Utopia! It was a show kinda like "the real world" back in maybe '08-09 ish? They picked 10 or 15 people to live on a "farm" ; they had to cultivate their own vegetables, raise cattle, chickens, and goats, build barns, or whatever else they wanted. They had to divide chores and cook. They were allowed money to buy things as a group or individually. And after every week they had to vote someone out. Oh and they had to commit for 1 year, couldn't leave the property for any reason, and if they did (one guy wanted to see the birth of his child) they were out for good. I LOVED this show and was disappointed to see it vanish out of thin air. :( I've always wondered why that show was cancelled in the middle of the season. So sad :(

My mom was actually on the show.. Gina Haddon. She with 2 other contestants are the only ones who kept the weight off. Going from working out over 10 hours a day, with basically no distractions, back to to normal life is extreme and it's hard to bounce back. Keep in mind its reality TV, and everything definitely made to be more dramatic and heightened than it actually is. My mom has kept most of the weight off and does crossfit every single day. We all changed when she came home and I know she's very grateful for her experience.She put in the work after the show and thats why she is the way she is. She does everything healthy and natural. But its up to the contestant AFTER the show to put that work in.

I can see how folks who were not into eating healthy/working out get put into a situation where that is the only focus, and embrace it but then when real life kicks in not being able to find that balance needed. If your genetics are prone to putting weight on your body, yes work outs and food have to be a priority there is no other way. Those folks w/ great skinny genetics good for them but if that isn;t your lottery ticket your life has to alter. I say this as a C survivor who has changed her diet dramatically not for weight loss but for prevention of additional Cancers and it isn't fair! I can't/shouldn't eat donuts each day, I need to eat greeens, I need to digest Tumeric, I need to ensure I build up certain vitamins/minerals more than others. I don't have the luxury of it being a choice, it is a must a new lifestyle. It sounds like your mom learned that in the show.I can only imagine how much discipline it takes her to keep it all up! I applaud her.
@ldean83605 жыл бұрын
It's not supposed to be that hard. If you learn what to eat life is so much easier. Buy a glucose meter - let it guide your eating choices. Lift heavy weights 45 minutes 2x per week do a bit of HIIT and a few cardio days. Don't be afraid to try keto and fasting. Work smarter, not harder.

@martinirving38244 жыл бұрын
More fun fact: Bob Harper almost certainly had insulin resistance and prediabetes his entire adult life. The "prudent" low fat diet recommended by the medical and fitness establishment was not the least bit protective and, clearly, nor was the exercise. Blaming it on genetics is convenient for all concerned but the fact of the matter is, this shouldn't have happened. It is a sweet irony that this show so clearly demonstrated, albeit unintentionally, that the calorie model - eat less, move more - simply doesn't work long term. And Harper demonstrated you can't out run an inappropriate diet lacking essential nutrients while relatively high in (healthy) carbs.

I agree that the biggest loser was most likely not the best way to go about it. I do believe some people need that constant "kick in the ass." Regardless of the reason. I'm guessing the reason that many gained the weight back could be attributed to many things but I believe one of the biggest reason is once they hit that goal mark they got content. It's like training for a marathon and you finally finish. Do you keep training or do you get content that you finish a goal? Once you finish one goal, You have to reassess and make new goals. This is what the show at its true core was about for the contestants. You have an overall goal but you need to hit smaller goals to stay in the competition. Once you win or kick off the show, you have to keep going. It's easier to workout when someone is pushing you. It's difficult when they only person holding you accountable is yourself. I believe if anything we can learn from the show is we are capable of more than we think we can.

It's very simple. Most of the contestants gained the weight back plus often more. The end.

For those saying the show was helpful for those overweight. They put these people through hell. Many got sick from the way they treated them. Just because they are over weight doesn’t mean they can treat them like shit. Shame on those that are bashing them. May you never fall ill and gain weight without control. How the hell did they get “ yellow jackets”. I’m surprised the didn’t have more then one heart attack.

I heard story about ex contestant. He said it was so unhealthy, people were mistreated and it wasn’t good at all. When I met him, he was really big. Definitely over 130kg and I was very young but I still remember that man. Glad this show is gone

what's crazy to me is that this is so transforming mentally and spiritually and these people beg to stay on the show because they're learning so much about themselves and they feel great, but then go home and forget it all? what's the deal with that?

It was a very informative show at the beginning... but starting from season 8 (I think), it deviated from the course and became a simple competition "made-dramatic" show.

I would love to see this show come back I really would but stop eliminating contestants and educate them about why they put on the weight after the 1st week dont let them just sit in shame....you KNOW why they are putting on weight. Challenge them to help each other and way more education too. A therapist is needed behind the scenes, that is the best education that will help authentic healing and weight loss. The show would sky rocket.

We’re not going to talk about Rachel that looked emaciated by the end of the show? I always suspected this show was fucking people up but it wasn’t until her that I was completely turned off to it.

