Chevrolet came to Bob Seger and requested to let them do his song for a truck commercial. He initially turned them down until he heard their full campaign. He reluctantly agreed. This was in the 90s, about 10 years after the song was released. Old Time Rock & Roll, Night Moves, Against the Wind, Turn the Page, Main Street, etc., are some of his other songs. He's in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, as well as Song Writer's Hall of Fame.

Bob is a Detroit man and the automobile manufactures were all near or at bankruptcy and that meant 1,000's of jobs would be lost. That is why he agreed.

I think it's Seger tapping into a personal experience he had when he was younger with his musical dreams, and he was young when he started, but leaving it open lyrically for the listener to relate to it, which is why Bob is considered one of the greatest lyricist ever.

I just turned 40 a few months ago. My parents raised me on Bob Seger. I was able to take them to see him live for the first time about 8 years ago. It was amazing. I think of sitting in the back seat of my grandma's car when I was about 7 when this comes on, lol.

Blue Collar Rock... when I was 18, I was 196 lbs @ 8% body fat. I played football, hockey and was involved in karate & judo and a long distance runner. I could carry and run with two 250 lb linemen on my shoulders, for 20 yards in 25 seconds. About 50 years later, I'm still in decent shape, but, I'm closer to Bruce Springsteen's "Glory Days".

I'm 59 in a couple weeks it feels like only a couple years ago that i graduated high school but it's been 40 years let alone have a child 35 years old and being retired after 40 years of working. It ain't no lie when they say the older you get the faster time goes by.. Enjoy life while you are young because you will be old before you know it.

I think what he's saying with the "I still believed in my dreams" line, is that people around him were probably telling him that his dreams were unapproachable and that he should focus on something more achievable, but he wasn't going to stop believing in them just because they didn't believe in them. Which is a common thing amongst musicians, right? How many times have you heard a story about a young person who has dreams of becoming a music star and people try to talk them out of it because they don't believe it's an achievable dream? That could be a experience Seger had when he was young. I think this song is him, not being in a mid-life crisis, but him reflecting on the fact that he didn't listen to the outside noise and still followed his own path and eventually achieved those goals he set for himself at 18. I don't think he's saying his life is over, I just think it's him reflecting on himself accomplishing one set of dreams and now he's currently working towards new dreams, which is a normal part of life. When you accomplish your dreams that you set for yourself when you were younger, you don't give up and say you're done, you create new ones and work on accomplishing those ones. At least that's how I've always looked at this song.
