I had the Widow Maker at the age of 49. I, too, was really fit when I had it. Spent 5 days in ICU. Every doctor and nurse that came in my room told me that I should have died and that it was because I was in such good shape that I survived. I would just say "Nope. It just wasn't my time." We are all born with an expiration date and none of us knows when ours is. Once your time is up, all of the exercise and healthy eating in the world isn't going to stop it. You just have to accept that none of us are guaranteed a tomorrow and make each day count. Nearly dying really makes you appreciate the blessings in your life. When I was in the ER knowing that I could die, I remember not ever being afraid. What worried me was thinking about my sons, who were just 15 and 6 at the time, and I was so sad at the thought of not being there to see them grow up. Now, I thank God for every day I am here with them.

You don't have to be vegan to be healthy. My Grandparents ate meat all the time and greasy crap. Brought me back again and put me on a Lucas device for the 25 minute ambulance ride to a larger hospital. Got 3 stints. Flown to level 1 trauma hospital and was unconscious for 7 days. Dr told my wife it was 50/50 if I ever wake up. Woke up on day 7 to every Dr’s surprise. No brain damage but definitely some memory loss. Bob mentioned one thing in the interview that is the most important, "cholesterol." Bob was a plant based eater for a time a number of years ago, then went back to eating meat, dairy and eggs. Genetics did not give him the life-threatening condition of Atherosclerosis that almost killed him, his diet choices did. This really goes to show you that exercise alone is not enough. Not even the amount of intense exercise Bob did daily and/or weekly was enough. The diet still remains the highest determining factor for avoiding almost all causes of mortality. To anyone reading this.. go plant based. Stay plant based.

Had the widowmaker as well right after a large group bike ride- fairly active person at 47. End spot was at a lake where there is very little cell service. 45 minutes after the ride I’m dead but due to the grace of God, He put 3 people there (fellow riders). ER Dr, 25 year field EMT and the one who started CPR- an off duty police officer who brought me back and kept me pumping. Ambulance had a detour. A Sheriff’s deputy showed up who happened to have a personal AED he won in a contest. Anyway, the park now has 5, county has 6 on patrol at all times and other places have them now too. Lot of good things came from this.

I looked at his Wiki page. Apparently he had dabbled with vegetarianism and even veganism before going back to meat in the years leading up to the heart attack. He probably practiced a USDA recommended low fat diet full of fresh fruits, vegetables legumes, lean meats, and low saturated fat (by historical standards - pre 1977). He had probably been insulin resistant/prediabetic most of his adult life. The vegetarian and vegan diets would likely have accelerated the problem. The science knows what really happened. Most of it is diet. The biggest thing that has helped my cholesterol and triglycerides drop significantly over the past 2 years is giving up pork. Sausage, bacon, pork chops, ribs, ham, barbecue pork. Yep, I've given those things up and have done so for over 2 and half years. It's been hard but I'm not starving. Take fish oil every day and now on a good multivitamin. Don't smoke or drink. Next I'm gonna try to give up sweets. Except fruit. Now I normally have fruit for breakfast and that's pretty much it. The way it keeps going I'm moving pretty much to fruits and vegetables with some baked chicken here and there. That's basically it.

I am glad that he recovered from this life changing event. No offense to anyone in the comments , but other things can cause heart attacks and cardiac arrest. It doesn't matter what you eat, if it is genetic or inherited some of those diseases can not be cured by special diet or exercise, I know this from experience at 30 years old when I experienced a sinus tachycardia and I was fasting and i always exercised, ate fruits and vegatables didnt smoke or anything and boom I didnt know what was happening to me. I just remember seeing all black and scared for my daughter who was 8 at the time, other things can cause heart palpitations or heart attacks,strokes and dizziness. Dieting and eating plant base food is not keeping some people safe you can believe the hype and follow the trend all you want, not saying dont eat healthy or exercise I'm just saying know your family history and consult with your physician before you attempt to excercise or change your diet . Just because it works for some people it doesnt work for all and not everyone can do what others do based on their health conditions. If you never experienced it then please keep your mouth closed and comments to yourself because some of the comments and telling people what to eat is not the answer. Please keep in mind your teeth can cause an heart attack, thyroid issues,lipoprotein a , protein s deficiency, rare genetic heart conditions such cor triatriatum, and many other conditions. +Banyo Your kidding right? Ever heard of 2nd opinions? Ever heard of doctors telling you BS that turns out to be completely bad for your health. I actually do my health research online before I go into the Doctors so I can make sure the dude knows what he is talking about. If he prescribes me a medication that has a million side effects, and I can get healthy naturally, I am going to go naturally. Doctors don't know everything, not even close.
@Banyo__6 жыл бұрын
Not kidding at all. I suggested that Bob went to his own personal real doctors who know his medical history, not you or others who are on the web and know nothing about him. No problems with second opinions from as many doctors or professionals as one wants or doing your own research if you are trying to diagnose yourself...but as we all know, the internet tells everyone they have cancer...so just assuming because you can click on a few websites you 100% know more than a doctor...does not make one more knowledgeable. You do what is right for you personally.
@TrustNJesusChrist6 жыл бұрын
+Banyo Actually there is ways to tell if someone is doing something right or wrong by their health. You use simply use Biological facts. Fact is, a person doesn't just get heart attack out of the blue, nor can you say it was his genetics. Bob clearly had exercise down, but he HAD TO HAVE messed up his heart by eating badly. Your bad genes cannot be the sole reason, its just not medically possible with all the exercise he has done. Nutrition however is another story. There is countless stories of people completely and utterly destroying disease doctors thought were not curable. I am not even going to go into fcking cancer (just know the cancer centers always get their pay). I am not saying not to go to the doctor, but i have learned far more doing my own research on foods and natural cures, than sitting listening to a doctor which is getting paid for me being there.

