Exactly. He was really against it originally. I saw an interview with him from the 90s. Then he saw how many people suddenly got in to his music through Hip Hop. Then he coincidentally changed his mind lol. Great artist no matter what.

Its funny. By the late 2000s I had become quite disgusted with the state of Hip Hop music (I was missing the Golden Age '90s something awful) and around this time I started getting into 70s jazz like Grover Washington, Ramsey Lewis, Earl Klugh, Bob James or 70s Lite-Rock groups like Steely Dan....and you guessed it, all the original music sampled by the top hip hop acts of the '90s!!

You should do one of these types of videos for Roy Ayers. I remember seeing a video where he compared himself and James Brown in terms of how much they've been sampled, and he said while JB might've been sampled more in general, Roy was sampled on more #1 hits 😂 (he wasn't dissing JB of course, he said all this with his classic Roy Ayers smirk on his face)

Not how it works. Most of the time you just pay a fee through publishing, and only pay royalties if the song is released as a single. It is called a royalty free license. What happens is whoever owns the publishing, makes the song available for commercial licensing. And every song has a price. It can be very cheap or expensive. That cheap or expensive fee is usually a royalty free license, and you must agree that if you release your song with their sample as a single, you must pay a certain percentage of each sale. The percentage of royalties are different depending on whatever they require you to pay. They may require you pay 2% in royalties, but some acts like the Beatles require 50% in royalties. He no doubt makes way more from licensing his music for commercial use in movies, TV shows and commercials than he does from samples. That is where the money is. Every time the song plays on TV you get the licensing fee. Fun story. Remember WKRP? When they did the show they purposely picked songs with cheap licensing fees, usually from new bands. Well a lot of those songs went on to be hits, and the fee went way up for those songs. Now networks will not run WKRP because they have to pay the licensing fees for every song, which is why you never see WKRP reruns. They literally randomly picked a bunch of future hit songs, and it made the show become to expensive to play on TV 40 years later.

Not sure what you mean. Big Beat is one of the most sampled tracks ever. It appears on the classic Breaks & Beats collection if that’s what you were asking. Those albums were just compilations of classic tracks that have been sampled.
