Born in 1957, grew up watching the captain in the early 60's. Then, as a photojournalist in 1986, got an assignment to photograph him during a children's library speech he gave in our area. I'm waiting at the bottom of a side stairway for him to approach the stage when I hear footsteps coming down the stairs behind me. I glance back and it's HIM! All by himself with is notes. My mouth drops open like”do you know who you are?” Type of look, but we started to chat, I tried to recite all the characters from his show and when I got stuck on Tom Terrific, he says “Now come one, you can do it.” I nearly peed myself. He was a genuinely nice person. My only regret from our encounter is I did not get a picture of us together.

One of my very few celebrity encounters was with Bob Keeshan. My family and I were staying at a hotel while visiting my sister, who was in college. The hotel was 2 stories, and the second story had a staircase that provided direct access to the parking lot. I was about 10 at the time, going down those stairs, and Bob Keeshan came down behind me, going down the stairs as fast as he could, nearly knocking me down. I assume he was in a hurry to get to an engagement of some time. I did grab hold of the stair railing and didn't fall, but my mother was a bit upset that this large man never saw her little boy and kept going. It was only as he was going by that we realized it was Captain Kangaroo himself.

The last time I saw Bob Keeshan was in 1997, when he appeared as the Wizard in the St. Louis Muny Opera production of "The Wizard of Oz". The production itself was as amateur as a high school play, but Keeshan alone made the whole experience worthwhile. You couldn't have cast a better wizard.

There has been a long-believed rumor that Bob Keeshan was with actor Lee Marvin fighting in WWIIat Iwo Jima. Lee Marvin made that up. Bob Keeshan enlisted when he turned 18 in 1945. WWII was ending in 1945, which may have been a blessing in disguise for this actor, since he never had to face combat. We would have lost another great man without ever knowing what he could do for children. He would never have played Clarabelle from Howdy Doody or Captain Kangaroo. FUN BOOK, GREAT MEMORIES. Too bad such shows like CK are so few and far between--never really cared for Sesame Street--too lame and predictable. Oh well, at least the Captain and his crew had WAY more action, MORE comedy, MORE variety but also VERY clean cut, politically incorrect but nothing at all nasty or vulgar. Ah, how I miss the 70's, whether it was educational (CK, CBS Children's Film Festival, Schoolhouse Rock) or network (Banana Splits, Krofft Supershow, Scooby-Doo). Such good times ;-)

Also, why did she mention about the New Captain Kangaroo Show at 2:46 without even mentioning that it was being produced by Saban Entertainment, the same people behind Power Rangers? If my memory serves me, I think they had at first invited Bob to offer his input, but then they had later kicked him out. From what I once read on his take on Saban (and I quote) "They could do a fine program, but I don't know. It's just that I've never seen them do a quality program."
