Terrific series, Adam. Bob seems like the kind of guy that would speak at length with a stranger at the local donut shop… not at all like the stereotype of a giant corporate executive. Loved this series, not just the best thing you've done to date, but a standout on the automotive themed channels on KZbin, a real winner. Just looking at BL you'd know he was a Captain of industry, a senior politician or a top military guy, he has that aura. His point about learning from what they've done is one that means something to me. My 1st E class estate had hooks in the boot ideal for holding shopping bags, great feature, next one I got deleted those hooks, dealer when I mentioned it said everyone complains, next model there back..clearly not just a GM issue

Great series. Good questions prompted a good discussion. I’d definitely like to hear from other past (not present) leaders in the automotive industry. Maybe also designers, engineers, and even those pesky finance guys. What makes Lutz so interesting is that he was in enough companies to bring a real compare and contrast approach to his memories (and he also doesn’t seem to hold grudges much).

Have watched this entire series, enjoyed it immensely. Lutz is absolutely spot on in his analysis of not allowing an overbalance of intelligence/IQ's into the management of a corporation without having other diversities. I spent my career at one of the Big 3, and saw first-hand the emphasis on developing an encyclopedia of handbooks, desk procedures, and other tools to "quantify" my jobs ..... at the expense of allowing freedom and creativity to flourish on getting actual tasks done. I complained that I needed time to do real things in my workday, and was told emphatically that I had to do both, which wasn't possible to do at a high level, so I did less than optimum work on both goals, just to get it done. Basic financial control is necessary too, but when other sides of the business in the organization are focusing on "procedures", not on product, you get what you get .... like boring interiors and all black cars with no color palates offered and no trim highlights or appeal to the passions of customers. Not to turn this into a political thread, but just making a simple comment .... right now we have too much intelligence in government and it has turned into the very thing Lutz described, endless discussion and argument of narrow ideas/special interests, more studies to top/discredit other studies, while nothing gets done to serve the highest number of people. Learning from history, another topic Lutz touched on, is also spot on. I would go farther than he did on electrification though, because electrics failed in this country once in history, and nothing is truly different in that technology today, the inconveniences will still be there every day that caused people to reject electrics in favor of gas-engined vehicles a hundred years ago, and I believe that will happen again once the fad wears off in a decade. Auto companies need to maintain some balance in their future investment between the two powertrains, or risk a harder landing when people realize they don't want another EV.
@audieconrad8995
@audieconrad8995 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Most companies loose sight of the REAL objectives because (human nature?) work associates get into the "I'm smarter than you" and "I've got something to say" syndrome which eventually turns into the over abundance of rules and regs and people with bullshit "on paper" credentials which as Lutz points out stymies creativity. It ain't just at the Big-3...

Great series! It was enjoyable and enlightening. One of my take aways is that part of the reason Toyota can sit on a hoard of cash is that Japanese investors are more patient; it's not just corporate culture, but national culture that makes a difference. thank you for doing this interview It was very interesting. One thing I have to point out is what 14-year-old in the '90s begged their dad to buy a Camry? Mazda, Mitsubishi, Dodge, Pontiac, and other cars that had more exciting styling and/or powertrains are what most 14-year-olds from my experience want their dads to buy. I think the mindset of trying to make Chevy More exciting is what undercut the mid-level divisions which left us with one boring division that can't decide what it's supposed to be. The lumina was an appliance much like the Camry, the problem was the Camry was first class in reliability and the lumina was not and everyone knew it. The Camry outsold it and Toyota actually made money on it because they didn't have to discount it because people wanted to reliable car even if it was an appliance. The problem that GM needed to fix was the reliability and they still haven't fixed it regardless of what various reports claim. Look up the extensive problems with the GM 3.6 and the ecotec engines then compare them to the Toyota 4 cylinders and v6s.

