Wow. Two gentleman who are technically "enemy's" and competitors in the same industry having a productive conversation and being respectful to one an other. It was so refreshing to see this, I wish people will carry themselves like that in today's age.

You can blame that on the financialization of the economy as well as the increase in technology that lets people pick and choose who they associate with, leading to the loss of the ability to effectively communicate with people who aren't like you.

*@Andrew Lohbihler* -- Rewind, and listen more closely. He started with the caveats that Tesla would have to _'overcome'_ certain challenges, particularly distrubution and sales, which he assumed Tesla would be using the same _'Independent Franchised Dealerships'_ that GM, Ford, & Chrysler had been saddled with for decades. He knew full well they were a contentious group, that they would NOT make it easy for a newcomer, would not be easy to deal with. He had no idea whatsoever that Tesla would simply bypass Dealerships entirely, to sell direct to consumers. Best way to avoid problems? Don't go there. Tesla has outsold Acura, Alfa Romeo, Cadillac, Chrysler, GENESIS, INFINITI, Lincoln, Lexus, Maserati, and Porsche brands each in the U.S. through 2018 and 2019 because they do NOT use _'independent franchised dealerships'_ at all. It turned out to be the correct decision. No fully electric vehicle from any manufacturer has outsold Tesla's EVs nationally in the U.S. while being sold through dealerships. Thereby proving *Elon Musk's* point, that Tesla wouldn't survive using dealerships as their sole distribution and sales method. _'Independent Franchised Dealerships'_ make the majority of their profit, around ~60% or more from sales of parts, maintenance, and service. Things that EVs should not need with any frequency. So dealers have no motivation to sell EVs they will then almost never see again as a paying customer.