+Alessandra Burenin Fear can also come from telling everyone the reason you had a "Widow Maker" is because of genetics. Genetics is not a death sentence, and people should know they can easily overcome heart problems, even if they have bad heart genetics. That is a message of HOPE, not FEAR. People should just do some internet research of their own and find out more about what foods they are ingesting and how it can affect the heart.

2016: There is no evidence that high levels of total cholesterol or of “bad” cholesterol cause heart disease, according to a new paper by 17 international physicians based on a review of patient data of almost 1.3 million people. The authors also say their review shows the use of statins - cholesterol lowering drugs - is “of doubtful benefit” when used as primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. The authors include Galway-based Prof Sherif Sultan, professor of the International Society for Vascular Surgery; Scottish-based Dr Malcolm Kendrick, author of The Great Cholesterol Con; and Dr David M Diamond, a US-based neuroscientist and cardiovascular disease researcher. Prof Sultan said millions of people all over the world, including many with no history of heart disease, are taking statins “despite unproven benefits and serious side effects”. XXXX The failure of a study on the cholesterol-lowering drug evacetrapib was reported in April 2016 by its manufacturer, Eli Lilly, after spending $90 million of research and development costs. “The drug, evacetrapib, was pulled after it FAILED TO PREVENT one single case of heart attack, stroke, by-pass surgery, or angina-even though it successfully doubled levels of ‘good’ cholesterol and lowered ‘bad’ cholesterol. These results were presented to the American College of Cardiology's in April 2016, recounting that researchers found that drug did not demonstrate any clinically meaningful cardiovascular risk benefit, despite a 130% increase in “good” cholesterol, or HDL cholesterol, and a 37% reduction in “bad” cholesterol, which is called LDL cholesterol. In the meantime, Pfizer pharmaceutical famously spent $800 million on a large trial combining its blockbuster statin Lipitor with torcetrapib, a CETP inhibitor; the combination of the two drugs was ultimately found to RAISE THE RISK OF DEATH and heart problems in patients. In 2012, Roche also scrapped development of its CETP inhibitor, dalcetrapib, due to a “lack of clinically meaningful efficacy.” “This is a a blow to the cholesterol theorists.” Evacetrapib is the third CETP failure. The first, torcetrapib, actually increased the rate of CARDIOVASCULAR DEATHS and disease despite lowering bad cholesterol levels. Conclusion: the use of Lipitor and torcetrapib, dalcetrapib, and evacetrapib increased the good cholesterol while decreasing the bad cholesterol, however; it surely resulted in an increase of cardiovascular deaths. XXX 2009: Over 38 million people in the U.S. are currently taking statin drugs to lower high cholesterol levels. However, German scientists at the Martin Luther-University in Halle-Wittenberg have just published research in the Journal of Lipid Research that shows, for some people, taking statins actually increases the risk of having heart attacks. XXX 2004: Researchers at the Tulane University School of Medicine used electron beam tomography (EBT) to measure the progression of plaque buildup in heart-attack patients taking statin drugs. EBT is a very accurate way to measure occlusion from calcium in the arteries. Contrary to expectations, the researchers discovered that the progression of coronary artery calcium (CAC) was significantly greater in patients receiving statins compared with event-free subjects despite similar levels of LDL-lowering. Said the researchers: “Continued expansion of CAC may indicate failure of some patients to benefit from statin therapy and an increased risk of having cardiovascular events (Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol, April 1, 2004).

I have the answer...they really DO NOT KNOW. 12/26/2017 ANAHEIM, California - American Heart Association President John Warner was away from the AHA’s Scientific Sessions with his family Monday after having a minor heart attack during the organization’s flagship scientific conference. Warner, a practicing cardiologist and the CEO of UT Southwestern University Hospitals in Dallas, had the episode Monday morning. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors inserted a stent to open a clogged artery. He was recovering and visiting with his wife, son and daughter, all of whom attended the Scientific Sessions meeting in part to see him deliver his Presidential Address on Sunday afternoon. In that speech, the 52-year-old Warner talked about the effects of heart disease on his family. He mentioned how both his father and his father’s father had heart bypass surgery in their 60s. He also lost his maternal grandfather and a great grandfather to heart disease. He closed his speech with these lines: “Earlier in my talk, I told you there were no old men in my family. I know this is also true in far too many other families, not just in the U.S., but around the world.

She 's correct about plant-based being the healthiest way to live. That's the important part. You seem to have confirmation bias. In other words - you enjoy like the way fatty foods taste so you're more apt to believe data that supports your predetermined and most desired outcome. Very predictable. It's the pleasure trap.

What did he learn about himself? "Genetics." No, Bob, don't blame the genetic thing. You needed to eat a healthy diet and you need to eat a healthy diet now. A healthy diet will drastically lower the chance of your genes triggering a heart attack. Great that you got that drug endorsement, but drugs are only a stop gap after having a heart attack, a healthy diet will do a lot more to make you healthier. Yes, this is a preachy rant.
