Yes, the music is very feeble, and it very boomerish, but thats why its good. Its called rough and rowdy ways, almost poking fun at old age. Bobby is very aware of his old age and makes music from the perspective of an old grandpa. Talking about Kennedy for 16 minutes, surely youve had conversations like that with your grandpa. He brings up the rolling stones at least 10 times (as my grandpa does). Its a very real and honest record, and i believe it is one of his best.

As any Dylan fan understands there is a wide range of folks sitting under the umbrella "Dylan fan". Some people enjoy different eras more than others and since Dylan has such a varied catalogue you could get 100 people in a room to debate this album and end without a clear consensus. Those who like it will like it and those who don't won't, but I think all Dylan fans can agree on that we are glad to see an album with new original material after waiting for such a long time. I just hope Dylan keeps making more new and original material, because anything is better silence.

spookyTwigg why not? Can’t the music just be a vessel or a mood to compliment the lyrics? If you’re talking actually musically interesting compositions this disqualifies most popular music. Music with lyrics is in the literarily tradition it’s pretty uncommon to have really sonically or compositionally interesting pop music and those who do that often expense the lyrics because interesting music compromises song structure
@spookyTwigg4 жыл бұрын
@@toomuchsparetimeproduction7281 it can be a vessel for the mood yeah, but this vessel makes the mood sound boring which isn't what the lyrics deserve. He makes the music he wants to make without compromise, and that in itself is so rare and commendable.

what about Empire Burlesque? I feel like many of the artists that came up in the 60's went a bit lost in the 80's and tried more commercial production, like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie… even if you could argue all of them did it in their way

@@RayasNegroOvejas Yeah, the introduction of new technology in the 80's music production, must have felt for them that they had to adapt or else they were going to be forgotten. I think it was sort of a "panic" choice, and in the 90's once the novelty started to wear off, and people started to reevaluate the more organic aspects of music production of 60's and early 70's, these artist began to feel more at ease and reassured with the music they were known for, and thankfully this mindset has stayed the same until today, wich is a very good thing, now there's space for all aproeaches to music and you can judge it at it's own merits.

Yeah I think Anthony was hoping for more Indiana Jones and less Anne Frank. Personally I like both

Its not meant to be inventive. Its not meant to be a late-career rediscovery or anything of the sort. The man has been saddled with the expectations his entire career. For what this record tries to do, which is nothing lofty, it does it perfectly.

If you thought he was going to praise this when he never even bothered to review Tempest, was “meh” on MMF, and generally seems to come around to older singer songwriter albums prettylate... ...da fug???

Honestly, despite this album's shortcomings, just getting to still talk about this fucking legend in 2020 is amazing to me. And yes while people like David Bowie made truly great work at the end of his lifetime, I think Bob has earned the right to make whatever he makes him content. That album cover is pretty bad though. Maybe a classics week episode on Blonde On Blonde in the future ?

Like Yeats, Bob Dylan used to be able to create awe inspiring images with words. 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue', 'Visions of Johanna', 'Tambourine Man', 'Farewell Angelina', 'When I Paint My Masterpiece', 'Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands' etc. created dreamlike visions which somehow fit together. And like great poetry, the reader/listener could make 'sense' of it in his own way, no matter what the artist may have had in mind. I don't feel that way about this album - and actually about many previous ones. But things change, and I'm sure he doesn't care what any of us think. At least he has the guts to 'keep on keeping on.'

Love and Theft is a brilliant album as is Tempest. Rough and Rowdy Ways is also a great album, it is better than a 5, it’s an 8 for me. The thing I enjoy about Bob is he writes and records songs to accommodate his vocal changes over the years. He’s not in is 20’s and it’s not the 60’s, “Murder Most Foul” isn’t about JFK’s assassination specifically and it’s more aos an oratorio than a song.

I’ve made up my mind to give myself to you isn’t about love, it’s about a Dylan at the end of his life/career accepting his mortality/giving himself to Death. I feel like u intentionally misinterpreted a lot of these lyrics so u could trash the subdued instrumentals and give it a 5

Gotta say, one of the big reasons I don't really watch Fantano is he is totally incapable of looking at any work as being a part of an artists whole career, or even in relation to their other recent albums. Obvs this isn't the best Bob Dylan album to start with, but looking at it as a part of a career such as his makes it fascinating.

he almost always takes the artist's greater context into his reviews tho. the first few minutes of this are him talking about how Dylan is older now and is taking more liberties with his music and being indulgent.

You're pretty unfair on the cover here man, yeah it's kinda lame but you tear into it without much good reason. When you critiqued Father of All's artwork it was in the context of hoping it ironic in the midst of the terrible music it represented. I know it's ya opinion but I think it may have been a little bitter on this one 🤷♀️ P.S. I did love the Cal-cameo, good to know he's staying safe
