Her utter incompetence is the most astonishing part of this fiasco. People have made bad movies before, and will in the future. But the more I learn about how she mismanaged the whole project, the more confused I am how on earth someone so objectively incompetent got into such a position of power and responsibility. I mean, I've never been the boss of anything, and even I would have understood that 1) you need to plan out the whole trilogy first before you start producing any of it, 2) don't let the directors ignore what pre-existing plans you have but make them stick to them, and 3) only hire directors once you've talked with them about what both you and they want from the movie, so you don't have hire and fire and then desperately look for a last minute replacement hire... repeatedly. No one gives a crap that I watched No Game No Life and I won't be discussing that with anyone else so the program had to entertain me on its own. I have developed an extreme distaste and distrust for large projects like Westworld Game of Thrones and Star Wars. This is because of the high likelihood my expectations will be subverted or that the programs will simply turn bad. I'm also bitterly opposed to the concept of paying $150 for 15 streaming channels so I can see the content that used to be on Netflix. And there's the development of entertainment such as your program which now consumes a good 10 hours to 15 hours a week of my entertainment time budget. Chapek is the one who placed huge cost cutting measures on the Star Wars expansion at Disney which has lead to huge disappointments and increased visitor dissatisfaction. Eisner's problem was he tried to hard to micro-manage but at least he understood the importance of the Disney magic and ensuring that it was more important keeping visitors happy/satisfied then shareholders. When your customers are happy/satisfied sales are more then likely to be good if not increases and that in turn will make shareholders happy. The entire corporate world has been turned upside down with this shortsighted focus on shareholders over stakeholders, placing more emphasis on making shareholders happy instead of employees and customers. It's lead to many profitable short gain strategies that have disastrous long term damages like Just in in time inventory systems and focusing on Market Growth over Market security. The smart phone industry is seeing market saturation and because it built its model around constant growth it snow facing serous problems.

Has anybody noticed that 2 Disney parks are currently shuttered? And best case estimates put them as closed until late March. If the best case estimates hold Disney will only lose $300 Million. But there is no sign that the best case will become a reality. There is a greater sign that COVID 19, the Wuhan Corona Virus will instead be a bomb set off under Disney's business plans. How many days will it be until one of the major parks is forced to close? Tokyo is in jeopardy already. With the major outbreak in Northern Italy Paris is threatened. How soon until it hits Orlando? There is already a worrying case in LA. The Parks are Disney and Disney studios Safety Net. They are the guaranteed money to cover the up and downs of the entertainment industry. The Coronavirus is already impacting Travel, Hotels, and Vacations. It prevents people from gathering, even going to the movies in the largest growing market. What will Disney's expected return on Mulan look like if there are no theaters able to show it in China? How is this impacting Disney's Cruise Ships? Yeah, there will be blood in the coming weeks. And Iger doesn't want it on his hands. Hence Bob "Chainsaw" Chapek gets the nod. Bob's specialty is cutting costs to the bone. Then taking a bonesaw to what remains. AT&T is likely going through their own similar gyrations. While they don't have the travel parks and resorts to worry about, their portfolio is more dependent on cinema. We have a rising Black Swan event that will hit these industries harder than just about anything else. Normal consumer demand for most products and household goods will return as the virus fades with summer. But the travel industry will take years to recover.

I find it interesting to consider that, so far as I can see, both of Iger's biggest success and biggest failure come from the same thing: buying a successful property, giving the person in charge lots of money, and getting out of the way. It worked out with Marvel, because they had a plan they were committed to and the right people at the top to see it through. It failed with Star Wars because, far as I can tell, they weren't committed to any plan, and the people at the top seem to be more interested in their own pet ideas than what little plan they *did* have.

