Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, introduced by Johnny Carson, perform a medley of each other’s hits and duet on “Put it There, Pal” from “Road to Utopia”.
Some comments below refer to my original description, in which I stated I had no idea what this was clip was from, only that it was a hospital benefit, probably from mid to late circa 1970 (based on Carson's joke about David Eisenhower and the naval reserve). Thanks to viewer Jack Daugherty for enlightening me (I wasn't far off!):
"This was a portion of a "Bob Hope Show" broadcast on February 16, 1970 on NBC. It was a fundraiser held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NYC, to raise funds for the construction of the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage CA. Other performers included Ray Bolger (singing "Once in Love with Mamie" for Mamie Eisenhower, who was in attendance), Raquel Welch, Johnny Cash and the West Point Choir. More than 2 million dollars was raised during the evening and the main hospital opened in November, 1971. Bob and Delores Hope donated the original 80 acres that the hospital was built on and were fundraisers for the hospital for over 30 years."
By the way, Carson mentions that the price to dine that night was $1,000 a plate. In May 2023 dollars, that's $7,818.63.

@@Heres_Johnny. When that happened, their “ad-libs” were usually written. Hope and Crosby both had their own writers, employed for their respective radio shows. When Bob and Bing received their script for each Road movie, they would each hand the script over to their writers, to come up with “ad-libs” to use to throw off the other and add a touch of “spontanaeity” but they would’ve each rehearsed their lines till they had them down pat. That’s not to say they NEVER ad-libbed (in “Road to Morocco”, a camel spits in Hope’s eye and Bing says ‘good girl’, that was an ad-lib) but they weren’t writers (even Hope’s many books were ghost-written) just great actors who could make written “ad-libs” appear thought-up on the spot.

Thanks to modern technology, you can enjoy the entertainers of long ago. I suggest you check out the seven "road" movies they made together. "Road to Singapore", "Road to Zanzibar", "Road to Morocco", "Road to Utopia", "Road to Rio", "Road to Bali" and "Road to Hong Kong". The first was a basic "buddy comedy"/"love triangle" which several stars turned down before someone at Paramount hit on the brilliant idea of teaming Crosby and Hope, both under contract and acquaintances (they were never great friends, didn't socialise) who had enjoyed working together in a few stage appearances. The film was a big hit and started the series, which lasted 22 years. If you watch the films in the order they were made, you can see the formula develop, the running gags (especially "patty cake") and the proliferation of "in-jokes". These guys were meta before that was even a thing, making jokes about each others' films, for instance. "Morocco" and "Utopia" are very surreal (talking camels, talking fish) and those two are my favourites. "Hong Kong" wasn't made by Paramount (Hope and Crosby produced) and is the weakest of the series, but worth watching. At the time of Crosby's death in 1977, they were planning another "Road" film, "Road to the Fountain of Youth". I used to think maybe it's good that it wasn't made, as it may have spoiled the legacy, but seeing them here, maybe I'm wrong.

@@gerrynightingale9045 Delores Hope was an extremely intelligent and beautiful lady who, from what I have read knew about bobs lady friends and still stayed in the marriage. Her choice and nobody else's concern. Bing's daughter in interviews commented on how Gary spoke to her after his books release and explained to her what had been written wasn't really the way it happened and later apologised to the family. He was also reinterviewed later on and was asked about some of the things in his book and his answers were interesting. Bing's other three sons gave defensive quotes about their father but definitely acknowledged he had faults. I don't think Gary meant to do any harm to his father's reputation but was going through a difficult time. In the end Bing had seven beautiful talented children who he did love.

@@gerrynightingale9045 Bing never abandoned his beautiful wife Dixie, she passed from cancer, and she adored him to her dying day. Read her letters to him. Read about why his sons suicided, in their early to mid fifties. They had money problems, relationship problems, etc. The fact that the youngest shot himself shortly after his investment money went bust is well documented. Read about what his other three sons were quoted about saying defending their father after the books release. I'm not saying they weren't spanked because they were, it is just Gary reinterviewed stated he couldn't remember writing some of the things as he had been drunk at the time. As Gary wrote the book and then admitted this and apologised to the family and was working on a tribute album to his father shortly before his passing, you have to wonder about the reasons behind him writing it. A close family member in an interview mentioned that there were two drafts submitted. Mary, his stepsister, clarifies the reasons why the book was spiced up, as she and Gary spoke about it. Have you also read Linnys complete defence of his father's saying he had let his boys down, in a story from years ago and Linnys ex-wife saying Bing had been a very good father to Linny. This is the son that first suicided. Bing and Dixie were both disciplinarians but they loved there boys. And even Gary mentioned Bing never punished them for kicks, rather that he really cared and was probably no more strict than most father's of that time.

