I left my family of brother, sister and mum in Norway at 17 to come back to England to my father in 1991. He died suddenly 3 years later aged 48. He was a huge Dylan fan and I knew nothing of Dylan. One thing my dad used to say to me when we parted ways was "I'll see you in the sky above, in the tall grass, in the ones I love" and I never really thought much of it other than it was a nice quirky way of saying goodbye. A week or so after he died I listened to some of his CDs and knowing he loved Dylan I decided to listen to the entire album this song came from. When I heard that line that he had said so much my heart leapt and I felt such joy - remember, I had never heard it before, only from him. And then I heard the complete line for the first time "...You're gonna make me lonesome when you go" and I burst into tears with a tremendous feeling of love.

As an Englishman the sounds of crickets and - far better still - the sight and sound of the the sport that is cricket is joyous. Leather on willow is the sound of summer to me. Indeed, even as I type this I can almost smell it, so resonant it remains from my childhood when opening for my school team. Oh yeah, along with The Beatles and The Kinks, Dylan is top of the tree pour moi. I was born in the '60s but raised on '70s music. The mid to late '60s were the very best.

Bob Dylan made me cry twice. Once at 'The Fleadh' in London's Finsbury Park, when he played Tangled Up In Blue, and another time at Portsmouth Guildhall, when he played It Ain't Me Babe - a song that wasn't even one of my favourites (but judging by the amount of other people in tears at the same moment, he must have hit the song's sweet spot that night). I've seen Dylan dozens of times, in several countries, and I've never heard him perform "Lonesome", but one thing's for sure - if I ever do see him play that song I'll be bawling my eyes out like a child that's lost his favourite toy, his pet dog, and his mother...all on the same day.

Dragon clouds so high above I've only known careless love It's always hit me from below This time around it's more correct Right on target so direct Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go. Purple clover Queen Anne lace Crimson hair across your face You could make me cry if you don't know Can't remember what I was thinking of You might be spoiling me too much love Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go. Flowers on the hillside blooming crazy Crickets talking back and forth in rhyme Blue river running slow and lazy I could stay with you forever And never realize the time. Situations have ended sad Relationship have all been bad Mine've been like Verlaine's and Rimbaud But there's no way I can compare All those scenes to this affair Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go. Yer gonna make me wonder what I'm doing Staying far behind without you Yer gonna make me wonder what I'm saying Yer gonna make me give myself a good talking to. I'll look for you in old Honolulu San Francisco, Ashtabula Yer gonna have to leave me now I know But I'll see you in the sky above In the tall grass in the ones I love Yer gonna make me lonesome when you go.

I still am in love with you Bob, after all the years, now 80 and still ♥ you and your miraculous lyrics and voice. You're Goin To Make Me Lonesome When You Go makes me have many bittersweet memories of those I have loved.

I've seen love go by my door It's never been this close before Never been so easy or so slow I've been shooting in the dark too long When somethin's not right it's wrong You're gonna make me lonesome when you go Dragon clouds so high above I've only known careless love It always has hit me from below But this time around it's more correct Right on target, so direct You're gonna make me lonesome when you go Purple clover, Queen Anne lace Crimson hair across your face You could make me cry if you don't know Can't remember what I was thinkin' of You might be spoilin' me too much, love You're gonna make me lonesome when you go Flowers on the hillside, bloomin' crazy Crickets talkin' back and forth in rhyme Blue river runnin' slow and lazy I could stay with you forever And never realize the time Situations have ended sad Relationships have all been bad Mine have been like Verlaine's and Rimbaud But there's no way I can compare All them scenes to this affair You're gonna make me lonesome when you go You're gonna make me wonder what I'm doin' Stayin' far behind without you You're gonna make me wonder what I'm sayin' You're gonna make me give myself a good talkin' to I'll look for you in old Honolul-a San Francisco, Ashtabula You're gonna have to leave me now, I know But I'll see you in the sky above In the tall grass, in the ones I love You're gonna make me lonesome when you go

A few years ago my gf at the times mom adopted an elderly dog who only had a few months to live. It was clear he was abused, he had scars all over him and was very stand offish and affraid of everything. He didnt trust anyone, slept all the time and wouldnt let anyone touch him. She took him to the vet and found he wasnt as old as they thought, he was just sad. He slept by himself on the couch downstairs and was always alone. My gf and I moved in with her mom 3 weeks after she got him and he immediately took a liking to me for some reason. Shortly after moving in we got Covid and I was forced to sleep downstairs in a recliner. He came to sleep with me and the whole time NEVER left my side, not even to eat. We began to bond and I fell in love with him. He was the kindest, sweetest, funniest dog I've ever met. He began to liven up, let me pet him and he figured out he loved to snuggle. We both did actually. He was always by my side and followed me everywhere. When it was time to move out my gf's mom said "you know you have to take him right?" which I didnt even know was a question as I made sure the apt we found took dogs cuz I now had one. The 6 months he was supposed to live turned into 6 years. I dont have litterally any friends or children and my gf and I broke up but I was never alone and always felt loved. Really, it's the only time in my life I felt loved. He was literally my best friend and the most meaningful relationship I've ever had. I love that dog with every inch of my heart and never took a minute we had together for granted....He died 2 months ago yesterday and my heart is shattered. He was more than a dog he was my best friend and I miss him more than I ever thought possible. Now I'm all alone except for a box of ashes. This song reminds me how it felt when he was here, a feeling I never want to forget. I pray to God I'll see him again one day and will miss my little buddy every second until then.
