It was the Native Americans that gave these soldiers the nickname "Buffalo Soldiers", because when they first ran into them their hair reminded them of the buffalo.

Some of the Buffalo Soldiers "went native" after they finished their tour of duty, stayed in Indian country and married into the various tribes. I know a Dakota family that descends from a Buffalo soldier.

I used to know a delightful old Jamaican lady who used to tell me what life was like back when she grew up there. Because very few people on the island could afford a record player, the record companies would drive a truck onto the beach and play the latest Reggae music through speakers and there would be impromptu parties. There was a slightly sinister side to this as the local musicians would be paid a very small amount of money and would sign away the rights to their music. Marley sang about this in his song "Small Axe" (Small Acts - a lot of Marley's lyrics were coded). In the song the "Small Axe" was going to chop down "The Big Tree" (Big Three record companies).

Reggae the only music that the bpm is the same as the human heart beat Between 80 - 110 beats per minute. This is why you feel reggae not just hear it.
@garywilson30423 жыл бұрын
That's a great metaphor, but simply not true. A lot of reggae hasa low tempo and high tempo, but so does many, many other pieces and genres of music.
@gtsehafe81682 жыл бұрын
@@garywilson3042 reggae is the only music in the world that's based on the heartbeat. There is no other music on the planet like it
@billhicks64492 жыл бұрын
@@gtsehafe8168 that's just not true. While reggae has certainly earned a place amongst the most endearing and heartfelt of music's it certainly is not the only music based on the beat of the human heart. Blues, Jungle Techno, and Nu metal are just a couple of examples of genres based on an off set beat. In fact there really is only two basic types of drum beat. Straight "tap,tap,tap,tap" and the heartbeat "TAP,tap,TAP,tap. As for BPM, the manipulations of drum beats do more for the feel of a song than anything else. A drum beat above the average heartbeat (which is actually 60 BPM, and for healthy individuals may drop as low as 45 BPM) should indicate the song is about a situation in which the heart would be racing faster than usual.
@billhicks64492 жыл бұрын
A heart beat of 80+ BPM is a major indicator of heart disease. Your heart should not have a resting beat of more than 1 beat per second. If it's at 110 resting you are on the verge of a heart attack.

I'm a white Brit and I grew up in my teens listening to every album of his. There will never be a guy to compare to Bob, he's just the best Reggae singer ever. The man's a legend. I used to go to Jamaican Blues parties where I grew up and all we did was listen to Bob and Old school Ska and Reggae. Pretty much every Black person where I lived in the Uk had jamaican ancestry. Btw Bob's Dad was a White British Naval officer, so he's mixed race also. I still have his Biography sat on my bookshelf.

Love this song, love Marley. The Buffalo Soldiers were Civil War Soldiers, fighting for the Union, in the Civil War. After that, the US sent them out West to fight against the Native Americans, again, for America. I think Marley quipped the phrase to "represent" a resistance movement, but the term is much older.

It was because they Indigenous warriors thought the hair of the Black Soldier resembled the furry manes of the buffalo. I do belive the first Buffalo soldiers were the men of the 3rd Cavalry and the 1st Infantry divisions. A point of history; in all the wars since the Indian Wars of the 19th century, these regiments have never lost a single battle. Not one.

It's sad his music is affiliated with smoking herb but at that time that was his religion. Very rarely do we hear a Bob song on the radio. There's a reason for it. His song "War" was a poem. Huge Respect for Bob Marley and his effort to spread a message of unity and cooperation and hope. However, he got this topic completely wrong. Our tribes often welcomed freed and escaped slaves into tribal citizenship. Many of our ancestors fought for their freedom. Check the formation of the Western Cherokee Nation (the one sending a representative to congress this year). Their charter specifically includes any and all freedmen living in the area to be registered as tribal members. Imagine our horror when those same people came at us dressed in US Cavalry uniforms and participated in Indian extermination efforts and driving tribes off their homelands and into reservations (otherwise known as extermination camps). For Bob Marley to re-cast this as a fight of resistance, as a movement is fundamentally distorting the reality of the wholesale slaughter. However, Respect to you for examining and reacting to this song and all music. Respect to all minorities trying to have their voices heard. It's a difficult song for some of us to listen to. Peace.