@@spikespa5208 I doubt any of it was ad-libbed. They were just brilliant at making their scripts seem off the cuff. Of course, I don’t know for sure and neither do you, but it’s a safe bet the “ad libs” were scripted. When they made the road movies, Bing and Bob would give their scripts to their respective radio writers, who would supply “jabs” for them to toss at each other while filming. Yes, it was to be called "The Road to the Fountain of Youth". I remember after Bing died, there was talk of Bob doing it with George Burns, but it didn't happen. Possibly just as well. Bing and Bob looked pretty tired in "Road to Hong Kong" (1962) and it's not a great coda to the series, but probably better than what a 1970's teaming would be. Also, some of those later Bob Hope films are just embarrassing and sadly what many people will only know him for, things like "Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number!" and his last "Cancel My Reservation" is (imo) woeful. Bing has a cameo in that.

@BabyFaceBren
@BabyFaceBren 4 жыл бұрын
@@jamescampion7880 It has some good moments. It's in my DVD collection, as the series wouldn't be complete without it. love the opening song "Teamwork" with references to the previous 6 films, a tradition going back to the 2nd, when they repeated the patty-cake routine and by the 3rd ("Morocco"), they were referencing Dorothy Lamour in the title song! They were meta decades before that was even a term. Yes, the Sellers cameo is great, but as some have said, he tends to upstage them, by being funnier and once he's gone you are reminded that they are a bit past it. Still, weaker Bing and Bob is better than the best of many other comics and Hong Kong has got to be better than what I imagine a 70's film would be (though they are great in this short reunion). If it were today, CGI could be used to make them actually appear young after visiting the fountain of youth. That would've been cool. I think it's sad that they didn't use Lamour as the third lead, due to her age. They wouldn't get away with it today. Bob gave in to Bing and the studio, but he insisted on her having a small role. Incidentally, I can't watch Crosby and Joan Collins' love scenes without thinking of her mentioning in her autobiography that he had the worst breath because of the pipe he always smoked and she said kissing him was like kissing a camel.

I think I must've been 10 when I saw my first Road movie. My first 4 in fact. They were on a midnight to dawn movie marathon on TV. I woke the family laughing so much and this was Australia in the 70's, not USA in the 40's so most of the jokes went over my head, but I got enough to add a love of the surreal to my psyche. I'd like to say Hope and Crosby were the pioneers, but 20 years earlier (now 100 years ago!) Buster walked into a movie screen. The Pythons were lauded for their surreal comedy (and I love them) but they were just being naughtier Bings and Bobs. It's so cool how meta they were, before meta was a thing. I showed Road to Morocco to a friend recently who'd never seen either in a film, let alone together. He was loving it, but when the camels started talking, he looked at me with amazement and said "this is so NOW!"

Bob could walk on to Johnny’s show to promote whatever he was doing anytime he wished, Johnny had no veto for this one man. Johnny got so upset with this issue at NBC he put his contract renewal in question. NBC gave Johnny a gushing tribute and paid for a tennis court at his Malibu home……including a bench from the Wimbledon court.

Johnny was not fond of Bob being on his show because Bob was not a good ad-libber (he had cue cards for all his USO shows). One of the great things about Johnny was his ability to be spontaneous (Best examples was the famed episode with Bob, Dean Martin and George Gobel and another when after having egg and whipped cream fights with Dom Deluise and Burt Reynolds, Art Came out in his boxer shorts looking half-ripped). On a lot of Bob's Tonight Show appearances, he was usually the first guest and then rarely stayed for the rest of the show (unless someone like Dean Martin was the next guest)

What an amazing team. I wish I was around at the time.to.experience them in real time. I loved how every outside of the Road To movies they would appear in each other's acts and films. Their relationship on screen and over the radio either together or poking fun at each other in absentia was fantastic

I agree. I also discovered those films at a young age, on an all-night movie marathon. My favourite is "Road to Morocco", with "Utopia" a close second. I recently showed "Morocco" to a friend who laughed a lot and was surprised how "modern" it is. Bing and Bob were meta long before that was a thing!
