@@MrZobiwanMy Bob Ross epiphany was that the quality of his art isn't that he had meticulous brushwork (he didn't) or that his paintings had deep meaning or allegory (they don't). Ross's art was PERFORMANCE ART. The emotions and thoughts his paintings evoke aren't due to their content, but the way we saw them created.

This was really cool! Thanks to KZbin and whoever runs this channel! I LOVE watching Bob Ross paint. He encourages the audience to paint along. But I'm not sure how that's possible in real time when people had to tune into the broadcast version, read the colors he used, etc. I think he probably encouraged people to "paint along with him" as a way of putting the ideas and inspiration into regular people's minds.and hopefully encouraged to try painting by watching his show. I'm not sure if it's on this channel, but there is a YT video with the whole story about Bob Ross and how he finally ended up doing this show for PBS. But if you're a softy like me, you'll end up crying at the end when he unfortunately dies of lymphoma at 52. I still recommend it! Have Kleenex handy, though ;) I have no artistic talent. But these videos do make want to try with his instructions, demonstrations, and techniques. When I win the Lotto, have the room for an easel, money to buy paint, brushes, and several canvases since I guarantee I'd screw several up before painting something I'd want to hang up on the wall. I'll keep watching Bob for now! I really love these videos!

Bob had a friend who tried to teach him portrait painting. After a year or two the friend had to tell him the truth -- that nature was where Bob's heart was, and so he should go back to painting bushes and trees. Bob Ross was not a great artist. I think that makes me love him even more. He kept looking and trying until he found something that worked for him. And then, because it made him so happy, he decided to share it with as many people as he possibly could, in order to bring more joy into the world.

I dont speak for all, but it is pretty easy. The way he paints is all mechanic based, so as long as you are doing it correctly, little skill is actually required. I would love to see what Bob could create given unlimited time to work on a painting. Obviously he can bust out absolutely beautiful landscapes in his half hour time frame, but his buildings and man made structures always seem to suffer a little bit as they're much more difficult and detailed to paint. I think it would be really neat to see what would happen without a time constraint.

I love his paintings but there are a couple things he did that never seemed as impressive as the rest of his work. For instance, he never properly portrays the correct distances in the reflections or reflects the proper colours. It should be a mirror image of directly what's above it. It would be really easy to add a bit of colour in proper sequence then pull it down to get a very convincing reflection where you see the whole building and wheel for instance. I feel as though even in paintings where the reflection is not covered by mist and bubbles he still neglected to do this. I also don't find his cabins or wood surface effects very convincing either. They look very muddled and plastery, like houses made of melting chocolate rather than old wood. He also does them too quickly and they end up looking very asymmetrical and sloppy and don't fit in with the hyper-realistic mountains, landscapes, and foliage around it. I find more often than not his buildings end up marring rather than complimenting his painting. I get that this program was meant for speed painting considering he would get these beautiful paintings done in 30 minutes or less and that the practice painting he did prior had better detail, especially on the cabins, it just always bugged me since he makes other incredibly realistic effects in contrast. Wish he would have made special videos where he would dedicate time to painting specific things in great detail for teaching purposes, like show us how he does his fully detailed cabins like in the pre-paintings rather than only do a single full painting condensed into a 30 minute segment going over a slew of techniques. I guess now he'll never get the chance. RIP Bob Ross.

Van Gogh is going a bit too far. Compare one of Bob's paintings to Starry Night. I like Bob, but his style is very different from that. In fact, Bob's work is a look that we used to call "motel room art".

+Dane Taylor +Martin Riggs actually Bob was very sneaky he always had a copy of the painting behind the camera, none of these were done on the spot except for season 2 when we assume he's looking at the producer he's actually looking at the painting. He specifically asked these never be shown to the public because under time constraints he couldn't add everything in to the live painting that was in the original. :) actually I'm pretty sure the producers were never really in the room for filming because it's a small room only the size of a small bedroom the only things in it were the easel, the camera, a clock, his black backdrop and the original painting

I used to be like "omg that thing looks like a dog house!" haha but then somewhere along the line, my heart warmed to them. They look old and rustic and lived in. It's one of those, "If those walls could talk, imagine the stories they'd tell." And so when you think of his buildings with that sort of narrative behind them, you can more easily warm up to them. And now? I love those old dilapidated things! lol