@@redxsage Well it seems that Tesla overcame those challenges, so why does Bob Lutz keep downplaying them ??
@redxsage
@redxsage 4 жыл бұрын
@@Andrewlohbihler -- Despite being an _'industry expert',_ *Bob Lutz* has proven to actually know NOTHING about how Tesla operates at all. Yes, this was in 2011. GM had released the Chevrolet VOLT in late 2009. Though GM artfully crafted the term _'Extended Range EV' (EREV)_ through their marketing department to describe it, no one was fooled. It was immediately defined as a _'Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle' (PHEV)_ instead by the automotive press. GM tried to use some technical jargon to confuse the matter, saying that their own term EREV was a more apt description than PHEV, but they eventually gave up. Bottom line -- the VOLT was a gasoline powered car that offered _SOME_ fully electric range. NOT the opposite, as GM had claimed. *_'Finally! An electric car that runs on gas!'_* ...proclaimed the sole commercial they ran in California for the Chevrolet VOLT _(pretty much lifting Toyota's initial advertising campaign for the PRIUS, verbatim)._ At the time, Tesla had only released the Tesla Roadster, in limited quantities. They had Delivered _(SOLD)_ around ~2,600 units worldwide between 2008 and 2011. A laughable, easily dismissed quantity to a former GM Exec. A _'boutique'_ level of sales to be ignored. An insignificant portion of bespoke vehicles designed to be _'Toys... for the RICH!'_ Nothing more. So, *Bob Lutz* could be forgiven for his perspective and presumption. He probably expected Tesla _'might'_ prove to be a worthy competitor to Ferrari or Lamborghini, McLaren or Maserati... _'some day'._ No way could he have forseen that less than a decade later Tesla would outsell Cadillac, Chrysler, and Lincoln in the U.S. in two conscutive calendar years, 2018 and 2019. And he had no reason back then to investigate to learn that Tesla had NO _'Independent Franchised Dealerships'_ anywhere in the U.S. or worldwide. So, he didn't actually know that Tesla sold direct, and wisely, *Elon Musk* didn't tell him, didn't interrupt him, didn't correct him, as he went on a tirade about Tesla's _'hardships'_ or _'barriers to success'_ to come. In fact, *Elon Musk* was notably cagey in NOT mentioning Tesla's intent to KEEP selling direct to consumers. Something no division of GM, Chrysler, or Ford was allowed to do at all. He kept those cards close to the vest. Knowing full well he should NOT encourage the wrath of a lobbying base such as NADA _(National Automobile Dealers Association)_ who might take issue with an attempt to _'cut them out of the loop'_ for selling NEW cars. Of course, *Bob Lutz* was similarly cagey, not mentioning that it was incredibly hard to get dealerships to accept sales contracts for the Chevrolet VOLT. Why would dealers resist selling an awesome new car? Over 60% of the annual profit margin that _'Independent Franchised Dealerships'_ make each year is from Maintence, Repairs, and Service. Functions that are all greatly reduced with electric vehicles. Hence, exactly why the VOLT included an ICE. Traditional conventional legacy ICE automobile manufacturers are afraid to release fully electric cars in large quantities because it would really *[PEEVE]* their actual customers -- dealers. Because they are not allowed to sell to anyone else. Also, because much of their accounting of vehicle profitability literally is based upon constant recurring income from licensing of parts as OEM to third party suppliers, who then provide supply chains to stores like AutoZone, O'Reilly, NAPA, Pep Boys, etc. over the next two or three decades. But none of that revenue would be forthcoming with a properly built EV. So traditional conventional legacy ICE automobile manufacturers don't actually want to build Electric Vehicles. Because not only would they not make money from the initial sale of EVs, but they'd have to _'give up'_ on the revenue they'd get on the backside of ICE transactions in the long run. Because, really? There's no way to build an EV in a manner that it will spontaneously decompose _(fall apart)_ in a predictable manner just as the warranty expires. EVs don't have a built-in, guaranteed market for spare parts. Basically, once you get them to work, they'll operate for decades, perhaps over 100 years. Wiper fluid, wiper blades, tires, and rarely maybe brake pads and perhaps brake fluid. That's about it. *Bob Lutz* didn't even know that Tesla designed and built their own motors in-house. He thought that Tesla bought them off-the-shelf from third parties, like _'everyone else'._ He didn't know that Tesla specifies a particular formulation of battery that Panasonic builds for them, using those instructions. He didn't know Tesla has their own battery management software, designed to operate using the battery cell's and battery packs they designed in-house. Etc., etc, etc... *Bob Lutz* knew NONE of that. Hence, why he is so confused about Tesla's popularity, their sales success, or the company valuation. And, why he constantly points to Tesla's _'lack of'_ an ICE business to _'fall back on'_ or to _'drive profitability'._ He quite literally does not understand. He has so many years of _'experience',_ being deeply engrained in a business designed to sell spare parts eternally, to transform their vehicles into _'rolling spare parts conveyances'_ gradually, over the course of several years or decades, that he simply is not equipped to comprehend nor understand the notion of a car company that does the exact opposite. A company built from the ground up to make money on the front end, the initial sale, rather than the continual replacement and sale of spare parts. See, around 40 years ago the *Detroit Big Three* _(Chrysler, Ford, & GM)_ adopted the principle of the _'Loss Leader Vehicle'_ across their entire product lines. That was a mistake. The idea was to sell units, to move iron, to lock consumers into acceptance and reliance upon their their own specific and proprietary ecosystem of spare parts and replacement components. Because an Alternator for a Chevrolet might work on a Pontiac, Buick, or Cadillac, but would never work on a Lincoln, Mercury, Plymouth, or Chrysler. All those parts were designed to wear out, to fail, from the outset. So that you'd go back and buy more. Dealers didn't care, because every Chevrolet Chevette they sold was one less Ford Escort, or Dodge Dart that was sold by the dealership next door, across the street, or across town. And that ALL the revenue for maintenance, repair, or service would come to them, instead of competitors who sold other marques. So a cheap, substandard, pitiful, POS car only needed to SELL, not be profitable at the point of sale, to guarantee constant revenue generation in a lucrative fashion -- for years to come. The market shifted slightly, as Chrysler introduced _'Bumper-to-Bumper Warranties'_ of *Three Years or 36,000 Miles,* but not too much. It just meant you could count on about three years of driving before the cars would cease to operate properly. Yay? Mysteriously stopping/starting, failing outright, exactly as they had been designed to do. Such warranties became ubiquitous in the industry, and gradually increased, to 50,000 then 60,000 to 75,000 miles and now 100,000 mile warranties across numerous brands. At Ford, Quality became _'Job #1'_ supposedly. And really, it was all just marketing. *Lee Iaccocca,* of Chrysler wanted to directly combat the notion that Japanese cars, particularly Honda and Toyota, were _'more reliable'_ or _'better built'_ somehow. He didn't believe it. And he felt that by forcing those companies to adopt the warranty policies he began at Chrysler, he could HURT them financially, by forcing them to prove it. Since then, both Chrysler and GM have gone bankrupt. Honda still thrives. Toyota has had the best-selling car in the U.S. for around 25 years straight. And both have higher valuations on the NYSE than any of the Old Gaurd out of Detroit. Chrysler completely abandoned the fuel efficient Midsize passenger car market years ago, and both GM and Ford followed suit barely two years later. Another contributor to their demise was that in addition to the _'Loss Leader'_ strategy, Detroit automakers also became _'banks'_ offering financing options to buyers. Somehow expecting to make money _'on the backside'_ of transactions via the magic of compound interest and late payment fees. They counted cash owed to them as _'Profit Earned'._ Another _'creative accounting'_ error that has cost them greatly. Especially when they offered _'Factory Cash!'_ at 0% interest.

