This is the second Dylan reaction vid of yours that I've watched, the 1st being "It's all right Ma (I'm only Bleeding). In both you said, "This may be one of my Favorite Dylan songs", well, keep listening to Bob, and you'll find yourself saying that quite a lot, and meaning it every time.

Or an emperor with no clothes. Yes he wrote some great songs, but not that many when you think about it, and there are a lot of great songwriters who are better than he is. I think he said himself and not so many words, that his lyrics are kind of just nonsense. There is a place and a Time where beautiful people like Bob Dylan appear and are relevant, but then there are truly thoughtful and timeless lyrics that come from other people that are better I believe. That's just my opinion, shoot me.

That entire album is amazing, perfectly tuned guitars add to the beauty of it. I've been listening to music since the late '60s and "Blood on the Tracks" is my #1 favorite album. Every song is perfect, and yet the live versions are even better. Definitely listen to this song on "Hard Rain", listen to how he tweaks some of the words such as 'non-eventful morn' become 'uneventful morn'. It's a slight difference but it's there, same goes for 'Idiot Wind'. I suspect Bob gets the basic concept first then finds the rhymes before creatively coming up with the verses. Yes he's released his earlier take 'Up to Me' on his "Bootleg Series Vol. 1-3" and it's good but not as good as the final version. He recorded the album in NYC but after returning home he decided to re-record a few of the songs, I think for the better, I've got the illegal bootleg.

Great choice, Ewan, you can’t go wrong with Dylan! The only problem is picking a song to review by an artist who has written over 500 of them. A great Dylan classic you’ll love is “Positively 4th Street” , one of his best known songs that was also recorded by many other artists. It came out in September 1965 as a single, it was supposed to be on his album “Highway 61 Revisited” which came out the month before, but there wasn’t enough room to fit it on the LP. It’s a unique song because the music has a happy feel to it, while the lyrics are full of anger directed at one or more persons who treated him badly.

This song was featured in an episode of Mad Men. Bob Dylan was totally confident from the moment he broke out. He knew he was a genius from the get go. He helped Jimi Hendrix to be comfortable with a less than ideal singing voice.

As a "baby boomer" (I'm 72 now) it's great to see young folk experiencing music like this. I was 12 when I first heard Dylan. First saw him when I was 15, with the Hawks ( Later the Band) on his 1966 world tour. Half acoustic to appease the "Folkies" half electric. I had just bought Highway 61 album. ( after buying Bringing it All Back Home) So we got to see him play Ballad of a Thin Man, Desolation Row, Highway 61, Like a Rolling Stone etc. We also heard Visions of Johanna, which no one had heard as it was on the as yet unreleased Blonde on Blonde. He played it acoustic. No booing as they thought it was a new " folk" song. There's a great film clip of him playing it acoustically in the UK in 66.

I'm in total agreement with you. This is one of my favorites from Blood on the Tracks. Second only to You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go. His lyrics, as always, are brilliant. His ability to rhyme is second to none. "Old men STRANDED without love" What a word choice! I'm not a man, but I am old, and I can vouch for the feeling of being stranded. How did he know that when he was so young? He has the ability to use simple words to express the deepest truths of the human condition. Tangled up in Blue is considered one of, if not THE best of his songs. I don't agree. In fact I don't really care that much for it. It's good; there isn't a bad song on this album. A couple of other songs that I think are really special are Idiot Wind and Simple Twist of Fate. It was fun to watch you get excited over Shelter from the Storm.

A beautiful song Bob wrote about his wife, Sara. They married in 1966 at the height of his early fame, and were together for the next 8 years, and had 4 children during that time. When Bob wrote "Shelter From the Storm" in 1974 the marriage was beginning to fall apart for various reasons. Most of the album "Blood on the Tracks" is about the collapse of that marriage, so it's full of affection, pain, regret, loss, and at one point white-hot anger (in the song "Idiot Wind"). It's a stunning album. One of Bob's absolute best. He played most of the songs in an alternate tuning on the acoustic guitar, and that gives it a special sound.

This is my tribute to Bob Dylan: Song: A Master of the Blues It was another country. It was another place. But the songs he sang were relevant, to the whole damn human race. His name was Bob Dylan. A master of the blues. You know just what he's feelin' by the way he sings for you. His name was Bob Dylan. A poet of his age. He sung of rank corruption in tears of blinding rage. It was in another country. In a different world. The knot of fear and hatred, he loosened and uncurled. He fought a thwarted justice, that something must be done. He warned us of the price we'd pay, and the things that were to come. It was a different country. It was another land. But he made us see, possibilities, that we could understand. He knew all the elements that would conspire: the lusting heat of cold desire, the wind, the rain, the creeping fire, the child within the man. A vision sought is a vision gained, he saw it all and he explained, and through it, with him, we were sustained. We went on as he began. It was another country. In a different hemisphere. And in speaking truth to restless youth Bob Dylan had no peer. It was a dream, or so it seemed, but they were the golden years. Among the young, he spoke their tongue, as a prophet or a seer. His name was Bob Dylan. A master of disguise. He'd see right through the hurt in you to the pain sunk in your eyes. His name was Bob Dylan, and it comes as no surprise, he struck a note in what he wrote: how love both lives and dies. It was another country. It was a different time. He gave us goals and set our sights on mountains left to climb. His name was Bob Dylan. He was honest if not wise. And the cards you knew he was dealin' you were not a pack of lies. Through every moment his songs require an open mind and trust inspired to raise us up from within the mire that we call: existence. A vision sought is a vision gained, he saw it all and he explained, and though it left him tired and drained, he went on with quiet persistence. It was a different country; in another past. He found the evidence of my deceit bound down within my heart. It was another lifetime. If its' vision did not last who could blame that passionate flame, illuminating art? His name was Bob Dylan. He blew a funeral horn. And heralded the winds of change from within the social storm. His name is still Bob Dylan. He's a master of the blues. And you know just what he's feelin' by the way he sings to you. DSW ©David Smith-White 2021

Another from this album that's up there is "Idiot Wind". "Blood on the Tracks" as an album was said to be about the break-up of his first marriage, and was his most successful album in years and is regarded as one of his best. Dylan commented, while denying it was about his marriage breaking up, "A lot of people tell me they enjoy that album. It's hard for me to relate to that. I mean ... people enjoying that type of pain, you know?"

If you check out Idiot Wind, as many have suggested here in the comments, be sure to listen to the one that says 1974 NYC session, after you’ve listened to the album version. It’s a more stripped down arrangement from earlier in the sessions that totally blows the album version away, in my opinion. Far more guy-wrenching, and just captures the essence of the lyrics better. I’ll try posting a link to it, but I don’t know if it will work. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3Ovh5yDgdymZ5I

It’s so funny watching younger people discover Dylan and say that his voice is good, because all I ever heard from people was that, yeah, he writes good lyrics, but his voice is terrible. I’m glad people are coming around to appreciate this music.
