Before even introducing himself to Bob Stoops, Baker Mayfield was making a name for himself at OU - in intramurals.
On this episode of “Conversations with Coach,” Mayfield joins his former Sooner coach to talk about their first meeting after his transfer as a walkon, Mayfield’s domination of OU intramural softball and flag football and the moment he joined the Sooner football program.
The rest, of course, is Sooner history. Mayfield went on to win the 2017 Heisman Trophy, become the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, and - more relevant this week - win two out of three meetings with Texas.
Other topics Stoops and Mayfield cover:
*Mayfield’s experience growing up a Sooner fan in Austin.
*Going through four head coaches and four offensive coordinators in Cleveland.
*The LA story Mayfield wrote late last season.
*Why being Tampa Bay’s starting quarterback is like being back at OU again.

My niece, Dera, had the worst case of Spina Bifida in the history of Texas Children's Hospitals (Dallas). She survived. In 2017, at the age of 30, she had to have both legs amputated for curvature of the spine. OU quarterback Baker Mayfield not only signed a ball for Dera (a fanatic OU fan) but also made a personal effort to encourage a young woman who would never see her legs again. Baker Mayfield will always be number one in my book.

My grandson went to one of Baker’s football camps in Austin. He is the real deal. His sincerity is endearing and his confidence is contagious. He was every bit as enthusiastic with a bunch of 11-12 year olds as he is during a game. He was great with all the kids. Very patient and engaged the whole session. My grandson set next to him at lunch and got to catch a TD pass from Baker and it’s something he will never forget. Thanks Bake!

I’m confident the family of Paul Scott Howell doesn’t feel the same about Baker Mayfield, because Baker Mayfield glorifies and honors the violent gang banging convicted felon who shot Paul Scott Howell in the head at point blank range in front of his then 7- and 9-year-old daughters and sister. Baker Mayfield wore the convicted killer’s name, Julius Jones, on his helmet and shoes during games for an entire season. But that’s not the only act thatCommitted by Julius Jones that Baker Mayfield honors, because Julius Jones didn’t stop at just executing Howell in front of his two little girls and sister after taking them to Braum’s to get ice cream. When Paul Scott HOWELL’s lifeless body fell to the ground, his two little girls and sister ran for their lives as Julius Jones shot at them, attempting to also murder them. Yeah, Baker Mayfield is the “real deal” alright. Such a sincere and enduring person he is….that is, unless your father and brother was brutally executed right before your very eyes, and then you had to dodge as your father’s killer tried to gun you down, trying to shoot you in the back. Pretty sure Baker Mayfield could care less about being enthusiastic with those two kids. You say your grandson got to catch a pass from Baker Mayfield, which is something you say he will never forget. I’m sure Paul Scott Howell’s two little girls and sister also have memories of Baker Mayfield that they too will never forget. Oh well huh? Glad you grandson got to catch a pass from someone like him. I wonder if you’d feel the same if your son was murdered in front of you and your grandson, and Baker Mayfield honored your the killer?

Baker was my Mom's favorite Sooner of all time. She died two years ago at age 77, but followed his career after OU passionately, even joining Cleveland Browns message boards to argue with the online haters. She'd be thrilled with how Tampa Bay is doing, even though she knows I'm a Saints fan. What Bob and Bake put together was really, really special.

Man I’ve wanted Baker to have a fair shot at the NFL since he got drafted. I’m so happy the bucs gave that man a chance. All I’m saying is OU gave him a chance and he balled tf out to prove that he deserved the chance. I’d bet money that he plays his mf heart out in Tampa for the same reason. Much love my friend.

I'm still convinced as a kid Baker and myself played catch before the 2005 TCU game in the parking lot of the old dorms. Me and my brother and dad were playing and this kid about a year younger than and his dad who looked alot like Baker's dad came by his kid asked if he could join and we ran routes back and forth to each other for like 30 minutes he also said he was from Austin which shocked me as a kid cuz I figured everyone in Austin would be a Texas fan. Kid was wearing an old 22 Quentin Griffin jersey 😂 I'll go to my grave swearing that was a young Baker 😂

That’s pretty cool. Know what else is cool…I was in a bathroom stall in a bar in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and I swear Matthew McConaughey was in the stall next to me. It was all quiet and weird cuz I didn’t wanna make a loud fart sound during my initial push, and I hear the words…”don’t be shy” followed by a McConaughey giggle. He has a very distinct voice, and I swear it was him. Anybody else saying that would be weird as hell, but from Matt…it felt like he was motivating me to give my best effort while crapping, and any noises my butthole made would not offend him. It made me comfortable. I didn’t even think about it being him real time, but as soon as he left…it hit me. Then I finished pooping. I’d love to reach out to him and ask him if it was him, but it was probably more memorable to me than him. If it wasn’t him…well, I’d probably get arrested. True story.

Finally !!! Seems the way the NFL drafts players is borderline criminal !! The best players go to the sorriest teams !! Teams even lose intently to get the highest picks ?? I often wonder How many generational players have got hurt playing for shitty teams and never lived up to their potential !! Listen teams in the NFL suck for a reason !! Bad coaching, Poor development of players and Rediculous owners that made millions doing one thing unrelated to football, Yet make final decisions on players !!

This guy played a whole season injured, which everyone seems to forget for some reason. His come back win with the Rams was unreal. And I love watching what Baker is doing in Tampa. Baker has so much heart and soul when plays the game. Love it! One word to describe Baker.. Amazing!!!

Try a lot more talent.. and nobody has ever played with more heart? Really? Have seen guys play on broken legs, torn ACLs, dislocated shoulders popped back in.. what has he done to trump that? How about the guys like Jim Brown who broke the color line? Ronnie Lott opting to have a finger cut off. YA Title who basically had his head split open. Meanwhile now it's illegal to get grass on the QBs jersey lol what a ridiculous statement, that's frankly just disrespectful to the warriors of this game.

Man I remember the game where Mark caught the pass late to seal the game for OU. I brought my fiance, son, mom, and dad to the Texas state fair. It was my 30th birthday too. I hoped I could find some tickets cheap enough to go in the stadium. But I just couldn't afford it. So we watched the game in a little wine garden at the fair just outside the stadium. And it was HOT that day.

The first I heard was baker was running the scout team and lighting it up in a major way. We already had a starting qb but I heard Dean Blevins say the starter "will have trouble holding him off in the Spring." Meaning Baker would take the job from the starter. Then I got online and watched footage from Tech. I really was amazed that Tech let him get away and I instantly became a believer. And I still am. I saw every home game he played at OU in person. I don't need some media yahoo tell me how good he is. I KNOW how good he is.
