Imagine if he had never gotten in the studio. We would never of had those hits we are all so familiar with. It's slightly sickening that most of these producers built nothing from the ground up. I remember hearing Bob James' joints out in the parks back in the 70s. Moms had an album or two of Bob's, Touchdown I remember because of the football on the cover and the song "Angela" being the theme from the tv show Taxi, one of my favorite tv shows back in the day. Then Hip Hop music starts it's monumental run on the radio and DJs would cut up Nautilus and Take Me To The Mardi Gras live on-air for years. Then comes sampling. And finally, I have my own collection of old school classic records to spin and sample for my turntable setup and MPC hardware and software. Hopefully, my son will inherit these items and appreciate these works of Hip Hop cultural art. Full circle and beyond.

My mother was a singer as well, so music has always been a part of my life. They’re the ones that introduced me to the likes of Bob James, George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Jimi Hendrix, The Isley Brothers, Donnie Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Grover Washington Jr., etc. I miss the days of my parents throwing lite parties, BBQ’s, & neighborhood block parties with all of that good music!

Has anyone sampled Westchester Lady? That will always be, hands down, my favorite Bob James song. Went to college in northern Maine back in the early 90s, a culture shock for a kid like me from Brooklyn, NY. Once my buddy and I, spur of the moment, jumped into his Acura Integra to head down to NYC on a Friday afternoon to escape the campus for the weekend, going 95mph the whole way. As the city lights of New York appeared on the horizon and we left Connecticut, Westchester Lady came on the radio! Man, that was magic!!! Magic memories of youth!