Actually, the Prius has been getting better and better looking as they have evolved. When they first came out though, they were incredibly ugly. I believe this actually added to their success because they were extremely noticeable and therefor made a clear statement. The people who bought it at that time were trying to make a statement and by buying a Prius they made it very clear that they were buying that car to save the environment. Toyota needed this in order to get people to overcome their fears of buying a car that relies on a lot of new and possibly unreliable technology. The fact that Toyota made a great car is what contributes to it's continued success. Now anyone and everyone who wants to save money on gas is willing to buy a Prius.

It's amazing how far Tesla has come. from Lutz's later comment s about Tesla I think he didn't really believe Tesla would take off. Elon said the model S would be the safest and it and the model X are both 5 Star rated. He said that they would get to 20,000 model S cars and now the make close to 100K Model S and Model X combined. Plus who would have imagined SpaceX reusing rockets 6 years ago.

It tended to be when his hand was taken off a thing did it go to pot. Also Lutz was never CEO of GM so he never sent jobs overseas. It's nothing new. Before North Sea oil, the U.K. produced almost all of their (mostly Hydrogen) gas from coal. The side products included heavy oils, bitumen and coke. Those coke plants used to really stink. Things began to change in the late 1960's, when 'natural gas' arrived.
@Seastallion

Robert Blackford False. Your statement is at best misleading and quite frankly completely disingenuous. It would be more correct to say that the electricity used by Elon's cars CAN be generated by coal. However it could also come from gasoline, diesel, wind turbines, solar panels, nuclear power plants, geothermal power plants, or whatever other method of generating electricity. Even when generated by coal and other so-called fossil fuels, an Electric Car will still ultimately run more cleanly than an internal combustion engine. I'm not even a 'climate change' freak and I can at least admit that much. I don't hate ICE automobiles, but I do think that EVs are generally better, or will be. However, that is just my opinion. I want to see us completely off of foreign energy sources, as to me it is a matter of National Security. So that means EVs.
@michaelnelson3302
@michaelnelson3302 6 жыл бұрын
Agree completely, Robert. What I think REALLY isn't being taken into account by all these good-doers is how all these coal and nuke plants have been taken off line over the last 2 decades while the demand on our pathetic electric grid infrastructure has increased. Now they want to add charging EVERY future car, suv, and truck to that load?? A small part of the northeast recently got hit hard up here by a seemingly innocent cold front/wind storm blowing through and many areas didn't have electricity for a week. People were going out of their precious little minds. Now add to that not being able to charge your vehicles and being STUCK at home with no power. No thanks. And that was a tiny area of maybe a 50 mile radius. Extrapolate that to a major regional or national natural event or even a foreign enemy tinkering with the grid. How's that working for us? Not good! Not to mention, this "success" of Musk's is all on the backs of U.S. taxpayers. Five Billion bucks worth while STILL operating at a financial loss. Yet Tesla is somehow already valued higher than Ford Motor Co, makers of the best selling vehicle in America. That ain't business. That's welfare.

Where Bob Lutz could never see was the moves that was most important, and it had nothing to do with the vehicle itself. Elon was smarter. GM and Bob focused on the car, but never had a single thought of the how to keep it recharged. Elons master stroke was the building of his recharging network nation wide. That was the key.. Even if his cars had marginal range, just as long as their were places readily available to recharge in a timely manner that would be enough to at least minimize the anxiety of buyers purchasing an electric car. GM did nothing of the sort. They put the recharging responsiblily soley i the hands of the vehicle owners. And that makes for a break in common routine similar to that of fueling up ones vehicle. Elon built an infrastructure that worked well. And was all together special to buyers. And ironically made way to somewhat slow down their frantic pace. which may hurt durring urgent moments, but overall makes up for a better driving experience. And in regards to the car, elon took the sort of leaps and bounds few automakers would take. SUre, many had assisted driving, but overally a rather primitive system in comparison to what teslas are doing today. Im talking real A.i. automated driving. But such a thing would utlimately see many accidents in the begginning even deaths. as people would mostly do very foolish things, like thinking the cars going to drive them home. Now it actually can!!! Tesla was willing to be that company to take the first inevitable major hits against them in bringing the technology forward, and they did. now.. theyre in a leaugue of their own. And few can come even close to matching their technology. Its one thing to see two differnet systems tackle the automated drive, but when you dig deep you clearly see one system far far more advanced than the other. GM and cadillac has a decent system, but not on the level of tesla. Bob long years of american automanufacturing had never once saw the sort of speed in technological advancement as tesla was putting out. how could he? he's from an analog era, and elon is purly digital.

