Bob shooting the current production of a classic African rifle for soft-skinned dangerous game: the venerable Winchester Model 70 in .375 H&H magnum. This video was actually made in 2019 but never posted because I had included another "bad, bad, evil" gun in the video -- which was lost in a boating accident. He, he...

I own the same M70 Safari in 375H&H and the recoil is as he described, about like a 12ga. I’ve shot 300Win rifles that felt harder on the shoulder; it all depends on stock design and rifle weight. I’m not saying that it feels like a 243, but it’s not that stiff when you consider what’s happening down range, lol! My only complaint is that my eyes have a hard time focusing with the stock sights, I’m going upgrade to something that my eyes will be able to see better. I must admit that I too use the PPU ammo for fun shooting at the range but I’d be carrying Federal, Hornady, or some other similar quality ammunition if I were around any dangerous game. When you put your life on the line, ammo cost shouldn’t be part of the equation! Great video, thanks for sharing!

Beautiful rifle. You're definitely right to keep the sights for this rifle and cartridge. I had a friend that had one of these it was a pre-64 model 70 375 H&H when I lived in Alaska he used it for moose which you could easily take a moose with a 3006 but he liked the 375 just in case he came across the grizzly or something and he needed a little more punch. I think you handle the recoil well because you correctly allow the rifle to push you back A lot of people think that they're supposed to stand into the recoil and resist the recoil which is incorrect. If you allow the gun to push you back a little bit it's a lot easier to accept the recoil. But I think you know this because obviously in the video you had no issue excepting the recoil I could tell by your form and technique. Thank you Hope you're healthy and doing well 👍

Yes. The felt recoil is a lot less if you are standing rather than seated at a bench and leaning toward the target. Standing allows your shoulder to give in a little, thereby lessen the recoil. Thanks for watching and commenting!

This, I'm a 5ft11" 145lbs skeleton and I have no issue ( besides ammo cost 😂) shooting my 375 brno zkk 602 all day long, all tiu have to do is letting the recoil go through you and not stonewalling it.

@@levergatRapha I was talking about when I was young and dumb and didn't know any better. Now I know how to handle recoil but I will say I've shot a 375 H&H and it doesn't recoil anywhere close to a 300 weather be mag. The 300 weather be mag it's so much harder and faster. Personally even though I know how to handle recoil now I still really don't see any need for anything bigger than a 3006 unless you're going to Africa and you're trying to meet their legal standards for a 375 caliber. Thank you

I have always been a fan of big bore rifles currently have 2 .375 cal rifles. The most interesting is a Ruger Hawkeye .375 Ruger w/24" bbl. BUT, when I bought this "safari" grade rifle, Ruger was making an exact copy of this rifle in .223. With this "baby" rifle you can do alot of less expensive shooting and get all the feel w/o the recoil. My .223 weighs in at 9.5 lbs and it's a tac driver. The .375 is also very accurate, both are well done, handsome rifles. Have had two Win Hester Model 70s in .375, both appeared to have open sights as an after thought....check pie e was too high and could line up with the open sights. Sold both of them, my .375 H&H is a custom build on a Weatherby Mk V action....a shooter as well. Built by Master Gunsmith J.T.Lewis, Butte MT.

Wonderful rifles there. I own the same rifle in 416 Remington magnum. 20 round sessions on the bench for load development get pretty spicy on the shoulder lol. Extremely accurate though for a big bore rifle. I have scope on mine because I only use it deer hunting.

The brass has the small shoulder set back as well as the chamber throat is longer than the seated pri bullet, woud be my guess as to why they fired on 2nd and 3rd tries - not bad primers.
@rmwtsou
@rmwtsou 11 ай бұрын
I don't buy that. If the gun is .357H&H mag and the cartridge is the same, there is no excuse for the cartridge not firing on the first try. Besides, this is a supposedly a dangerous game cartridge.

Hi Nick. You are absolutely right about quality. Making them in Portugal turned in my opinion even better quality finished, they are made under quality patterns of Browning Fire arms in Viana factory. I have ordered a model 70 here in Portugal(were I live) and they stop producing all 70 Models unfortunately... I understand the enormous cost of manufacturingf this type of bolt action production but ther's always market for this hi quality rifles. I hope they listen us and return to this icon!!

The barreled actions I believe are made in Columbia SC,and then shipped to Portugal for final assembly where stocks are made using American walnut and shipped back here,so must be marked made in Portugal...Go figure.Anyway I have a Kimber Caprivi in .375 and mounted a Leupold scope with quick detach rings to take advantage of the flat shooting .375 with spitzer bullets fo long range and can easily remove scope for express sight use. By the way,if you get a bad primer like that it may be a hangfire and you should wait at least 30 seconds with the rifle pointed in a safe direction.If the primer should detonate as you open the action it would be a disaster.Anyway nice rifle and vid.
