This was new back when I was 26 years old. Now I'm 64. "40 years now, where'd they go? / 40 years ... I don't know. / I sit and I wonder sometimes / where they've gone." Indeed. Still one of my all-time favorite guitar solos.
@scottromer858414 күн бұрын
I'm 61, I hear you. 18 he was like a rock, strong, clear eyed with steps quick and light. 20 years later, he sees himself again like a rock. In it's simplest terms, in different ways, now he's carrying the weight (providing for his family) instead of carefree and young. This song strikes a cord in so many. Played hockey for 20 years, summer jobs cutting house lots and firewood throwing four foot logs into trucks being young and strong. 40+ years later, had 8 surgeries fixing knees, shoulders, etc. I definitely sit and wonder, where they've gone : ) One of my favorite guitar solos as well.

@ It makes me laugh whenever the option to have a back rub or … (you know) comes up, I will go with the former more often than the latter! Not for lack of interest, mind you. Just practicality. ☺️ Thanks for writing. It’s good to talk to someone in the same boat, even if it is a Titanic lifeboat. “I’ll never let go, Jack…” (30 seconds later) “STOP CROWDING ME, JACK!” (Lets go)

I can only speak for myself, but I feel this is a song that you truly appreciate all the more when you're older and looking back on your life. I'm 44 years old now and the lyrics resonate with me because it describes me as a young man of only 18 or, rather, me as a young boy who thought he already knew everything about being a man.

@Calamity_Jack9 күн бұрын
I get ya Biss about this being a song about getting nostalgic about when you were younger. But as an older guy... I gotta say it packs more of a punch to me now than it did then. Maybe it's an age thing, maybe it's just a guy thing, but if you've ever heard the phrase, "you don't know what you've got until it's gone" (and yeah, I know it's also in the "Hard Habit to Break" song lyrics), it's really true. You take a lot for granted and over the years many those things slip away until one day you realize, "Wow - it''s been 20 years now and look at me now." It doesn't have to always be *bad*, but it's usually a bittersweet-type moment. And for Bob, I suspect his memory of feeling so physically and mentally strong, even unbreakable and invincible, that eventually gave way to feeling "mortal" was jarring and a bit sad. Of course, in his case, he also became a hugely famous and wealthy singer/songwriter, so there's that consolation prize!

Yay! I'm so happy you've gotten to some more Bob! He actually has quite a few songs that are reminiscent and looking back on his youth, like "Night Moves", "Main Street", actually a lot of them when I think about it. I guess you could say it's kind of a theme with him. This song was used in an advertising campaign for Chevy Trucks in the US, for like a decade in the late 80s/90s, so if you were around back then, even if you'd never heard the whole song before, you'd know it from commercials. You should do "Turn The Page" next, but if you want something more upbeat, maybe "Hollywood Nights"! Oh! Also, just so you know, The Silver Bullet band is just the name of Bob's band. It's not like a separate entity that's collaborating with him. That's kind of an oldschool rock n roll thing, like from the 50s and early to mid 60s. Bob Seger is from Detroit, I think had been around Motown, and started out in the early 60s, even though he didn't really become more popular until the 70s, but one of his most famous songs is "Old Time Rock N Roll", and he really did come out of an older era and tradition of Rock, that he was sometimes nostalgic and sentimental about. That used to be a pretty common thing for naming bands. It would be the name of the lead person, and then the group name. Like So and so, and the whatevers. Buddy Holly and The Crickets! That kind of thing. I guess that started to change alongside the culture in the late 60s. Like, there's a famous story where The Doors were announced on stage as Jim Morrison and The Doors, but Jim didn't like that. He didn't want to be thought of as separate from the group. We are all equal parts of the same one. It's just "The Doors", and he made the announcer go back on stage and do it again right before they'd come on. Although, ironically, in this case, "Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band", is more inclusive, and acknowledging of the band then just "Bob Seger". So, I guess it just depends.

Two things. Love Bob Seger...he's got an amazing voice. And, like others have already mentioned, there are plenty of other songs to add to the never-ending list of songs to react to. But, I'll go in a slightly different direction and offer up another artist to add to...well...the never-ending list of artists to react to. Depending on the period, he goes (or went) by: John Cougar, John Cougar Mellencamp, or John Mellencamp. A lot of interesting "story songs". Like Bob Seger, John came out of the American Midwest. So, there are a lot of stories to be told.

I wasn't in that great a shape at age 18, and I had a lot of stuff from my childhood I had to work through. But by my mid-20s I was in a much better place mentally, I'd started college and I worked whatever jobs I could get. At one point, I worked a couple of years in the warehouse and loading-dock of a furniture store, and did deliveries and setups throughout the Denver area. I was so lean and so strong, I had no money but simple goals, and no problems outside of what I needed to do next. The older I get, the more difficult it is to hear some of Bob Seger's songs. They're never anything other than great, though.

Check out Seger's "Her Strut". It's an upbeat tempo, and though it's seems like a male gaze song, as a woman in the manufacturing IT, I found it a great song of strength. Dress in a power suit with heels and red lipstick and go confidently into a meeting with management and get them to listen! BTW - That's an old, old pic of Seger as my avatar. I swear he grew the beard just to cover up how pretty he was.

Hi Bisscute: Bob Seger song is a older person' song, and it invokes memories. In particular, it can be a quiet moment of reflection that a person does to remember the good carefree times of youth. However, every person, man or woman, grows and becomes wiser over time, and realizes their full potential as a human being. Specifically a person also becomes stronger as well through the building of beliefs and values that are defined through personal experiences whether good or bad. So you are much stronger now Bisscute than you were in your youth, and that is being unwavering like a rock. Oh, great reaction as always, and if you want to shake off the blahs of your mood you can choose to cut loose with a Billy Idol song called, " Mony, Mony."
