I love it when people discover what us 'matured generation' had to do with the products available. There were so few products made for the specific uses we're now used to (like highlighters, gel liners, contours, etc) that we had to improvise. If you wanted to prime beforehand you used cheap moisturiser. Eyeliner pencils were used for brows and lips (plus any 'graphic art'). Eye shadows gave us lips that weren't just boring flat colours but now had definition or sparkle - they were also used to contour, bronze, blush and highlight because such things were either unavailable or we didn't have the money to shop at the places they were (luxury brands were the makeup 'innovators' back then). Bronzers were available but I can't remember anyone having one that wasn't just a larger pan in the eyeshadow palette. I remember doing a full face with a powder compact and a black kohl eyeliner. Finished off with Elnett hairspray as a fixing spray. The mid-90s were great. 😂

Basically, back in the day there was a very limited amount of makeup products available so we had to make do with what we had - wax lipstick, pencil eyeliner and eyeshadow palettes (that had bigger shadow pans for blush and bronze, that were really just pink and brown eyeshadow) to do all the work that about 25 different products do nowadays.

Hell, I'm in my mid 30s and I remember doing some of these tricks when I was in high school! So that was early-mid 00s, we were definitely still lacking in the makeup product department. Unless you had the money for MAC, which I absolutely did not have until I was in my 20s. MAC was pretty much the only option for "fancy" makeup at the time. One other thing I remember doing was using brown eyeshadow as bronzer, sparkly bronzer was in at the time so I would use a shimmer shadow. Honestly I'm amazed at the sheer variety of products you can get just at the drugstore now, without even stepping foot into a specialized makeup store - kids today don't even know 😅

girl the gold was supposed to be overlined so when you put your lip liner on there would be a gold color to highlight it, i do that quite a bit with my drawings especially if they are of black characters of mine since logically someone who is darker is going to have more highlights on their face than someone whos lighter since darker skin is more susceptible to picking up light (the opposite is also true)

The eyeshadow on the lip helps the cream lipstick to stay in place, so that you have to reapply less frequently. We used to do this before Max Factor's stay-all-day line really became a thing. Hope this helps💜💜💜
