It was great to hear this type of representation of hip hop made in the West Coast. Most know the West Coast for the gangsta rap. Which is sad. Black Eyed Peas lost touch of this flavor. But, it looks like they are trying swing back to it. Good for them.

When he mentioned “like Quincy’s Back on the Block” what he meant was using the blueprint of the album meaning doing collabos with current Hip Hop (and other genre) artists and capitalizing on the fame he already has in the hip hop world and expose himself to a new generation (also increasing record sales of his old stuff) while simultaneously adding some new style to his new songs on a new album. Don’t think he wanted to correct The Legend and I don’t blame him. Can you imagine a new Bob James album with a bunch of all the now great artists who sampled him and a ton of current artists? The key to sampling and making a great record is knowing how to spot the best parts - That ‘Back on the Block’ idea was genius. BTW Miles did it. Herbie Hancock did it. George Clinton did it. It’s a proven formula.
@pukysand

I see some people aren't clear on how "Children's Story" samples "Nautilus". There are two sides of a song- the sound recording(the actual song) and the composition(basically the underlying melody). An example of a sample of the sound recording is Jay Z and Kanye West "Otis". It's a direct sample from the "Try a Little Tenderness" sound recording by Otis Redding. So that would be sampling both sides to use that. But some samples people don't use the sound recording but use the composition and play or sing it over themselves. It doesn't matter if they use one instrument, they still are sampling. So Bob James Nautilus if you listen to the base line in the beginning, then listen to "Children's Story" it's a replayed sample. It's that piano part. So when people say their record was sampled, it might not be the sound recording itself or even the main part because some recordings sample multiple songs. Back in the day the producers The Bomb Squad had records where they sampled 20 songs.

I'd be curious to know if Bob James saw an increase in sales of Bob James 1 and 2 when hip hop DJs were buying 2 copies of each during the late 70s and early 80s. I had 2 original copies of each even though they had a crude compilation of break beats on one album called "super disco breaks" and the "da da dum" intro of Mardi Gras actually skipped, so you couldn't even cut it from the beginning.

That’s not exactly the same melody, though, there are 9 notes in Slick’s replay while there are 7 in Bob James’… I know there has to be a minimum differences for it to be considered a new composition ; I guess it’s right in between the two, so I guess that Bob wouldn’t be as mad about it as if it was a straight uncleared sample. Plus Rick is artistically way ahead of the rest, as far of originality, not to mention the cleverness of his conscious storytelling.