The only two truly good seasons were 7 and 11. The rest weren't that great, and it also doesn't promote a healthy/realistic message on weight loss. Losing weight so quickly with over exercising and crash diets destroys the metabolism, and this is essentially why most of the contestants gained weight back.

Drug allegations had been swirling about the Biggest Loser Ranch for years, but I personally believe the final straw was Rachel Fredrickson. Not saying that she used drugs at all. Rachel was a state swimming champion in high school. She was even quoted to say "I think my background as an elite athlete helped me a lot". Yeah, there were plenty of former athletes on the show, but when ex-NFL players and weightlifters train, it's for the purpose of getting muscular (bigger). Training for swimmers is the complete opposite. So out of the "average American" who may have been athletic in their youth but are now in their 40s or still in their youth but were never really active, the WINNER of the final season was a person who just six years prior was a swimming God. I lost all respect for the show because even though us viewers knew that this was a game show, there was always a handful of contestants who we actually enjoyed following on their weight-loss journey, and were rooting for to win the 250K. Pretty simple format: Weight-loss PRIMARY, prize money SECONDARY.

Rachel ruined it for me because unlike other contestants who lost a spouse / child, been overweight their entire lives, or suffered from deep-seated self-esteem issues, Rachel was fat simply because she just got fat. In fact, she got fat because she blew off chances to swim competitively to follow some foreign exchange student, which didn't work out so going on the BL was her road back to redemption, so to speak. I remember NOT rooting for her at all during that season. Not because I didn't like her but it just didn't feel like she needed my emotional support (through the TV screen). Yeah, they had to shoot segments where the coaches gave the one-on-one pep-talks, but Rachel really seemed to be on auto-pilot the whole time. Rachel ruined the show because she broke my last pair of rose-tinted glass and shoved in my face "THIS IS ALL A GAME". If you learn something about yourself along the way, GREAT, but come on this show, lose the most weight and GET MONEY. In my heart, I believe Rachel had the pre-instilled knowledge and work ethic to lose that weight at any time in her life but said "Why not lose the weight AND get 250K?"

Well, that's pretty shameful, especially with Jillian Michaels running around telling lies about keto. I'm here to tell you keto works and I've never been more healthy, having lost over 1/3 of my body weight from my all time high, and keeping it off. Oh yeah, not diabetic, not on any pharmaceuticals, and minus at least a half a dozen metabolically-related disorders. I'll never go back to eating carbage. Exercise bulimia is no way to become healthy. A sensible eating plan (not extreme calorie deficits) and reasonable daily exercise is. It's about getting healthy, and losing weight as a side effect, not about burning out your body hoping to get healthy.

Its evident that long term weight loss is not possible. Research it people. Even if you keep exercising and restricting kcal. Don't do it. Health at every size is possible and weight is not a moral issue.

The show itself had a healthy motive but a unhealthy way of helping people lose weight, they should have done healthy diets and safer exercise, that is how you properly lose weight

The ratings may have been dropping, but as pointed out, this show was produced at least 2 seasons ahead. They would be running a season, with another in the can, another in production, while selecting participants for the next. They would have stopped production and then let the show run it's course and end if it had only been over ratings. BUT THE REASON that the show started to lose viewers was that former contestants and people associated with the production of the show started talking about how this fast, major weight loss was accomplished. Less than 800 calories a day, 8-10 hrs a day in the gym, and amphetamines and hormones. Yes. You can do this at home! No, you can't, which is why all but a handful of contestants gained all their weight back and more. Permanent weight loss requires permanent behavior modification. This show NEVER even touched on that. All "reality" TV is BS. It's all scripted and rehearsed, or it's all BS like Biggest Loser, unless there's a game involved (great race, survivor). Those are game shows and there are laws and regulations about that. They have to be legit. Biggest Loser was kind of a game show, yes. But enough removed that the regulations in place did not apply.

if you continue to get most of your calories from carbs exercise will have to remain an obsession if you want to stay in shape, otherwise go low carb. Unless you plan to making a living off it, it's not a good idea to have your life revolve around exercise.

Everyone stopped watching because the show was doing way more harm than good. It wasn't healthy dropping all that weight in such a short amount of time, not to mention the fact they weren't being realistic with the contestants and changing habits that would stick as soon as they left. They were abusing people who really needed help.

A lot more people kept the 😂weight off. Some foolishly thought that they could maintain their newfound weight without putting in the work! You have to constantly work at it! Some of them were even unappreciative. I dreamed of being on that show. I watch the reruns daily, all day and most of the night. It inspires me now, it inspired me then. I’m old now. This show will always be my favorite. I hope that a new show emerges that is similar to it! The government should always have a show on tv that addresses how people should eat and exercise. It should be free to watch and relatable to every age group! Until we get that; I’ll be watching THE Biggest Loser!