@@judethaddaeus9742 maybe you think successful, but what I saw was another bankruptcy and two or three times being overtaken by outside corporations after AMC came into the picture. And now after all that, Chrysler still has platforms that have gotten stale and their sales slump .... so whatever those two people you cited may have done in merging companies didn't translate to others in the organization after them. Not attacking what you say, I'm just reiterating that the company is living off of Jeep (and Ram pickups), not anything else from AMC. @@rayrussell6258 Chrysler was the most profitable volume car company per unit in the world in 1998, before the Daimler takeover. That is a fact, not an opinion. Whatever you may think of what happened after Daimler took over is immaterial to that fact. If you can’t look at Chrysler’s impressive performance in the ‘90s without seeing their *only* bankruptcy in 2009 or foreign ownership by Daimler and then Stellantis, maybe work on the way you evaluate history. Daimler spent $35 billion on Chrysler in 1998. Not exactly chump change. Because Chrysler was profitable and at the top of their game. Chrysler was sitting on a massive cash reserve pile at the time and didn’t need rescuing. Then Daimler sucked the money out, Chrysler’s leadership headed for the exits, Daimler stripped the company apart and chucked everything about the way the company previously operated, only for quality to collapse and sales to tank… until they sold Chrysler to Cerberus in 2007 for $7 billion. And if you don’t know who Joe Cappy and François Castaing are, I don’t think you have much basis to comment on what AMC was, what they brought to Chrysler, and what Chrysler lost after the Daimler takeover.

When I was in Lansing Oldsmobile engineering, everyone loved cars. When I was transferred to the Warren Tech Center, there were engineers who didn't even like cars. Don't get me wrong, there were some old timers in Detroit who really loved cars. But all the new hires were just engineers by virtue of education, not car lovers.

Bob is a legend. He has influenced so many different car companies over the years it’s just amazing. And if he wants to smoke a cigar during an interview, nobody is going to tell him what to do 😀 I watched these in a row, fascinating career, I hope he comes back, he’s only 90 and sharp as a knife 👍👍👍

That was brilliant. Thank you so much fir this series. And please take Bob’s suggestion to go back and expound in his experiences with individual models over the years. Maybe get his take on current trends that either maybe dead ends, and possible directions that could reignite the passion of young people for the industry. I really enjoyed this talk. Bob’s take on the need for aspirational models at all levels (mind of a 14 year old) was well taken.

David E Davis I believe made the original comment that Lutz references, while being Editor of "Car and Driver" magazine. Must agree with the comment, too ..... not sure there are very many in this country today who would search for Luminas to buy.

Thanks Adam, t found this interview fascinating. A lot of what Bob says makes complete sense not just from am automotive manufacturing perspective. I would love to see another interview where Bob talks about his favourite and least favourite cars and gives us some of the back-story into these cars. Take care and keep up the good work.

This is the most relaxed and informative interview of the many I have seen with Bob Lutz. Two true car guys; and by car guy, I mean people who understand different people look for different things in a car. They are no less passionate than the motor sports fanatics, so it’s important to judge a carb based on the wants and needs of the people who buy it. You and Bob understand this.

Bob's comments are spot on. My 2019 Silverado has the same instrument cluster as my Camaro. Now most people wouldn't pick up on that but being a car guy I do. It has good badging but I put stainless steel letters on tailgate or you wouldn't notice the Chevrolet except maybe at 10 feet. The gold bowtie in grill is huge and it was gold. I painted it same color as truck which happens to be a bronze color so it really blends in with grill well. If it was a red truck I probably would not have done it. However, an electric Silverado that costs 100 grand! I don't think so. The biggest issue I see with Silverados are terrible engine choices. The diesel gets 15 mpg. That's horrible for a diesel. The turbo 4 gets 17 mpg and you can't get it except in low priced models and it probably requires 91 octane. There is no V6! The small V8 gets 15 mpg. My 6.2 liter V8 gets 17.7 mpg, or at least that's what the display says. It must be the 10 speed automatic transmission. I can't complain about gas mileage because it is a great engine. Smooth and vast amounts of power. What I don't like is having to use 93 octane. I was going to trade it on a 2022 Canyon ATV4 which gets 17mpg and it uses regular gas. Just try and find one! My dad always bought GM because he said they look the best and you get more with a GM. GM owned the market through the 1980's. The terrible 90's styling really hurt GM and it never recovered. The Oldsmobiles were so ugly and Pontiacs were a close second.
