"Her fog, her amphetamine, and her pearls..." With three nouns, in "Just Like a Woman" (said to have been inspired by her), Bob Dylan deftly summed up his friend Edie Sedgwick, the wayward princess of Andy Warhol's multimedia Factory

This was OK until the end. Defining Sedgwick as a groupie is just wrong. She was a star in her own right, however short lived. Bummer that the person who made this would demean her like that.

She was so beautiful and hugely damaged before she hit the factory. But it was her misfortune to go from one abuser to another she didn’t stand a chance. I think she would be thrilled she’s still being watched discussed and loved all these years later. RIP darling Edie❤️

@cactaceous
@cactaceous 2 жыл бұрын
Yup. Dylan asked if he was going to be paid for the screen test very well knowing Warhol never paid any performer for anything, one thing he always told Sedgwick about, that he used people for his own benefit only. When Warhol shrugged, Dylan said he was going to take a painting, chose one of the Elvis ones and just walked out with it. Warhol filmed Dylan and his crew leaving with the painting and attaching it to the roof of the car they drove in with. You can see footage and pictures online if you search for them.

I read the song "Let It Loose" by The Rolling Stones was inspired by Keith & Mick's perspectives of a love affair going South. Possibly the Brian Jones/Keith Richards/Anita Pallenberg love triangle. I also read about a strange love triangle involving some members of the band "The Band" (Great band btw- I'd love to see a video about them). There's also the well documented affairs in Fleetwood Mac that inspired the album Rumours, but there's tons of videos about that already. Seems love and loss provide some of the best material for songwriters.

2:55 That's John Cale of The Velvet Underground in that picture with Sedgwick. Not Bobby Neuwirth. Also Sedgwick was never paid for starring in any of the Warhol films and never earned a cent after release. Reason why Dylan kept on her about Warhol being a vampire that was draining her and using her.

I don't have any more inside knowledge than the next guy, but I would venture or guess to say that "Like a Rolling Stone" was inspired by Edie as well as the "Blonde on Blonde" record. Warhol was disposable with most of his entourage and was a selfish piece of shit. The fact that Dylan threatened to sue is probably indicative of the truth that they were involved. What did they call him in the film? "Billy Quinn"? He probably felt something for someone who was broken and he couldn't help and that book stirred up bad memories.

Blood on the Tracks is about his marriage ending due to tension & fighting from the Fame & infidelity. His son Jakob had mentioned that it's essentially his parents fighting back and fourth the entire album. Edie didn't ruin the relationship, he was screwing around without Sara's knowledge for so long. What ended things was one of his groupies had breakfast with her children. That was when she filed for divorce.

I read in one of the many Dylan biographies that Bob didn't even like Warhol's Elvis picture, he just wanted Warhol (who was notoriously cheap) to give it to him in order to brag about the incident. He gave the painting to his agent Albert Grossman who sold it for $300,000. Gene Simmons wrote a song called Plaster Casters about two groupies who made plaster casts of rock and roller's dicks.

I feel Like a Rolling Stone is undoubtedly about her, the other tracks could quit possibly be He’s not particularly kind or sympathetic to her in Rolling Stone. I love all the tracks but he tends to paint himself as the innocent bystander or victim most of the time. There seems to be the odd wry comment about himself but I find the tone of the songs to be way more critical of the muse/object of desire I find it hypocritical. He allegedly used Edie as a mistress, she was initially unaware that he had actually married Sarah while secretly seeing Edie on the side. Pretty callous if that’s true

Sedgwick was mentally damaged from the start and all the drugs she got exposed to at The Factory (and her smoking - listen to her cough in Ciao Manhattan) had her on a fast track to an early grave. She had an entry into a career with Vogue/modeling but the negative gossip about her drug use scared the modeling agencies off. She really couldn't act or sing so at that point she had no viable source of income and she just slipped further and further into drugs and mental illness. Also - not a groupie.

I remember those times, and characters, in the 60's with fondness. Now we have mass shootings, homeless people all over, and unhappy unwelcome migrants.

A bit before my time (born 65) but I remember 70s and 80s. It's like we are living on a whole other planet now. I romanticize the 60s and 70s time period Wish things were like that again in so many ways.

You missed the most important fact. She was 28, just like everyone else.

@Van Inhalin If you're referring to people like Brian Jones and Janice Joplin they were 27 not 28 when they died.

Either way. It's close enough to 27. That really is a cursed age if you are inclined to issues. I know I was reviewing my life and what all I hadn't achieved yet. It's really an emotional age. That and turning 30 is traumatic for some. Was 4 me. Now I'd kill to be that age again (of course with the wisdom I attained from life and experience - a do-over. )