Honestly, even with Iger done as CEO, I doubt anything positive will come from this. Kennedy is in a prime spot to be appointed as the CEO with Iger in his current position, meaning more of the same crap for at least another decade. All the same, I’m glad to see him step down and if he runs for POTUS, I’m not voting for him knowing how he trashed Disney, Lucasfilm and Fox. At this point, I hope Disney gets in such dire financial straits that they have to sell everything they bought.
@MrAlcazar4 жыл бұрын
This wasn't so much a "stepping down," for Iger, it's more of a "fail upward." A popular trend in Disney these days. Just look at Kennedy. She drove a beloved franchise into the ground, and hasn't once been reprimanded for it.
@RichardRagan4 жыл бұрын
I am surprised Disney's board of directors let Iger and Kennedy stay on for so long. They should have axed both of them, taken the bad press, then declared TLJ non-cannon, and brought in talent to do the last three movies. The damage might already have been done to SW. Since the rest of Disney is ok, the corporation can probably absorb the loss and limp along with a new trilogy that will have an uphill battle to prove itself.

I find it somewhat hard to fathom that Disney do not have a special crew to "take care of problems" like KK. Her disappearance would definitely have people talking and rumours would be flying for a few days/weeks, but ultimately, Disney would weather the storm and everyone could look forward to blue skies.
@darthdurkelthewise3204 жыл бұрын
I disagree that Iger will be diving into a Presidential run any time soon. In the longer term perhaps but not now. He’s not even answering to stockholders about foggy streaming numbers, lack of park interest, or Star Wars for that matter. He’ll need to get those things straight before jumping on a campaign bus. Iger really doesn’t have a shining record right now either. Iger has spent a lot of money and added a ton of debt to Disney’s back end. Iger was never a creative leader and isn’t today. In fact before he got the CEO job there wasn’t a lot of confidence in his creative decision making capabilities and as you correctly stated he had to fight hard to get that job. Furthermore, Chapek is not a class favorite among the employees at Disney as he has put a lot of spending on the chopping block while raising prices for park goers substantially. He’s your cheap uncle that still sends you a $5 bill for your birthday. However, on the flip side this could be a good thing for Iger’s spending problem. I just don’t think any of this is a good look for Disney. As far as Kathleen Kennedy, everyone knows she’s a cancer right now but IMO Iger won’t touch her for a variety of reasons I’m sure. He’s too connected and has too many people/friends that could become enemies if he himself fired Kennedy in the current political climate. However, perhaps he either believes/knows Chapek will make a move or maybe he’ll have Chapek do the deed as he remains in the background as Chairman, away from any blowback. Only time will tell and there’s no doubting that the speedy nature of these moves surface more questions than answers but I’d bet we’re seeing rough times ahead for Disney and a shakeup is upon us. Get your popcorn 🍿 Great content as always 👍🏻

Whether they get rid of KK now or wait for her contract to expire I don't think makes a difference. The damage that's already been caused is too great. However, if they get rid of her now instead of waiting for the contract to expire, it could be viewed as an olive branch to the fandom. As for recovering Star Wars, short of massive retcons, I don't see how that happens.
@JohanMsWorld4 жыл бұрын
I think they have a chance to kick her upwards as the saying goes - Aka to a position as CEO of the parks that is now vacant. There she has a much better position to use her business skills and experience to run the parks while still having a as large (or larger) presence as she had when she was CEO of Lucasfilm. Johan.

Seems if Iger is thinking 2024, maybe he needs someone running everything for him so he can concentrate on preparing himself; and he keeps final say. KKk probably is a thorn now, and they have to figure how to pull without leading.

Honestly worried the Disney board is blaming bob and not kk. Disney was at fault for rushing the sequel trilogy and not redirecting kk’s focus on crushing the ot characters and promoting only a girl power agenda. But kk and her team wrote poorly and crapped on the fans

Star Wars isn’t dead by any means I think. All it needs is 1 fantastic movie to get it back on track, ala Batman Begins / Dark Knight. Deep down, I think all the fans still love Star Wars even after the terrible last few movies (esp Last Jedi), and if Disney can deliver that 1 unbelievably amazing movie, the fans will give back their support. That’s my hope at least 🙏🙏
