official release. It includes many of the songs the official release did not as well as alternate cuts of the songs that were released. All without the 80’s production sheen that still hurts my ears. Jokerman blew me away on that bootleg and still does today with or without the sheen.

well said i dig the 80s production on a lot of of these tracks-it’s the tracks themselves that i have more trouble with. more great songs were left off infidels than were included

I'd say that the Christian "influence" was always there in Dylan's work, right from the start of his career...but it became overt in 1979-81 with his "born again" phase. I've always loved the 3rd "religious" album, "Shot of Love". I know it wasn't generally well received, but I thought it was great. As for "Jokerman", I consider that to be among his greatest songs. Dylan writes in universal terms. His lyrics (frequently) don't touch on a single subject, they touch on everything. This is very evident in a song like Jokerman, which ends up being about every single thing anyone thinks it's about, and probably some other things as well.

Dylan changes his ethos more frequently than his underpants. Love the channel, love the song. Love tricksters wherever they may roam. Just read "The Mysterious Stranger" by Twain. Mr. Punch anyone? Lord of Misrule. Eṣu Elegbara from the Yoruba pantheon. An old scamp in a story by Anatole France. . . . Starts with P.

Good critique. But please don't critique Hip to be Square ... would remind me too much of the scene from American Psycho.