History is already evidence to the whole world of how wrong Lutz really was in each and every topic, whether it was Tesla, SpaceX, customer's needs or pseudo economic statements. Musk was even able to respect Lutz for his efforts and knowledge, but Lutz was laughing at Musk. Now, everybody laughts at Lutz! 😂😂😂

This guy is like trump! In here he says Tesla had a high chance of success and today 2017 he's saying that Tesla will be doomed on CNBC
@michaelnelson3302
@michaelnelson3302 6 жыл бұрын
It was 2011. If, after 6 years, your company was STILL losing money on every unit of product you sold, you'd probably say you were doomed, too. But in the world of tax subsidies and the government picking winners and losers, well, the world is your oyster.
@jeremycastro8223
@jeremycastro8223 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Nelson it doesn't loose money on any unit they make profit off of every car they make and it's not couple of thousands inside 10s of thousands so the subsidies wouldn't interfere with their profit. Nice job quoteing Romney with the government pickes the winners and losers line which he was wrong about when he questioned Obama on giving loans to Tesla even though he gave bigger loans to GM, Ford and Chrysler non of which were paid back except for Tesla who paid the loan back ahead of schedule. I don't think the government should get involved with subsidies. I think insted of giving back money they already took from you they just shouldn't take it in the first place but if the government gives all car companies subsidies and gives a lot of companies loans it is hypocritical to only be outraged by just 1.

Do you not realize this interview was several years ago? Lutz gave them a high chance of success BEFORE the company even sold the Model S. Now, for whatever reason he doesn't think Tesla will be successful (which doesn't matter if Lutz is wrong or right), AFTER YEARS of Tesla being an established car manufacturer Lutz believes, for whatever reason, Tesla is gonna fail. You can CHANGE your mind about something when other things in between have happen CHANGE too. It's like if I say I have a good feeling about the weather being beautiful next week but then a couple days later I see dark clouds in the distance, is like you saying, "you said it would be beautiful but now you're saying it's gonna rain!!! You're just like Trump!" You can have an optimistic idea about something, then if that optimism changes because of FACTORS directly related to that change, then great! That is NORMAL! To look up that dark cloud and say It's never gonna rain, when the chances have increased because of that cloud, even when you see and hear lightning and thunder in the distance coming your way, to change your mind and say it's possible it will rain is the SANE thing to do. It may or may not rain, but to say you think or it is possible, is absolutely the natural thing to do! Sure, I can agree with you. Trump says one thing and then another and it all sounds incoherent, but Lutz's opinion, AFTER several YEARS of CHANGES within the business of Tesla, has NOTHING to do with him being similar to Trump. I'm gonna tell you HOW you came up with your illogical statement. There's a little bit of psychology involved. You watched this video knowing Lutz is critical of Tesla. You take offense to that because you love Tesla. After watching this video, somewhere inside you, probably some innate feeling coded in our DNA, you had to go on the defense. "I love Tesla and no one talks to them that way!" You saw an old man disagreeing about something you have no knowledge of (How the Auto Industry works), and thought of him as an old babbling idiot, relating him to another old babbling idiot you don't like... Trump. It's obvious you've surrendered your rational thoughts and intellect for your bias towards Tesla. But I'm sure I'm wasting my time explaining this to you since you couldn't understand when something changes after it was even started, your idea of that something can change too. That's basic reason. Oh and FYI, I suspect you probably don't know, the Cube goes in the square hole.

I think Elon's Tesla company needs to be careful and focus on small cars the size of 4 wheel farm bikes, 1 person with a luggage rack in the back. How many 4 door family cars do you see driving around the city with only one person in it? Do house wives need to do the shopping in a 4 door/seat car? when the kids are at school? Surveys along these lines would be very worthwhile.

well they did sell some for around that at the start but no one seemed interested in the base model so they changed the pricing and specs and keep adjusting even today, its why they did not bother with the 35k model 3, they know the demand for the high spec model 3 is so high ATM they cant even produce enough, so why would you even sell a low priced vision till the high demand drops for the top spec vision.
