Hodder & Stoughton and James Bowen are saddened to announce the death of Bob the cat on 15 June at the age of at least 14 years. James, a recovering addict, first met Bob in 2007 when he found him abandoned and injured. James took care of Bob who in turn gave him a reason to get up each morning. They quickly became inseparable, busking and selling The Big Issue on the streets of London. In 2012 Hodder & Stoughton published James’ first book, A Street Cat Named Bob, telling his and Bob’s extraordinary story. The book was a publishing sensation, selling - along with its sequels The World According to Bob, A Gift from Bob and The Little Book of Bob - more than eight million books in more than forty languages, and was made into the film in 2016 starring Luke Treadaway as James. Bob appeared in the film as himself and will appear in a sequel, A Gift from Bob, later this year. As James and Bob continued to find fans all over the world, Bob led an incredible life meeting well-wishers at book signings, travelling the world and coping with feline fame. He was an extraordinary cat who will be greatly missed. James Bowen says “Bob saved my life. It’s as simple as that. He gave me so much more than companionship. With him at my side, I found a direction and purpose that I’d been missing. The success we achieved together through our books and films was miraculous. Bob is such a smart little chap and he loves you lots. Hope your story and Bob's inspires people to adopt abandoned/rescue kitties, as they have so much love to give. JAMES - I just happened to find you & Bob’s movie by accident about 2 years ago and really identified with it. I’m an ex-addict who was on methadone for 29 years and I finally detoxed myself. That took about 2 years and I’ve been sober for 17 months now. I’m a sensitive/empath and asked my boyfriend st the time why we got into the drugs in the first place; his response was “maybe we felt so much, we didn’t want to feel anything “. I can agree with that. I think Bob was someone for you to care for which in turn helped you to care about yourself. I’ve been around and through everything shown in your movie. I cried through most of it as it touched me on many levels. I’m a huge cat person myself and was devastated to learn Bob passed on when I came upon a video of you and a statue dedicated to Bob. May you still be as happy as you were in this video and May you find another cat looking for the love you have to give. I know how hard your life has been and losing people you knew AND Bob, your best friend. Best wishes and a very belated condolences to you. God bless.

Loved your book, James. Very well done and engaging from first page to last. My deepest condolences on the loss of your sweet dear friend. Bob was one in a zillion. Wish I had been able to see you two when I was in London in 2007. I had a ginger cat once as well. He was the King of the neighborhood and everyone adored him. He was also a young adult stray who, when I found him, allowed me to pick him up, put him my car (he sat on the back of my seat as if he owned the vehicle) and home to a long life with me. Loved him to bits. My neighbors have a ginger they adopted as a kitten. He is a senior now and I, luckily, get to babysit him when needed. My dear nephew. Now I will always have a huge soft spot for a ginger kitty. They are so special. Stay well, sir, and take care. Thank you for bringing Bob into our lives. Best wishes always from the Pacific NW.

I just wanted to let you know that I'm so heartbroken for you. I love all animals but have a special fondness for cats. I have 3 kitties myself and love them so much.I saw the movie of your story with Bob recently and I was in awe of Bob. After watching the movie, I went on You Tube to find out more about you and Bob. That cat had to be heaven sent to take care of you, he was so smart. Every interview you did, he sat next to you as if he was protecting you. I know how painful it is to lose a pet that you love and that loved you in return. So many people all over the world were touched by you and Bob's story and I'm sure many have sent you words of encouragement after your loss. I pray Bob continues to watch over you at this time in your life. ..I read somewhere that Bob didn't suffer and this was comforting for me and I hope it helped you a little. There was a Scene in their Biographical movie where they didn’t have any food to eat and Bob was getting restless due to hunger. I couldn’t watch that scene with my eyes opened because tears were falling through my eyes. Love your Friendship

I found Bob on my recommended earlier this year. When he passed I was so worried about James, I know from experience that a loss such as with Bob can set one back and I seriously hoped James would keep his sobriety. Pets are furry family, without my cat Indie I'd be lost. I heard James adopted 2 new kittens and kept his sobriety, that makes me so happy! Bob is looking across the rainbow bridge cheering you on James.

We just loved your book, dittos for Bob, quite an amazing young fellow. Not too long ago we adopted a tiny little orange Persian rescue kitten, who was found almost dead in a field outside our town. He's got the beginnings of kidney disease (we think he was partially run over) but has a great spirit and just loves us completely. We'll take care of him so long as we can; he just adds so much to our home. Thanks for your inspiring story, one that we shared with our granddaughter, who loves cats also. We hope that you and Bob still have many great years together. BTW, your guitar playing is spot on also, keep up the good work!

Bob sure loves his dad. Occasionally there is a human in cat skin. Bob is one. I had one once, his intelligence was astonishing. I still mis him. I have other cats, but only one was my “heart” cat.

Bob is just like my Barney who was a feral rescue kitten. I tamed him in 3 weeks. He would never wear a scarf or bell though. He saved me because I suffer from serious mental illness. Take care.
